1/32 Scale Mountfleet Round Table Minesweeper

Recommended Posts

Good Evening Shipmates.

Hit the big 50 a few months back and this was given to me as a pressie. Better than a few bob that gets wasted! It is from Mountfleet and is bloody big! Hull and superstructure are ABS, Tehre is also plastic, over a 1000 White Metal part amongst the wood bits n bobs.

Bit of History:

The Round Table class was a small class of trawlers built for the British Royal Navy in 1941–1942.[1] The class were built by two Aberdeen shipbuilding firms Hall, Russell & Company and J. Lewis & Sons Ltd.[2]

All were built to a 1936 design, the Star of Orkney,[3] by Hall, Russell & Co but were commissioned as minesweepers

So they have that little bit of character of a Trawler too about them

Anyhoo progress has been slow, I am waiting for a sound unit from the UK before I stick the decks on and hopefully that will come soon, Some other sub assemblies have been started too.

Fist bit was to Fill the top part with car filler a sand smoot, Next was to drill out the Prop shaft, Yes this will be RC.

the Rudder hole was also drilled and the rudder mounted using some Aerial Mast Tubing.  The Rudder skeg was blended in again with P38 and a lot of elbow grease. Messey ol job

next bit was to put in the side supports for the deck, Little cuts were made to enable it to twist and abck along the inside of the hull.

To enable to batteries and weight to come out as this tops out at around 25 kilos weight and not carryable I made a Guide rail out oa wood and plastic trays for the batteries and lead weight to make them easily removable. (in Theory) Here is the Support being resined in place

The deck was planed to shape and test fitted as we went along, Could not resist putting them together to see what she will look like, the Jet Stream is not part of the ship!

The main frames to support the deck were also glued into place.

You can see the 'rail' tray and the motor in place here. Basic but affective.

Some of the moldings were not that great, I had to cut these one and re sit it so it is square

50584802107_100ca72217_k.jpgIMG_6685 by Georgeconna32, on Flickr

I will be putting a smoke unit it her too and this is the start of that process. It is a water base mister with a fan that blows a nice plume out the chimney (not black though). The Skylight of the engine room were also cut out.

The handrail knobs were also not good cast so brass ones are on order now, no point in putting substandard bit on this ship.

I then Tackled the Forward gun platform, All built from ply and laid nice a flat and of course warps when the damp weather came in. I have fix that though, The 12lb gun is white metal and weighs a fair bit and that sits on top of the platform. I have now soldered that together.

Gun mounting pin was short shot so a brass one was soldered into a Drilled out hole, Have to be very careful with white metal so used a low temp solder and temp control Iron.

Hello Jamie,

Sir Lancelot it will be.

I wonder you might be in the know so and able to help as inof on the net is hard to come by.

Did these ship ever get the camo scheme similar to the Corvettes on the western approaches in the  Atlantic? The Grey seems a tad bit dull and I fancy doing one of those schemes on it.

Similar to this chaps one, He suggest they had: https://www.modelboats.co.uk/forums/memberpostings.asp?c=42235

Regards

George

Hi George, these ships aren't photographed well enough to say how they looked throughout their careers but for certain points in time I can offer:

Ship    -     Pendant Number  -      Time Period    -    Known camouflage scheme

Sir Agravaine   -  T230  -   1942        -       507A Home Fleet Grey - no pendant number shown

Sir Galahad      -  T226  -   1942        -       507A Home Fleet Grey - no pendant number shown

Sir Gareth        -  T227  -    1942       -       507A Home Fleet Grey - no pendant number shown

Sir Geraint       -  T240  -    1942       -       507A Home Fleet Grey - pendant number white

Sir Kay             -  T241  -    Apr1943 -       2 colour Western Approaches - pendant number dark

Sir Lamorack   -  T242   -   Apr1943 -       appears to be white, pendant number medium tone

Sir Lancelot     -  T228   -   1942       -       507A Home Fleet Grey - no pendant number shown

Sir Tristram     -   T229   -   1942       -       507A Home Fleet Grey - no pendant number shown

What I would gently point out is that the modeller on that link you gave hasn't really understood a Western Approaches scheme properly, but this is largely fuelled by the fact that far, far more models are well beyond the realms of credibility than are within them. It's common to see sharply contrasting choices of colours on models and the usual culprits are either much too dark or much too saturated blues or olive greens. These are not good representations of the Western Approaches Light Blue or Western Approaches Light Green designed by Peter Scott. The Western Approaches paints were pale pastel shades. The fairly dark, dirty greenish grey used on the model linked above doesn't much resemble a proper Western Approaches scheme. Unfortunately the misconception is somewhat reinforced by a small number of Kodakrome prints of Canadian ships. Whilst the Royal Canadian Navy was nominally acting as a squadron subordinate to the Royal Navy and in theory using the same paints, there are numerous cases of Canadian paints being significantly off-spec compared to the British standard. That's fine to apply to Canadian ships but it is not indicative of what was used on British vessels using paints manufactured by British companies.

