Yet another Delta from the late 1950's to early 1960's. The F-106 was a somewhat redesigned version of the F-102A, being longer, slimmer and with a more pronounced "Area Ruled" fuselage, and a more powerful engine. Entering service as the Delta Dart in late 1959, the F-15 began to replace it in 1981 with the Darts being passed on to the ANG. It was finally retired in 1988 though some were converted to drones.

This is the old Hasegawa kit which dates back to around 1969, and unlike their F-102 Delta Dagger kit of the same period it has not had any upgrades other than replacing the outer wing fence with a slot at some point, so I have added a warning beacon, in flight refuelling probe receptacle, data link aerials and another aerial under the nose. I was fortunate enough to have managed to get an Aeroclub replacement closed missile bay doors moulding, which made it a lot easier to build, and I have fitted a Master replacement nose probe. Otherwise it is OOB including the decals for the 101st FIS Massachusetts ANG who were the last users.

And here it is alongside a Delta Dagger for comparison.

Not a bad kit, though the missile bay and missiles are apparently not very accurate, and trying to model it with closed doors would have required a lot of filling and sanding if I had been forced to use the kit parts. The Meng kit is supposedly better, as it should be given it costs about 3 times as much, and is a far more recent moulding, though I have heard that it also has some problems.

I have enjoyed this build - suppose I had now better get on with the next 3!

1/72 Focke Wulf FW190D-9 from Hasegawa. The decals are from an Altmark set as the originals were ruined by the postman leaving the parcel in the garden waste bin :/. It was airbrush painted with Vallejo Model Air

I chose the scheme to really push my skills at painting and masking.

Entering service in 1956 the Douglas F-4D was intended as a fast climbing defender for the US Navy.  With a maximum speed of 722mph I guess it would be called transonic, and although the climb rate was good it suffered from short range. Like other armed forces, the USN wanted an interceptor to counter the threat of hostile nuclear armed bombers, but by the 1960's began to move away from single purpose planes so the Skyray did not last long, being withdrawn by 1963. This is the Tamiya kit and is in the colourful markings used by VF(AW)3 when they were seconded to NORAD to defend the US homeland.

I have touched up the nose of the port drop tank after seeing these photos!

It went together well as you would expect from Tamiya and the only problem was with the decs, but @Vultures1 kindly sent me his spares,

I am enjoying this GB, and hope to finish a few more yet.

Here's my Czech Master Resin 1/72nd scale Sopwith Dolphin...part of my '19 Squadron Long Build' I will be doing all year.  It began with the commemorative Spitfire/Hawk in the Hawk GB.  Here is my next one, circa 1918.  The Dolphin was abandoned as an aircraft after the war so it had a very short career.  19 Squadron moved to the Snipe next.  I was happy to finish this build.  It wasn't difficult but towards the end I began to lose steam.  I think my next for this GB will be a 109...

RNAS Sopwith Baby (Zeppelin interceptor)

1/200 Langton Miniatures white metal kit

Made mostly OOB, but I've added my own Le Prieur rockets and some token rigging.

The build thread is here, if you would like to see more.

This is my take on the old Airfix Mig-21F-13 kit. I have been told it is not very accurate though I have made some improvements, adding a new nose ring, resin seat and wheels, and fabricating a jetpipe.

DSC04458-crop DSC04460-crop DSC04462-crop

It was built to the same specification that produced the Su-9 but as you can see they are somewhat different in approach.

DSC04455-crop

I was going to use the Soviet markings until I discovered they were out of register, so it ended up as a machine supplied to the Czech's - not sure if have got the markings on the right way round. The F-13 was the first true all weather interceptor version but the Mig-21 went on to be built in many different versions, some of which were meant for ground attack. I believe it is the most produced jet aircraft ever, and by a considerable margin.

My last for the GB for a spell...I have other things to do, other GB in which to lurk about...

Italeri's 109G-6, á la Finland, 1948...pretty much OOB except for a couple of bits from the AZ spares box and a bit of brass wore for the radio ring.  EZ line for the radio wire...the WiP is here...I followed the directions for the night fighter/bat logo...not sure if they are backwards.  Too late now!

Another group build completed and I have enjoyed this one a lot. I have built the Hasegawa Hi-Grade Series F-15A Eagle with ASAT Missile. I didn't add much beyond an Aires resin seat, Eduard etch and some metal AOA probes. Decals came from Two Bobs and the rest from the box.

This is my Supermarine 224 in 1/72nd from the old Rareplanes vacformed kit. Built  in response to Spec F.7/30 for a four gun day and night interceptor  with a top speed of not less than 250 mph, the 224 first flew in February 1934. The aircraft failed to meet the specified speed and the steam cooled Goshawk engine was basically a bad idea for a fighter aircraft and had reliability issues. Even at the time of its first flight R.J. Mitchell was refining the design by adding a retractable undercarriage and an enclosed canopy and changing the wing. Further refinement saw a new tailplane and a new wing and then a change to the  Rolls-Royce PV 12 engine and  final change to a semi-elliptical wing. This new design, as the Supermarine Type 300 first flew in March 1936, 25 months and a world away from the 224.
