Fairey Fulmar MkIi BF782 of 806 NAS from HMS Formidable during Operation Ironclad, the invasion of Madagascar in August 1942. The Fulmar shot down more enemy aircraft than any other FAA aircraft during WW2 and was a very successful interceptor in the Med campaigns and convoys.

Airfix (Smer) 1:72 kit, finished OOB except for seat belts, brush painted with Xtracrylix Extra Dark Sea Grey/Dark Slate Grey over Sky finished with Liquitex matt varnish. Transfers from the DP Casper Ironclad sheet.

Thenks to the extension I was able to finish a project for a GB since... Nordic 1 I believe.

It was slightlyrushed in theend, but there is no subsitute for last minute panic, asfar as work motivation is concernedi guess.

On the bright side I managed to finish one of the Tonkas fromtheTornado STGB aswell, so that is a bonus. You are herefor thepictures tough so enjoy:

Kit: F-101B by Revell (1:72)

Hawker Nimrod MkII K4620 of 801 NAS based on HMS Furious. CMR resin kit in 1:72, completely OOB. Brush painted with Revell Aluminium for the fabric surfaces and Xtracrylix Camouflage (Barley) Grey for the Cerrux Grey painted metal panels. Lovely little kit and a very neat little aircraft.

A pair of Supermarine Seafires MkIb's. Both Admiral 1:72 kits finished OOB except for seat belts from Eduard. Both brush painted with Xtracrylix Extra Dark Sea Grey/Dark Slate Grey over Sky and matt finished with Liquitex varnish. They are MB345 of 885 NAS on HMS Formidable in 1943 and PA103 of 736 NAS based at St Merryn also in 1943.

Phew, thank you Enzo for the extension.  Even then I couldn't quite get to 100% done (Nose Gear doors and seats still need to go on but hey, we're all friends round here! The canopy will be posed open once the seats are in)

So as Meatloaf's first draft of his hit song that didn't quite have the right ring to it, "One Out of Three Ain't Bad", I present for your delectation and general merriment, the Red Zebra made from the 1/48 Airfix Tornado F3 box of Tornadoey looking plastic bits.  It's not my best work by far; in the WIP I had two other Tornados on the go from Italeri and Revell, and hopefully although they won't pass the finish line tonight should be far more respectable models!

Now Red Zebra as it was a display aircraft, always looked close to spotless in every picture I could find of it, so weathering was deliberately kept to a minimum.

Hasegawa 1/72 Kyushu J7W1 "Shinden". A nice kit, apart from the narrow canopy. One of these days, I will complete a kit without having to switch to a new tin of of one of the main camouflage colours. Camera conditions marginal, as is usual for kits completed just before the gallery deadline. Build thread here:

Here is my USS Long Beach CGN-9 in 1/700.

Though a ship, this thing was a pure interceptor - its purpose was to shoot down Soviet bombers on their way to try to nuke a US fleet. Built in 1961, it was all-missile armed until reportedly President Kennedy made an inspection visit and suggested it should have at least something to deal with small surface threats. They added the two guns amidships after that.

But the heart of this ship was just like a fighter interceptor - powerful radar and lots of missiles.

The billboards on the main superstructure were a highly complex (for the time) radar array. Up front it had two twin launchers for the Terrier SAM system, and at the rear another twin launcher for the Talos system. It carried 120 Terrier and 52 Talos, as well having an ASROC launcher (the box unit behind the main superstructure) for attacking submarines. Terrier had a range of up to 74km, while Talos could reach out to over 100km. Both missiles could carry nuclear warheads too.

USS Long Beach was the first ship to use SAMs to down an enemy aircraft - it fired a Talos in May 1968 near Viet Nam and shot down a MiG-17 at 65 miles range. Later that year it hit another MiG at 61 miles.

IMG_20210315_104557592.jpg

(Talos launching)

So I figured this squarely belonged in the interceptor GB - designed to bring down enemy planes far from the protected target area (in this case its fleet) and with a combat record.

Also it's just a super-cool ship - nuclear powered, incredibly modern looking (even, I'd argue, by today's standards although it must be the least stealthy ship on earth with those radar arrays), heavily armed with high tech for its time. Think about this coming into service with the USS Enterprise and nuclear subs around the time of the Space Race and in the height of the Cold War...

Anyway enough jibber-jabber. Hope you like it.

And the build thread:

Thanks for looking!