Note that I'm not at all claiming that every British batch was absolutely identical, nor that there would not be perceptible variations once applied - what I'm saying is that British paints were made to within a tolerance such that you'd recognise what it was fairly consistently, and that some Canadian paints and particularly some examples photographed are so far outside those tolerances that they are not recognisable as similar to the British ones and shouldn't be used as a guide for nominal British manufactured paints.

Morning all,

Slow Progress on this one but 2 days over we weekend in the shed moved it on somewhat, Few Steps forward and a couple back !

Started Detailing the wheel house interior with a few bits on bobs to make it interesting. Crew Companions and stowage lockers were made up from 1mm ply, Sanded and sealed ready for painting. Hand rails around the wheel house were a right pain to get right but are now in situ and make it pop a bit. The Stern gun tub was build up from Styrene and came out pretty will, My last tube of Green Stuff coming into play here. (what will I do next!)

Rudder Servo also installed. The Flag locker was built from the printed sheet but when fitted it was too small and another was fabricated.

Searchlight tower was also built up and handrails set in place and this is where I had a small issue, despite placing the Funnel as per the plans it was a few MM too forward and snagged the searchlight tower so I have to add in 5mm to enable me to move the whole wheelhouse and upper portion forward to clear the funnel hence the green area behind the wheel house cabin.

I used Humbrol 147 for the grey so hope that looks ok to you Maritime modellers. I'll ad a few hues in here and there to vary the look.

What are you trying to replicate with that? Your model, your rules etc but it's not similar to Home Fleet Grey and doesn't seem a suitable base for the few Round Tables in Western Approaches schemes either. Whether it's agreeable with anyone on here is irrelevant really - it's more whether you consider the colour a part of the overall visual impression you get when you look at the model and whether or not having it painted something close to reality is as important or less important than the build quality and details you apply.

I generally don't comment on builds which end up not looking like what they're supposed to be due to colour choice unless invited to, so hopefully this comment doesn't cause any unintended ire :)

Tks Jamie, Appreciate the input.

when i meant a few hues probably Pre/post shading and weather etc so it is not a 1 colour grey blob!

I'm not really a Ship bloke, Just like building and history is Mostly Aeroplanes so limited Knowledge on these Ships plus the fact there is not a whole lot on the internet that stood out on the exact Grey.

I've limited access to paints here so could you advise  the closest colour in the Humbrol // Revell Range to Home Fleet grey, I tried a few different hues but some were just too Dark for my liking. a Quick Search reveals 145 could be a good Match?

the bloke that did this used 147, Did not think it look too bad?

Tks  Again

Hi George,

The cosmetic appeal is one thing but modellers in general tend to just copy one another to the point that something very wrong is regarded as correct because it's what they expect to see. I don't know who built the one above but whilst a pretty model of something it's not a true scale model of a real Round Table class ship and rather a fictional one. Home Fleet Grey was dark, and as per the table I compiled above, Sir Lancelot wore Home Fleet Grey, Admiralty Pattern 507A. It might be the case that another colour was worn at a later date, but that's probably not likely to be overall 507C which that light grey is most similar to (although it lacks the ultramarine tint to really pass as 507C) which was typically an overseas station paint rather than one used in Home Waters where the Round Table class did most of their work.

hms-3301_-_Copy.jpg?v=1616487835

hms-3311_-_Copy.jpg?v=1616487835

An example of a different Round Table class ship known to have worn a Western Approaches type scheme (2 colour, I think) is HMT Sir Kay

hms-3306_-_Copy.jpg?v=1616487835

As to Humbrol or Revell I will need to defer to others as I don't have very much of either for comparison. Most of the commonly used Humbrol paints are either yellowish greys for the lighter RN paints or greenish greys for the darker RN paints - whereas in reality the RN 507A and 507C were both based on white, black and ultramarine and had a distinct bluish caste.

I can offer this which will give you some information about the nature of 507A

https://www.sovereignhobbies.co.uk/pages/royal-navy-colours-of-world-war-two-pattern-507s-g10-and-g45

The Round Table class can look good in the dark greys many of them (including HMT Sir Lancelot) really wore - although it's possible I got my model wrong with respect to the underwater hull. At this time a ship of this stature may not have had a boot topping and what the photograph above may have been showing me is an overall black bottom.

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for That and for the Photos, Very interesting especially the Black bottom!

I ended up doing a re spray into a Darker grey last night, the Light greys looked a bit to Modernish really so I am glad that I got some feed back before I had most of this done. That is a great help.

These are taken with a flash but you can see the light grey on the front locker and there is a bit drop in shades!

Your model is quite spectacular too.

I notice a curios Black and white marking on the Rat lines on one of the imagines you kindly shared of Sir Lancelot. I imagine these are black and white? I might add that scheme to my model.

Bit more done this week as had a weeks hols off work divided between the garden and the shed.

