  • Homebee changed the title to 1/72 - Douglas DC-8/EC-24A by Mach2 - box art - release December 2020

Out of my range of my recent field of interest but I am impressed! With presence of Boeing 707 in 1/72 for years (Heller) there was a massive lack of his main competitor, the  DC 8.  There is  a nice range of boxes shown but still there is no 'Super DC-8 (series 61,63)" - so likely the place for aftermarket conversions.

Just to add on margin - some more that 50 years ago I had Plasticard DC-8 (ser, 30) in 1:100 (KLM livery)

Regards

J-W

It'll need resin wheels, engines without a doubt... but i'm not knocking Mach2, admire him for bringing us subjects no one else dares too.. really tempted by the Navy EC-24 or FAF Dc-8/50 Sarigue.

Unless they have DRAMATICALLY, and I do mean DRAMATICALLY, improved their clear parts, I will stay away.

... and manage to place the openings for the cabin windows in a straight line ... 😁

It is to be hoped that the Plastic within matches the lovely box covers.  If it does I'd be tempted having had my fingers cut in the past with Mach2 kits.  lets be  positive and hope for the best.😉

Not sure whether to laugh or cry at this news.  So torn!

i really agree on this.

Having seen the VC10's Nose, i am surprised it is possible to mismatch a shape so much, especially in this scale. Unless something changes significantly at Mach2, i expect a whole lot of wasted plastic. Its not so much the short run quality, but the severe issues with the shape. 🤦‍♂️

I respect those who urge the rest of us to be patient and see what bubbles forth.  Bubble may indeed be apropos.

I believe someone is/was producing a new cockpit clear part (with the roof molded as an integral whole) for the Aurora DC-9, since reissued.  Don't both aircraft have this structure in common?  That would help.  If the window line is crazy, then it's all about decals.  But if the wings, tail, and tail feathers are nuts, then...

The Transport Wings -50 kit comes with resin JT3D engine nacelles.  Do you suppose they'd sell them separately to correct Mach 2's offerings, assuming the engines are a mess?

The Mach 2 kits I have worked on have been OK for the large parts and poor on transparencies and small parts.

If someone is willing to make an upgrade set with cockpit transparencies and possibly undercarriage and engine parts, then I am in the maket for the SAS version and possibly for a later release of the longer DC8-63.

I am quite sure Transport Wings will be willing to sell resin engines, their website lists the DC-8 as a -53 or -63 depending on where I look on the page:

The Aircraft in Miniature / Transport Wings website also suggests they plan to release resin JT3, Conway and JT3D engines for their short fuselage kit:

Hopefully the Mach 2 kits will give them an incentive to do this - I fancy doing the Conway powered, early Canadian Pacific marked aircraft that broke the sound barrier.

I wanted to do the whole DC line in 1/72 up to 10, Of course the 10 is huge and may be the exception. I wish I would've got the AIM kit but it was to expensive at the time. With all the horror stories I hear of Mach 2s, I'm a bit cautious. It is possible to put lipstick on a pig though.

Almost too jazzed to speak, or uh, type.  I've a list of "must haves" for my collection of EW aircraft.  The top two DC-8 kits are on my list.  I'm truely looking forward to these two kits.  I know they are Mach 2 and I don't care.  It's better than scratch or vac!!! 😀

Could we get an extension to Douglas DC8-63?

No, sorry, Didier of Mach 2 explained to me that his injection moulding machines are not big enough to handle the long fuselage.

Hopefully Mr Gaunt will oblige us - after all, he did the same sort of thing for a Viscount 800 ...
