Another name change! Desert storm hawk..

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I will be contributing to this GB with Y Ddraig Goch (A Welsh Dragon).

This will be a black aircraft with a dragon on each side of the fuselage courtesy of the Eurodecals sheet. I intend to have this flying on a stand so should be a relatively quick build. I was tempted by some PJ productions pilots but have located some volunteers from an Airfix Jet provost which should look the part.

In terms of the finish I might be tempted to break my duck with Alclad gloss black! We will see. Any idea if I can spray this over acrylic primer or will it be too ‘hot’.

Hi everyone,

The deadline for this is closer than I realised, so I am breaking one of my rules and having two builds on the go at the same time! The other is an Eduard Spitfire mk.1 in the WiP section if you’re interested...

Onto the hawk then! Looks like a nice kit, did my standard washing up bowl rinse for the sprues:

I hadn’t realised some nice rocket pods and sidewinders are  included in the box. This has got me thinking that maybe a what if point defence fighter might be a nice idea... naturally still using the nice dragon decals that I forked out for!

Stay Tuned...

Hi all,

(Less talking more building I know I know!!!)

I have decided to represent this aircraft as a what if. What if the RAF painted their 'aggressor' aircraft like their US Navy comrades.

I am going to paint my Hawk in a mid stone and dark earth wrap around scheme.  This will have the black dragon from the Dragon Hawks decal sheet above.

Can't wait to build some steam up. All I have done so far is cut a few parts out.

Onwards!

  • Doccur changed the title to Y Ddraig Goch - RAF Aggressor

Made a start on this yesterday, cut and glued a few bits. Stole a pilot from an Airfix jet provost. Going to prime and hopefully get the cockpit done by Wednesday! We are on a tight schedule now!

Didnt think much to the ejection seats... actually I would go far as to say they are terrible.

Noticed something very annoying too. I have short shot fuel tanks 🤦🏻‍♂️

Might have to put sidewinders on instead of the tanks now!

Mine were the same, well luckily not quite as bad as that so I was able to recue mine with filler.  A good job for me as I'm packing no weapons on my WHIF build.

Absolutely unacceptable to me @HoolioPaulio, a modern tool from a quality manufacturer like revell... have they heard of quality control?

I am not too bothered as I think this will look meaner with the sidewinders!

But Revell haven’t endeared themselves to me here!

I agree, there's a lot about this kit that feels unacceptable.  The front windscreen clear part the worst offender, seems like everyone has the same issue with that...

Thanks Icarus, I have already been sorted out with some!

@HoolioPaulio

Hi all,

Got the pit finished off, didn’t get any photos before sealing the fuselage halves but here is a good shot:

As this is a what if I decided to give the pilot a bright helmet instead of the drab green. I asked the mrs what to paint it and she quickly said orange for the mighty hatters so here we are!

So I also have hacked a hole in the underside of the wing to fit the stand.

So here is the underside which I fear a lot of work is going to take to look presentable! Those seams fill me with dread 🥲

Have you tried to fit it yet?

It's coming together really well though Ash and it's good to see another Whif in the mix.

And a better shot of the pit for anyone who was interested:

  • Doccur changed the title to Another name change! Desert storm hawk..

Hi all!

Been tinkering away so I don’t leave myself too much to do on the run in this weekend...

As it stands I did a quick fix on the canopy, filler on the fuselage shaped so there isn’t a gap! I’m not too bothered about a perfect fit!

And here we are with canopy masked and applied:

Ready for primer! I shall try and get that on tomorrow.

So some of you may have noticed I’ve changed the title of this thread... so I had a root around of my decals and found this from a revell Jaguar:

So forget the dragon... I am going with a desert wraparound, with the two tone roundels with the Debbie pin up on the nose.

Hi all,

Canopy sprayed black, then sprayed with Vallejo PU grey primer. Went on ok.

Tried a very basic form of pre sharing by doing some very crude random splotches of black over the primer. Shall not be doing it again!

50711539332_93192edbc1_b.jpg

Then finally for this evening, on with the Mid stone. I put a drop of white in just to lighten it a tad. Used Humbrol acrylic, but forgot despite the thinner, how much of a pig it is to spray!

It may be a photo finish tomorrow but with only the dark earth to spray and decals and maybe some weathering, I should be in with a fighting chance.

Cheers

Hi all, spent today masking as spraying the dark earth... thus wraparound was a faff!

The Vallejo dark earth went on beautifully as expected. Next I have sprayed Pledge/Klear on in preparation for the decals tonight.

Hi all!

Bit of a rush but finished in time for the deadline!

Here she is:

Had to resort to the rocket pods as the fuel tanks kindly donated by @nimrod54 haven’t found their way to me yet! I don’t mind. I think it looks mean with the pods.

Been an up and down build, but happy with the result.

cheers