The finishing touches were to replace the Rivet heads lost whilst tidying up the superstructure.

The first coat overlaid was done over some black pre-shading. I must admit the Darker grey suits it brilliantly and makes it more warlike!

Another bit done today

The Boat Yard is on O/T this week. Back to work tomorrow after the week off 😕 the Cabin and superstucture Windows in, Gun Platform more or less done

I need to get better cowl vents and the ones supplied are just very poor and too thin to tidy up as per the pics and the hole that has appeared in the one I tried to do.

and the leccy stuff is being worked on and where best to place what is needed where, Although it is huge hull the batteries and smoke unit take up a fair bit of space. Need some thought to go into that next step as the aperture to the hull itself is very narrow.

  • George Norman changed the title to 1/32 Scale Mountfleet Round Table Minesweeper

Good Afternoon Gents,

Thanks for the comment so far folks,

Looking forward to the weekend now!

Still working away on this one, Lots of tidying up with the white metal parts and my order from Cornwall Model Boats arrived with the replacement cowl vents which look fab, I think they look to be 3D printed.

I was hoping to have the sound unit installed but these are not able from Action just yet so I have installed the speaker and I will work on how to install the other wiring but the next big step will be the sticking the deck on permanently and after placing all the bits n bobs on the deck I noticed something is just not right.......

As per the photo I have the Main Deck Level as the bubble indicates (these are not calibrated BTW!)

51106008145_37bfd5f209_k.jpgIMG_7144 by Georgeconna32, on Flickr

However the Bow End is somewhat out. The Portholes seem to be at the same height so I wonder has something gone wrong when it popped from the mold!

Some Mismatch on the Rubbing strakes down the side when compared straight on.

Wooden shim on the right had ride of the pic shows the difference

51106007510_77692f9b7d_k.jpgIMG_7147 by Georgeconna32, on Flickr

Also the Superstructure stuff is not glued on so don't panic! (just yet!)

Here are some other Items I have been doing, New cowl vents came and were mounted on some carbon fiber tube, all I could get!

The Lewis Guns were soldered together, These are pretty Basic so I've order 4 from Gas Patch models to substitute the kit supplied ones. It should really make that area pop once installed..

Shells were sprayed red to create a red band and these will be a lead colour from what I have seen on the net that looks to be correct.

After much deliberation it was a case of 2 steps forward 1 step back what ever I was going to do., I took the high side down, Easiest option really. The next issue is relocation of one of the Starboard Portholes as that was placed too high. Need to get some P39 for that me thinks.

It seems to be all plumb now, Wheelhouse deck, Main deck and Foredeck. Just need to do the leccy stuff and then the decks get be stuck on and the funs starts then!

Need to re sit that porthole lower now, probably will use some P39 filler.

The Next Thing I decided to tackle was done on Sunday am when I snuck out to the shed instead of laying Patio slabs, That lasted till 2 before the Fun Extractor called me for work duties.

Anyhow got the Leccy Tested and she Runs, Little glitch in that the Viper Speed Controller, the on/off switch would not budge and after some pressure just fell apart so I will get a more Sturdy one to use. I just twisted the wires together for now.

The Rudder, Fan Controller and Throttle work and uses a Snazzy Spectrum Receiver which now have no bind plugs Amazing Tech these days and no Aerial! I still am amazed about all this can be all set up in Seconds! I have made a little Tray attached to the side of the hull to hold the Controller, Fan Controller and receiver using a Action Power board. Not as technical as others have designed but it will suit myself, Keeping it simple.

I will use a connector then from the board to the Superstructure for the lights and hopefully will be able to use Magnets for the bits n bobs that will need to be removed in order to get to the Batteries to charge them

Forgot to add I was in the office last week and decided to print off some Telegraph faces, Barometer faces, clock Maps and a Piccy of the King for the Wheel House deck.

Of course I forgot Measure it so struck it lucky with the Sizes I choose.

I Stuck the Telegraph one on with PVA Card glue. Looks ok I think! Still drying in the pic.

Very nice build George ! Nice to see another rc boater here. In view of the model's weight you might need some kind of trolley to transport it from your car to the water. You might also need some kind of lifting device for launching it and getting it out of the water. Are you going to operate the model on a pond ?

Regards,

Arjan

Hi Arjan,

Yes this yoke is very heavy and the pond we use in Cork is not really easy to get too as the nearest road the council have turned it into a pedestrian walkway so we cant park at the closest spot, Then there were Steps down to the Pond! The other option will be to park and as you say Trolley this yoke down to were we launch from which is a pain as it is a long haul.

There are a nice bunch of guys and they can assist, I have to make some kind of Cradle to drop it in an out of the water but I plan to be moving this with as little Weight as possible.

These are my other 2 recent builds. Makes a change from the Plastic which I have about 200 unmade kits to get through but I feel the price of the plastic kits now I feel  gives less bang for the buck that the RC ships do.
