ForestFan
Hi all, here is my entry. I've had this in the stash for a good few years now, might as well build it! When released this new kid on the block just about usurped the Hasegawa kit as the kit to build in 1/48. Of course it has now been bettered by the Tamiya kit. It's been a while since I built a 48 scale jet so be gentle.... Anyway the intention is straight from the box but with aftermarket decals for an Iranian bird in the greyish/blue camo (I've already done the Fujimi kit in 1/72 in the original classic scheme. Will try and post a few more pics of the contents later - work first! Col.
Great subject choice Bryn and in a less common scheme as well This one will make an interesting thread for many as the F-14 is always a popular subject and I'm sure many of us will be keen to hear your thoughts on the HobbyBoss kit. How was the TS-11 in the background by the way? Have one in the stash I'm keen to start on sometime soon.

Re the Iskra, it’s not as nice as their Hurricane! Nice detail but not as great fit wise (plus I’ve rushed it a bit so that doesn’t help). It will be in the paint shop later this week I hope....

Hewy
Exellent, I've got the hobbyboss "D" version of this kit along with the amk "D" unfortunately no tamiya kit yet but an "A"version could be soon, if i put my letter to santa up the chimney soon, I'm looking forward to seeing it built up, iranian camo👍 ,will you be going all flaps and slats, and wings forward?

Thanks Hewy, must admit I'd love to get both the Tamiya F-14A and an AMK F-14D but with this kit and the Eduard "Danger Zone" boxing already in the stash it's a little hard to justify....Regarding this build, I think for simplicity and storage space it will be a wings swept back build. ForestFan
Here's a few pics of what's in the box/how the box is packed, it's a big box filled to the brim! Apologies for the pics by the way, I don't have a photo booth and the lights in the den generate shadow that's hard to avoid 20201123_183253 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201123_183318 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201123_183334 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201123_183353 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201123_183406 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201123_183418 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201123_183503 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201123_183611 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201123_183703 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201123_183851 by bryn robinson, on Flickr Edited November 24, 2020 by ForestFan

modelling minion
A great choice of subject, both the aircraft and the operator. I have built a couple of Iranian subjects and need to add an F-14 to the collection. There certainly does look to be a lot of plastic in the box too. ForestFan
Hi all, just to prove that battle has commenced here's a couple of pics, probably the most boring start that you will see! I must admit I was a bit daunted by the amount of parts and where to start, so I thought I'd get the wings done. As you will see there is a bit of filling needed but nothing too difficult. I need to get hold of some decals to do the Iranian grey/grey blue camo, I was going to order the FCM sheet as it also includes an Iranian F-4D that I fancy doing but since I last looked some dastardly devil has purchased the last one - typical!! Anyway a couple of the most boring pics you will see on the internet are below🤪 20201205_153333 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201205_173957 by bryn robinson, on Flickr

ForestFan
Just a quick update, firstly I managed to sand the filler used on the wing under surfaces so all good there. I have then primed the majority of the areas that will be white (undercarriage etc) and commenced some sticking together of the parts. I can report that the fit is great so far with nice details. The only addition I may add is a wire or two to the u/c legs. The negative is that many/majority of the parts have various sprue 'pegs' that need trimming off meaning a lot of re-priming/painting, and with white being the fickle colour that she is I'm not confident how this will look. I might therefore re-prime the affected bits in black and then paint gloss white, madness?? I've also primed the engines in black, for some reason they are quite complete but there's no trolley to display them. I am thinking though of getting some intake blanking plates/FOD guards so may not bother too much about these. Anyway a couple of pics just to keep documenting progress: 20201206_171757 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201206_171529 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201206_171618 by bryn robinson, on Flickr
modelling minion
Good to see this one underway. Getting the wings done early is a good choice when building a Tomcat as they are then ready for when you want to join up the fuselage. I know that Hi-Decal do a set for Iranian F-14's which has the blue/grey option on it if you can't find the FCM sheet.

Col.
Black seems a stark primer for white areas Do you have an lighter greys to use instead? Or perhaps even to apply as an intermediate coat between the black and white layers?
ForestFan
Hello again all. Just a quick update, firstly a few bits arrived from Hannants so at least I have the decals, and also no longer need to worry about the air intake innards! A couple of pics of where I am at with the build, not too much progress but plodding on. The engines are nice, a shame they will be hidden. Col.
Oooh, aftermarket goodies, nice! It's a shame all that engine detail gets buried inside the fuselage out of sight. Seems a bit pointless them going to all the effort of creating it
ForestFan
Hi all, firstly I hope you have had/are having a nice festive break! Let's hope 2021 brings a swathe of good news... Anyway on to this build. I must say that I am not loving this at the moment. In my opinion Hobby Boss have over engineered things and created problems for ham fisted modellers like me if things aren't perfectly aligned! I mean, why all that engine detail if there's no way of showing it? With rant mode off the pics below show progress. You will see there is some filling needed on the underneath air intake sections. Also, the cockpit will need tidying and potentially the grey lightening up a tad. Thanks for looking 20201227_182342 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201227_182324 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201227_182426 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20201227_182454 by bryn robinson, on Flickr
modelling minion
Agree with you completely about manufacturers giving you things like engines in a kit but no way to actually show them, total waste of time and plastic and Hobbyboss are far from alone in this. Despite their over engineering you are doing a great job on her.
ForestFan
Hi folks, here's a quick update. Basically I have managed to get the cockpit built up - all straight from the box. Not as refined as it could be if using etched brass/resin or that new fangled 3d printed stuff that's now appearing, but as the lid will be down it should look ok for my needs. BTW I read that if it wasn't for the Iranian order for F-14s it is likely that the programme would've died due to lack of $$, makes you think.....!
