NoSG0
Sorry to see this. Saw it on the Dominic Gates twitter. Looks like it may have been the Li-Io batteries eventually saying enough? https://www.flightglobal.com/airframers/eviation-alice-fire-involved-lithium-ion-batteries-which-ignited-after-hours-of-powerplant-tests/141228.article
Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies
Any radio control model flyer could tell you that lithium batteries of various types get hot and that they need cooling just the same as the motor and speed controller/variable speed drive. There aren't enough details in the article but one would hope their battery box was a little more sophisticated than an insulated oven and did infact having some forced cooling arrangement.
Alan P
And that is why we have battery start limits...🤔 If the article is accurate, it would seem to be an entirely avoidable incident. Such a shame. This was a telling quote... Quote Given the ambitious nature of the programme, obtaining certification in such a short period of time seems extremely challenging. What’s happened to aviation?
Graham Boak
I suspect it has been invaded, as in so many other areas of life, by people who insist on quick results and think regulations/bureaucracy are restrictions on free thinking and progress rather than good guidelines as a result of what goes wrong if you don't.

I can just imagine the discussion at the flight design/test office. Engineer 1: I fly RC planes on the weekend, the batteries get really hot Rest of the team: Facial expressions of Attenborough and Stewart Reminds me of the scene from the 1965 flight of the Phoenix. Sorry for the quality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iQW_FQpdvc

I read that in the context of the original plan to get certification started for a 2022 launch, and the article subtly raising doubts as to the feasibility of that timetable. You can't expect a publication bluntly stating 'not gonna happen pal' without running the risk of a defamation suit
