 Seriously, why is there a padlock?  The plane is in a hangar, in a fenced-in parking lot, with no stairs, what could threaten its interior?  Is there any ninja-fan 😁with parkour or Spiderman skills 😁 to get into the cockpit of this SR 53 and steal something? 

 

B.w. pay attention on instruments under the glass on the right side of the fuselage from below!

 

About the  that the concept of using S.R.53 is based on Me.163, I probably disagree, but I have my own GB topic with "casino, blackjack and ..." and a rocket fighter, 😁 there I can calmly state my arguments to no one here  annoying!

Unfortunately not, perhaps Eduard could bring out a p/e one. 😄  But it's only if your model is in in a museum diorama.

Why is it there? you know what these ninja fans are like, no instrument panels are safe, even in a hanger.

Concept, yes.  In 1952 the Air Ministry issued specification F.124T for a rocket powered fighter, use a ramp or very short take off, climb to 80,000 feet and intercept bombers , then glide back to earth.  Sound familiar?  Of course the problems that the Germans encountered with the Me.163 meant that it was not very practical so the SR.53 was more sophisticated with retractable u/c and a jet engine to bring it back to base, but no radar or guidance systems.  That led to the SR.177 but no one wanted to buy it, the RAF wanted the Lightning and the European Air Forces bought the F-104 Starfighter. :winkgrin:

Talking of museums, this Airfix kit should really be in one as well. It was issued a year after the real thing first flew in the Fifties:

Maybe it was there to stop the test-pilot getting out. :winkgrin: Don't forget that parachutes were not issued to pilots during WW1, just in case they were tempted to jump out. :)

Stop, it's was specification F.124T or requirements OR.301? 

I think the concept of the Me-163 was more in line with Shoth PD7 :

Those.  should this padlock be standard in the series?  Is this a kamikaze plane?  I told  - this is a different concept !!!

I bet you folk had thought I had forgotten all about this build, but having cleared most of the backlog for 2020, I have made a start on painting up the cockpit and nosewheel bay details.

One area of the kit that I want to try to improve are the airbrakes. I thought that I may see about adding the perforations in the panel and backing them with some plastic sheet. so I applied a piece of masking tape to the panels and did a rough layout of the perforation pattern. Now the more observant onlooker will have realised that the pattern shown is incorrect but it looks as though it will be possible to do what I am planning. Next job is to layout the correct pattern then drill/cut the holes and slots, the trick will be to come up with a suitable method for making both sides identical.

Tidy work there John. Wasn't going to be chasing up the backmarkers for a few days yet due to the festivities and year end project finishes but glad to see you making progress on this one :)

The parts count is quite low Graeme, but they do seem to have provided more cockpit detail.

Cheers Col, I have been tinkering around with the airbrake perforation layout this afternoon. I think that I have something that may be workable, the plan is to print them onto a sticky label then use that as a template, I may still have to adjust some of the hole sizes but it should be a good start. Another option would be not to overegg the pudding and simply print a decal.

Having checked a few measurements, I think that the best option for the airbrakes will be to print some decals, the reason being that the holes would drop in the exhaust outlets for both the jet engine and rocket, but I will try and play around with the shading of the shapes to see if it is possible to give more of a 3D effect. 

 

I finished the cockpit painting and assembly over the weekend and have pushed on with gluing the rest of the kit together, I think that I have sorted out the kits anhedral issue flagged up by @John_W earlier in the thread, and that meant that a bit more filler was needed around the upper wing/fuselage join. A little bit of trimming around the cockpit opening helped to improve the canopy fit.

I will mask off the canopy and nosewheel bay, plug the hole in the nose and tidy up some of the panel lines, then it should be ready for some primer.

Thanks Col. I took the decision to glue the nose pitot in place but cut the pitot section off which I will replace with something finer, and I also managed to get a couple of coats of primer on. That flagged up some areas that needed a bit more filler, the base of the fin being one of them, I hope that I can make a start on the topcoats at the weekend and in the meantime I can tidy up the undercarriage legs and doors etc.

Looking better with some primer on, period pictures of both SR.53 show them without the perforated air brakes, I'm trying to remember if they were trialed after the crash of XD 151. :hmmm:

Thanks Hewy. The model has gone together nicely. It's not a shake-n-bake kit but with some care makes up really well.

All the early images of both XD 151 and XD 145 show no perforations in the airbrake. I have come across an Air Britain photo showing the fuselage of XD 145 with perforated airbrakes, it was taken at the end of 1978 at Brize Norton having arrived on a trailer from Hendon for refurbishment, but sadly that doesn't help to date the modification.

Fog and a temperature hovering around 0oC meant that it wasn't great for spraying outdoors this morning. Things improved slightly early this afternoon, so with a brief spell of sunshine and a warmed can of Halfords Appliance White it was a quick dash outside to spray the first of two light coats, with the second applied about 30 mins later. I'll leave that to harden off for a few days before I continue with the painting of the anti glare panel and engine exhausts.

I have found that by standing the can in a little warm water (not hot) for a short while before shaking it helps, Col. I have also been using one of these when using a rattle can, which gives a bit more control with spraying. I have to remind myself to keep my hand away from the trigger when putting it on and taking it off though.
