janneman36
I bit the bullet already by starting to fit those flaps on the Zvezda Hercules last few day's and i was pleasantly surprised that they fit! This topic is the follow up in being the kit actually build and following Tony in his wake of his C1.. I am going to build a Antarcticdevronsix VXE6 aircraft I am going to use the Max decalset for this and the Flightpath skiset which actually for the italeri C130. Already been fitting the skiset yesterday and with some minor work this can be used to a good result .. I already had been dryfitting the flaps and housing and now the housing is glued in place with and end plate in place. Next i had the flaps thinned dowm a bit to make them more flat on the underside and to give the inboard flaps their distictive shape as they have a small curve downwards. This curve is not to be found on the outboard flaps for as far i was able to see and it isat least not apparent when seen from the side.. Left the flap as it is original and the right is modified to look more realistic.. And both being done .. Also the wingroot trailing edge is not correctly done ! Zvezda rendition.. Left side modified and right is still the Zvezda... I suspect that doing that wingfairing as it is it also caused the inboard flaps being wrongley shaped . The lines of the underwing and upperwing are more correct in the Italeri. After my alterations it made sense and it sits were it should be wich wouldn't if i would use the zvezda lines as a guideline. It also reflects reality a bit more 😀 Anyway if you like to have a good photographic reference then the book of Duke Hawkins is a musthave with tons of pictures .. TheyJammedKenny!
Great subject (the Antarctic bird), and good catch on the trailing edge root fairing. Not a difficult correction to make, fortunately.

Not really difficult but when you do this all the lines in the wing are in the wrong place..I don’t mind it by the way... You can see in the picture of the real one that they are in the wrong place to start...but not a big deal I think as there so many more kits with wrongly placed lines 😜 In the meantime I still am enjoying this beastie ..fit and and construction is very good..this is the “to buy” kit if you want a Hercules.. cheers, Jan

stevehnz
Nice to see this, my favourite C-130 after our Kiwi ones. I saw the VXE-6 birds departing Christchurch for the ice on several occasions. I'd love a sheet of 1/144 decals for this, a 1/72 Herc is just too big for me, especially when you're after more than one. I'll be watching on all the same though. Steve.
SPang
Hi, Very interesting fo follow your build. I have same idea with Zvezda kit but with the new propeller that i see during the Paris Air Show 2019. Your lucky to have the Max decals. Cheers SPang
Scooby
Looking forward to your build, had a ski equipped Herc visit our base in the 90s as it was heading to the Arctic. I have walkaround pictures somewhere.

