Dansk
A lot of work since last time but not much to show for it. The whole airframe had a generous protective coating of humbrol gloss varnish. Following this i masked and airbrushed the darker metal panels surrounding the exhausts. Following this i noticed that i had completely forgotten to address the seams on the leading edge at the prep stage. Arrgghhh So i masked around the corresponding panels and sanded them back and used PPP to fill the gap and then reprimed / black based Finally coating them in aluminium zzzzz So now the seam is better.. not perfect but better. the tone needs to be addressed. I then masked up and painted the Olive Drab anti-glare panel So then we were here... (note that darker panel around the exhausts) Then using this shot as inspiration... ...I masked and sprayed white aluminium to a few panels to break up the solid metal coat. I will also darken certain panels in upcoming stages. Even with all the protective gloss coat it still doesnt like to be handled. This will need masking and painting again... Dansk
It’s so delicate even with the gloss coat, I’ve been handling it all with surgical gloves today scott @Jinxman A whole bunch of banana yellow going on today together with the black panels of this scheme’s livery on the lower rear of the port nose. The metallic flaps and ailerons that were slightly tarnished yesterday have been given a new coat of aluminium. The whole lot’s been given another generous protective coat of gloss varnish. Next up is: masking for the black bands on the wings and horizontal stabilizers, exhausts painting, and using stencils for the markings. I’ve never tried that before. Gulp. Patience with careful masking will get you through it. Ive always wanted to do a dual build of “Big, Beautiful, Doll” with both the Chequers and Yellow nose. That might be my next couple of Mustang builds thanks for the inspiration.
jackroadkill
I've just found this thread and read the whole thing carefully. This is a lovely job; the kit looks really nice, and the job you're doing of it is exceptional.
jean
Hi Paul, this is a really fantastic build! Fascinating, really. Have you found that the gloss varnish affects the NMF adversely? Great show!!! JR

Have you found that the gloss varnish affects the NMF adversely? Great show!!! JR Thanks @jean and thanks JR, Hey JR, the gloss doesnt to seam to affect the paint, and doesnt dull the coat either. I think its still rather fragile though so I have been super delicate with masking tape; pulling the stickiest incarnation off on my trouser leg first before applying the tape on the aircraft. Today has involved a lot of masking and was a veritable hive of activity on the P-51, Hive being particularly relevant as it looks like a bumble bee with its yellow theme and newly added black stripes here.. Then I started on the masking set. Gulp. First off the large codes... Masked and painted... And revealed... It worked so well. I was really thrilled. The identification numbering was offered as a decal or a stencil... hmmm... So having my newly found confidence with the masking situation i decided throw caution to the wind and proceed with the riskier stenciling route rather than the decal route... So heres that stage... Again I was over the moon with the result it looked so good. So I dived in and decided to stencil the stars and bars - heres that process and result... Not perfect by any means but I’m happy with the result. It really looks like a mustang now adourned with the stars and bars. Next up is the exhausts. I’ve primed then in rust primer tonight.... So a constructive day today. I’m really loving this build 🤗

Patience was the key thanks for the advice, I was thinking about it while I was doing it. Those mask sets work so well. I think embarking on a checquered option could be difficult theoretically but super rewarding to pull off. Dansk
Another productive day at the bench. We’re on the home straight now. Exhausts have been weathered and unmasked. Theres a touch of overpsray which I think I’ll opt to disguise with sooting around the exhaust area as opposed to repainting the yellow area. - Props have been delicately chipped and had small black bands added to the yellow safety markers on the tips to match the photo reference. Before... Masked... After... Chipped... - auxiliary tanks have been weathered (which was a mistake as I hadn’t decalled them yet 😣) - tail wheel attached - all decalling is now complete (well I am guilty of omitting a couple of stencils through tedium) Note the main gear is re-exposed again. I still need to add a strip to the ‘leg’ doors and add the main doors I’ve noticed there has been some adverse paint reactions, thankfully out of obvious direct sight but it’s here, the crazing. Which is a real pain. Otherwise all is good so far. Edited December 13, 2020 by Dansk
Grey Beema
Fantastic job Dansk, I am envious of your skills. One minor observation. In the pictures both ailerons appear to be down. They work on differentiation - one goes down one goes up. I hope this is just down to them not being fixed in place yet.

Thanks for the kind comment and Yes that's right they are just flopping around right now, of course they'll be asymmetrical, but thanks very much for pointing it out. They are pose-able, as are radiator exhaust duct, flaps, tailplane and rudder. Edited December 14, 2020 by Dansk
Dansk
Well a bit of a disastor has presented itself with further crazing and cracking primarily along the port side, the more interesting nose art side taking nearly all of it. So she’s had a panel line wash and exhaust staining today and i will finish the last parts and display the nicer side outwards when complete. Such a shame after all the hard work. Well thats the last bare metal finish for me for a long while. So to take her to the finishing line, I need stripes on the gear leg-doors, aerial, lights and lenses, gun barrel detailing, second tank fitted, prop mounted and I think that’s it so it should be possible in one session. Then i might matt coat it to give an oxidised metal feel perhaps. ailerons posed for you in these photos @Grey Beema 😉 Edited December 14, 2020 by Dansk 2

Corsairfoxfouruncle
Sorry to see the crazing happen, she still looks great though. Even in the close up photo’s I found it hard to spot so maybe its not as bad as you think ?

But the root where the rear of the wing meets the fuselage thats really quite a nasty bit. Edited December 15, 2020 by Dansk
