Trumpter RA5C Vigilante

The wife has had me busy with helping her getting ready for a big test so I didn't have any bench time on Sunday but managed a quick 30 mins last night where I assembled the port main wing. This morning I thought I'd test fit... The result shows yet more fettling needed which is a shame because the wing itself is a lovely bit of engineering and I now have to take a file to it!

Hopefully it just a case of adjusting the wing alignment tab and not the trailing edges. I'll put the starboard wing together later to see its the same on that side.

So once I got back from work I assembled the starboard wing and dry fit both, the starboard wing fitted better than the port side but still need adjustment.

after some careful trimming of the alignment tab and light sanding at the rear mating surfaces I got a much nicer fit that just needs a smidge of filler.

I haven't decide if the wing tips will be in the folded position as yet but I did decide not to have the flash pods or fuel tanks fitted as 95% of the available pictures show the Vigilantes rarely had them fitted. Not sure if this one will fit inside my display cabinet yet as it a bit larger than most of my other 1/72 aircraft.

After looking at the article linked by Dennis_C it looks like the aircraft I will be doing is a later aircraft so the straight edge intake will be correct. As this is the first Trumpeter kit I've done I have been pleased for the most part but then I come across things like this

8faf1f91-f11e-45ef-b15b-49a1c9a273c6.JPG

Initially I thought those 2 large blocks were part of the aircraft but they are part of the sprue gate! some careful removal needed. Fitted the nose.

64636533-4e63-4587-89bf-5fd7f158a359.JPG

And made up the intakes and one of the horizontal tail planes.

The Trumpeter instruction are well designed but sometimes a bit lacking, the intakes are not perpendicular when assembled but this is not shown, see below.

But when dry fitted the reason for this became apparent.

But the Trumpeter gene strikes again when viewed from the side, some more careful fitting to eliminate the gap .needed

Quick update, I'm still waiting on the CTA decals to arrive from Moscow, been 2 weeks now and they are still within Russia somewhere according to Russian Post tracking, hence my switch to the B24. As soon as they arrive I'll get back on this one.

The CTA decal have arrived from Russia today, looks like this was designed before the Harrier set that I already have and used as its not laid out per aircraft but to squeeze the most decals on the sheet

The choice for the vigilante are as follows

I'm leaning towards Bu149313, the second aircraft, as I have done 2 aircraft in the SEA colours this year. I can see an A4E and A6A on the shopping list soon.

Been to my local model shop, Elite and picked up the Mr Colour paints for aircraft Bu149313 yesterday. Slowing picking up more of this paint and replacing the Tamiya acrylics that I've been using up to now.

Tail section, camera pod and rear cockpit glass in place, some parts like the canopy literally clicked into place but the tail section has gaps on every side.

I plan to get the front seat canopy on and then tackle the gap on the tail.

Although I am a bit late to join this party I really enjoyed from the progress done so far.

I have a pair of 1:72 Vigilante (one from Trumpeter that you build here and one from Airfix with old molds). Most probably I will build the old Airfix kit in SEA colors using your build as reference.

Been neglecting this one in favour of a couple of simpler builds that I hope to have done by new years eve, first is Hasegawa A1H Skyraider with "special bomb"

2ea2019d-3b30-48f3-9040-aa5271ba0b11.JPG

"special bomb" with Mk81 tail fin added as Hasegawa didn't add this detail.

And the second is Revell's re-boxing of the Dragon Do335 Pfeil. Never done a Dragon kit before and its fit in places is terrible, but managed to coble this together in about 7 hours work so far.

Once the new year is in I should be back on the Vigilante.

As the paint on the Do335 has failed miserably so I pulled the Vigilante out of its tray and cracked on. Firstly the canopy was fitted and masked.

Next up is addressing the hideous gap between at the tail section.

3f67b9d3-2896-4b1a-8f0d-f444fe3d5854.JPG

Some 0.5mm plastic card shims were cut and fitted. Once this has set I should be able to trim level and less filler should be needed.

While I had the plastic card out I added some to the intake to see if I can improve that joint.33a586cd-4aa1-4c45-a30a-8b02b06db8ed.JPG

A bit of a gap since last update on the Vigilante (2 years and 7 months) but before I can really get into the Mohawk I still need to clear a draw in my WIP cupboard so this was moved from the bottom to the top. Finally finished the seams at the rear and fettled both wings for a better fit and joined together. Even without the outboard wing section it only just fits into my display case so it will be wing tips folded up.

Unfortunately Trumpeter did not include any intake ducts or engine face but its a deep dark void so we'll see how it looks once the intakes are on, these have been sprayed white already.

Intakes were masked with foam and maskol and then fitted to the fuselage, just need a little Mr Surfacer 500 to fill some small gaps along the wing roots. Painted inside the camera housing before the glazing is fitted. That its for now SWMBO has had me fitting a new shower so I been chasing leaks with silicon, hopefully that will be finished this weekend so I can get back to the Vigilante.

A bit less of gap since last update, work and wife are still keeping me busier than I'd like but finally got the paint on. Quite happy with the colour scheme with only 3 small area that need to respraying.

I'll respray the intake and the tail section that had a bit of over spray and start on the undercarriage.