I have walkaround pictures somewhere. Always interested to see those 😁 you are lucky man to see such an aircraft and @SPang as well they are pretty rare at my side of the world! Though i saw one flying over here once but that one was at cruise altitude but I could recognize it by the orange tail😁 @tonyot thanks much appreciated 👍 and a big thank you to all who appreciate the build.. The last two day’s I’ve been busy with the detailing of the cockpit and I decided to test the crew provided in the kit! This is one of the first kits were the crewmembers are actually able to hold the steering colum without being in a awkward position amd no filler needed around the shoulders.. I had the wheelwels painted up with Stynylrez white primer and for the nose gear I had the cockpit subassembly in place! This way I don’t have too much paint sitting on places were it shouldn’t be as want all to fit when closing it up.. At first I painted the cockpit in a two tone grey light on top and the darker below this I did because there are a lot of differences between C-130’s worldwide but after close examination of Skibirds I diverted to the light grey on top and the russian cockpit color on the lower part ... There are also a lot of differences between those older Herks with the floor colors as the one on the following picture is blue. This picture is a screenshot from video on YouTube about a skibird with even a cockpit look around. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcH01zre58Q The cockpit blue-green color is a mixture of azure blue, RLM 65 and gunship green from mr. Paint ...I didn’t follow a formula as this was done by the eye until it looked good <a href=🤓"> After finishing this I had to do some decalling and Zvezda supplied us with a very comprehensive decalset which doesn’t need replacement in the form of an prepainted etch at all.. There are a few issues with the placement diagram as it shows the circuit breaker panels placed horizontally while they need to be vertical. The decals is correct and is suspect they messed up the drawings. The two larger circuit breaker decals have the number 06 and 09 on the sheet and this is not so handy thing as you could have the wrong panel on the wrong place...mine are correct as they are checked whit the real thing.. They also made a mistake on the center console as the number two decal is swapped with the number three decal ....they need to be the other way around or else the decals ain’t gonna fit and also the instrument panel decal is a tat on the large side in height but perfectly usable! The crew have a complimentary member on the deck and that is the guy reading the checklist (PJ productions military transport crew set)...I did this because the third one in the Zvezda set doesn’t have a seatbelt so safety wise it isn’t handy to have one siting there near the pedestal with no seatbelts on.. This one is also more serious in doing it’s job.. It all needs to be clearcoated and the crew needs to be glued to the seats..once the fuselage is closed there isn’t much to be seen in the back of the pit so I didn’t wanted to do more detailing in that part .. That’s all folks!!! cheers, Jan 20
janneman36
For those interested I found a nice virtual tour in which you can see the whole interior of a period USAF C-130E at the airforce museum.. DonH
Great to see another Herc in progress. I expect mine from Lucky Model by the end of the year. Thanks for the tips on decal placements, the pit looks great OOB and the crew figures really add an extra zip to it. Nice choice of markings also!

At least that was my experience in my time on Hercs. He has to reach for the fuel controls and pumps and also checks for popped circuit breakers and moves around often in the cockpit. 3
Jfgred1
Excellent build so far. And the final chosen livery would be very eye catching. In the meantime, waiting for Zvezda to go and do the 1/48th version...... wonder who candle I have to light up to make it happen... Please, keep it coming.
janneman36
Thank you for all the nice comments and info gents..at least there are a lot of Hercules aficionados around the globe😄 I hope that there will be a 1/48 version for those who want one .. Today I did a little bit more but not much more haha.. As I progressed with that cockpit I just could not close it up without the levers in the center console so decided to make a set ...they are tiny though🤓 I was amazed that I pulled it off... Still all that time I didn’t painted those oxygen bottles, on these arctic birds they are yellow instead of the raf ones being black. But spray painted those today. In the end I managed to fit those ski pants fairings for the wheelwells, they do fit with just a tad of adjustments... Cheers, Jan

janneman36
Well today I did some detailing for the cargo compartment ..I didn’t want to leave it empty ! Freight pallets being made with the help of my rpz mitre cutter tool which in fact was very helpful in this proces.. I used some 1x1,5 mm u beam for the roller rails on which the pallets are placed! The rollersare made from some small diameter rod which is cut with the mitre cutter as well.. I don’t place rollers in all the rails as these are not to be seen with the pallets placed in their positions. The pallets size was found on the www and it was spot on as a Hercules can host 5 of these in this configuration .. This is the idea .. cheers, Jan
janneman36
Did have the flue that affected all my muscles and so on this week that seriously tampered my modelling intentions.... Still managed to do some small stuff like building the cargo! The oil drums are 36 barrels and each barrel consists of three parts ....frustrating as al these parts needed a seem cleanup as well🤪 I bought some lasercut wooden boxes as well with some wire/tubing rolls . all of this is stuff for railway diorama’s😉 The lasercut stuff looks cool though.. Barrels to be painted.. This is how it will be , I wanted to stow the freight from front to back but when closed up you won’t see much from the second pallet on to the front... So i decided to leave the rest out and spare them for a future project! The silver cilinders in the front are actually steel bearings and these are placed in order to keep the nose down and the weight should be more than sufficient .. The pallets will be netted as well.. The cockpit again with the oxygen bottles placed and given a set of oxygen masks 😁 That’s all folks!!! Cheers, Jan
