Doubt I'll be able to find it again now but while on Facebook yesterday I seen a photo of a 43 Sqn. Phantom with a checked rudder. Think it was on the Scottish Aviation Nostalgia page :hmmm: Looked rather smart.

I would say it did! I would have liked to have seen the Typhoons in 43 Sqn markings, one of those with a checked rudder would be excellent! Maybe we'll see 43 fly again with the F-35, though I won't hold my breath!

Ps, to anyone reading this, I told a porky pie yesterday. The model is glossy enough so I'm presently adding the decals 😇

So, as I said, I told a lie in my last update (do forgive me) and was able to get the decals on today. The stencils took well over an hour by themselves before adding the 43 Squadron markings. Lots of sol and set needed to get the XV571 serial on the lower wings to settle, but other than that the decals behaved very well indeed. After a couple of hours, I sealed them in with another coat of gloss before popping on the upper Aux doors and FOD inserts. On the latter, they required a bit of sanding to fit correctly and are a bit rough in some areas (casting bubbles for example)and so I'd advise using the QMT etch examples or possibly the new Quickboost items on your kits as I will be doing on future builds.

Tomorrow I'm going to focus on the panel line wash and that lovely, heavy weathering on the undersides.

More soon and stay safe.

Excellent job on the decals Dave, not a bit of silvering in sight.

I really like the markings from this era as they add a nice bit of colour to the camouflage scheme.

Thanks mate, it's not looking too bad!

Fairly productive session today. Firstly, panel wash went on with the excess removed after an hour or so:

I then moved onto the big job, that heavy weathering on the undersides. Using the below for reference, I got cracking:

Various Abteilung oils, some dry brushing and Tamiya weathering sets used.

Some across the upper surfaces too:

I then sealed the lot in with another flat coat and that concluded the weathering. Took about an hour and a half to get it looking somewhat like the picture. After that, I popped on the landing gear, pylons, stabilisers and centre fuel tank:

Doesn't look too bad. I think the addition of the nice and clean Sparrows will set off the fuselage nicely.

More soon and stay safe.

Wow Dave, that looks fantastic!

You have really captured the weathering very well, nice and dirty in all the right places.

Thanks mate. I thought initially I maybe went a tad heavy, but weighing it up against some pictures in the reference magazine, it looks fairly close to a few, well worn Phantoms.

Thanks Mark!

I was able to slip in half an hour this evening after work. Wing tanks, missiles and exhausts popped on and I removed the cockpit masking:

The clean missiles give a nice contrast to the grubby fuselage. Some etch to add to the canopy then just that and the seats to pop in.

More soon and stay safe

Very nice Dave, as you say the contrast between the clean missiles and the grubby aircraft is great, it really helps to show just how dirty these aircraft could get by being kept busy chasing Bears.

Thanks mate! I think it looks ok thus far, some areas do need another coat of flat though, I must have missed them initially

I only recently discovered, from reading the previously mentioned Phantom magazine, that the Spey engined jets struggled for power at higher altitude, which seems a bit strange given that they were primarily in service to intercept Soviet bombers!

That was the problem with replacing the J79s with Speys, the Spey engines were more powerful making UK Phantoms faster at low level but at altitude the wider fuselage caused extra drag.

Your Phantom is looking very good, remember that the oily "deposits" on the underside would not be matt. :like:

The oily areas are semi gloss, not sure if it shows up too well in the pictures. There are a few areas on the upper camouflage that I missed with the initial coat of flat!

If only! I think I'm right in saying all the Typhoon Squadrons have been designated?

Sadly it seems so yes but in What-if world... think this is @Wez cue to mention a suitable GB proposal ;)

Final few touches added over the last day and a bit. Etch parts for the canopy, masking off, seats in and some 'chipping' around the cockpit sills etc with an AK pencil. Calling this one done.

With the 111(F) Squadron Tornado F.3:

More pictures in RFI.

As always, many thanks to all who commented/followed throughout the build. Much more enjoyable than the Revell Tornado!

Stay safe
