Aeroflot IL96-300

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm currently working on Eastern Express' 1/144 IL96-300, can't say that I'd recommend the kit to anyone who doesn't enjoy a lot of filling, sanding etc. The fit is questionable at best, detail on the gear is lacking to poor, flash everywhere, need I go on!?

In any case, if I finally get around to fitting the winglets and getting them seamless the fuselage will be ready for paint. Zvezda recommend painting their 767 in "aluminium" I want to do this job in a specialist metallic paint though, anyone got a suggestion of which aluminium type paint to use?

Alclad II seem to do a good range but matching their reference photos against a real world photo is quite difficult to get right. I'm thinking their dull/dura/dark aluminium are the best shouts but if anyone can give me a correct paint I'd be most grateful.

Cheers keep yourselves safe,

M

Hi MBM

Respect from me for even attempting the EE IL-96!

Are you really sure you want a "metallic" finish? Metallic paints (Alclad, AK, Metalcote etc) are intended to represent unpainted metal which they do with varying degrees of success. Whatever colour Aeroflot's aircraft are, I'm pretty sure they are painted. Tamiya TS-76 Mica Silver might be worth considering, possibly over-sprayed with TS-65 Pearl Clear - that combination works well for the likes of Jet2 or the various Skyteam logojets.

If you are sure you want to go down the metallic route I'd recommend AK Interactive Xtreme Metal (not to be confused with their True Metal which is completely different). Personally I find AK more paint-like and easier to use than Alclad, a product I could never get along with. AK is also more robust and more forgiving if you have to touch up. They have a colour called Dark Aluminium which might be of interest to you. They also have various colour of steel and other metals. If it's any help this is a model I built for a Group Build a few years ago. The middle sections of the engine nacelles are Dark Aluminium which will give you some idea of the shade. The main metal paint is AK's normal Aluminium.

Whatever you decide, it would probably be a good idea to experiment on a scrap model (or a cheap kit bought for the purpose) before tackling your masterpiece.

Hope that's some help and I look forward to seeing the IL-96 in Ready for Inspection.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your advice. I think for simplicities sake I might go for the mica silver and pearl clear especially if it gets a Jet2 colour which is more or less what I'm after.

I'll bear in mind those colours for future metallic projects that require enamel/lacquer paints, that Britannia is a fine kit.

I wouldn't be brave enough to try it out for the first time on the IL96 although with all the effort to make even half presentable I do wonder whether it was worth it at times! The wingtips are the worst part of the kit, the two aren't even the same size or shape!

Many thanks for your advice it is much appreciated

I've come across the post with few airline colors including Aeroflot when long time ago I was trying to reproduce S7 livery: http://airliner-models.org/forum/topic/3193-цвета-авиакомпаний/?hl=цвета%2Bавиакомпаний&fromsearch=1 . Basically poster suggests that for modern Aeroflot for a base color you need to use any grey color that looks right to you and then put a very fine pearlescent white (for whatever reason google translates it to the "WHITE fine mother-of-pearl") over it.

Btw, it would be interesting to see your results b/c I have one in a stash that I put out few years ago when I saw a content of the box. Maybe I can get some inspiration to start mine :)

Ohh the EE IL-96😱

Well, its not their own tooling, but it is a very questionable kit to say the least.

I built both the -300 and the -400M.

Skodadriver's advice about the Aeroflot silverish look, makes sense.

The IL-96 ,as well as Aeroflots other aircrafts dont feature NMF finishes. They are painted.

Looking forward to see your build.

If you are planning to build it gear down,I recommend you to use the gear of a Revell 747-100/200 kit,I did that on mine and the results are very good and need just slight modification.

I also saw once aftermarket landing gear for the IL-96,but I cant remember who offers them.

Hi!

Thanks for your advice, that makes sense now you say it! I can't say I've really done schemes involving that silvery sheen before so its a new area for me.

Well I hope I can give you some inspiration to build it, although reshaping the left winglet and all the sanding still to do is a pain! I'll get a pre-paint/post primer shot done soon, sadly the university dissertation is taking priority!

All the best,

M

Hi Alex,

I saw one the other day on Ebay by a different company. I can't say I remember which though.

Both the EE kit? If so that's brave to put yourself through it twice,

I'll definitely go down that route I think it makes sense and should hopefully be the easiest way around it.

Thanks for the advice regarding the gear, I think Braz models make some but I think I'll opt for an inflight one just to reduce shelf space taken up!

Fingers crossed I can get some shots out of a painted kit before heading back to uni, sadly I can't easily spray there so its a limited painting window at the moment,

All the best,

M

Both versions are distributed by EE,but if I remember correctly, they were initially tooled by another company for Ilyjushin as advertisement gifts.

The shape of both ist captured well, but the fitting of the parts and the moulding quality leaves a lot to be desired. The IL-96M kit is even worse than the -300.

Here is the link to my -300 build from some years ago

I dont have more pictures from it unfortunately.

And the IL-96T

Both very impressive builds, I wouldn't know how tough the kit is from the end result. The irony is that the panel lines are nice and fine, a little to fine perhaps but on the Zvezda scale which is nice but yes the wings and engines are the worst parts by far. The fuselage was surprisingly not too bad, creating some lugs and sockets out of wire at the nose helped align things from there.

Seeing the Cubana one reminds me of seeing one dumping fuel on its way into Gatwick when it used to fly here.

Any suggestions on how to build back up the profile on one of the winglets? One came out much smaller than the other, one looks very IL-96 and the other looks like an A320 series blended winglet....

Thank you very much.

They are tough but with persistence and patience something nice can be achieved from them.

As for the winglet.Depending on the amount of build-up needed, you can add some plastic sheet to it and then cutting and sanding it to shape or use putty or miliput to build it up.

If you like to keep the panellines or some of the visible, you could rescribe those desired a bit deeper, following the lines on the wings. After the sanding sessions and psintjob, they will still be visible.I did that on the IL-96T.

On the -300 I didnt do it and the flaps and other details are almost invisible or inexistent.

I found these. they look pretty smart

Hi,

Thanks very much! Those might be very useful as the engines are one of the worst fits I've ever dealt with. Will have to check if the company are still making them though they look like excellent detail additions.

Cheers,

M
