Um, er, well, I'm not sure. The paste is wax based and thins with white spirit so I guess, if it's applied thinly so it dries, that it might take paint…

Perhaps after a sealing varnish?

 

Like this one, W&N Satin thinned 50/50 with water as usual:

Interesting how much is in focus (or not).

In retrospect I wish I'd re-scribed the panel lines on the wings. Lesson learned.

 

Now I'd like to tone her down a bit so I'd appreciate some help.

W&N Gouache in the background. @giemme is that like your Tempura? Thinned black wash on the wheels? Or the Nulm Oil (right hand bottle).

@The Spadgent, our Flory wash expert, if I want a toned down effect - which one should I use?

Light, grime, dark dirt, black or, in the little bottle, my mix of light and dark, sort of grey?

 

Better let the varnish dry first…

While the varnish is drying I've started a WiP for my next build:

 

 

 

Another Helicopter. Should keep hendie happy!

More on the P1127 later, once the advice is in!

It's a thicker version of tempera, meaning that it covers more. On metal, a general wash with thinned black tempera works very well for me in toning down and giving depth.

If you want to tone it down a bit, might I suggest mixing in a slightly brownish grey into your varnish and then varnishing the whole lot? I used to do washes and wipe them off but it was all a bit hit and miss, so I use the varnish method now to get a more even, subtly variegated effect.

'Some' weathering.

Black pigment on the 'exhaust guards':

Now the nervous bit.

I tried thinned gouache on the 'paste mule' but it just pooled:

Just kidding - that's the wash on but, when it's dry, a lot of it will be wiped off again.

I've left out the squint bit, quite unnecessary to my mind. That is a stunning job Ced & catches the look of the real deal very nicely. :)

Ced. So sorry I only just saw that you asked me about the Flory. 🤭

She looks great regardless, The toned down frame looks spot on. 👌. Personally I do tend to use Black Flory on silver and NMF models. Most of it gets wiped away but what do stays I think always works better black. Just for the sake of it as you can’t pre shade. (And I do love a pre shade) I post shade silver stuff with light coats of tamiya smoke before the flory but each to their own.

Watching this one!  The first one of those I built was, get this, onboard an Air Canada DC8 flying from Heathrow to Toronto. I was 8 yrs old in '68. Can you imagine, sharp knife, tube glue fumes (mixing with other folks' cigarette smoke).

Looking forward to seeing more.
