Sparviero Siluranti di Panterellia - Italeri S.79

Recommended Posts

An MTO GB without a Savoia-Marchetti 79?

Don't think so!

We must give all those Spits and P-40s something to shoot at, right?

Anyways: had my eye on this one for a while and this GB fits nicely.

Got some extras for it:

I predict some cutting and splicing is going to take place...

As the title says, this one will be the Panterellia based 278 Squadriglia one:

Here's the original, seen on Panterellia.
The fortress like structure was built against one of the hill slopes on the airfield.

The Island of Panterellia lies north-west of Malta, halfway between Sicily and Tunisia.
The airfield still exists, now a regional airport.

And then I took to Google Streetview trying to match the picture, and ran into this:

Will start later this week on the kit.

You're absolutely right, we couldn't have an MTO GB without one could we, well done for stepping up and building one.👍

I have one of the Italeri kits in the stash too so I'm really interested to see how you get on with this one. Looks like you have a good selection of goodies to go with the kit too.

Interesting that the Italians kept the fasces on the entrance to what was the airfield, you would have thought that they would have been removed after the war.

I'll be watching this one. I've got all 3 Italeri SM.79 kits plus one Eduard PE set and one set of Quickboost resin engine cowlings.

Modeling ability mostly. Plus time. I haven't touched my Hurc in about 3 week. It seems that just when the mojo comes back, someone needs me to do something else. As it's snowing up here today, I shall soon have to go out and shovel the sidewalk. Why the heck did I buy a house on a corner! I have at least twice as much as everybody else.

Did I mention that I'm a bit timid about the whole painting thing. That's where I usually mess up a kit, so I need to work myself up to it.

  • 3 weeks later...

cutting, sawing, folding and sticking started today:

Only 90% of the PE set to go: :drunk:

But hey, it's a start :P

Anyways - while doing the research, I found out that in many cases the Torpedo groups had the bomb racks removed and an extra fuel tank added in place to extend the range.

So  that would take care of several flimsybendy bits here, instead.

Now to find out if the front-firing MG is there or not.

All the windows added with a tip of TET - and without fogging.
Masked on the inside, then added the fiddly bits, followed by a spritz of interior grey.

Without the inside masks:

I've opted to forego the bomb rack and use parts to construct the extra fuel tank/bladder - that's the square bit on the cocktail stick.

Now, the puzzle is how to add the construction on the floor for that and keep the complicated top bit to go on top :)

Well, I don't know if this one will make the finish line in time, but I'll give it my best shot.

At least some of the interior is visible with the open door.

y4mSGmwXfj_SQT6dYWT9S0Ar3FMt2lv-YntuYlaq

There's also the bombardiers panel just to the left, although that is not in the pic.

It's a good thing I plan to have the top hatch open, the fit isn't perfect:

y4mF93Atyx4N7c0P7ePHABTjqY04VrYIxsZSqv2N

(glued on with PVA).

Not glued on with PVA, the front glazing. It was so tight, it doesn't need it :D

y4mDCfeH_kAuAc82oWXd1tjfPJO49iy30Ai5R2Au

Next will be masking the windows and going forward with wing joining.

In the meantime, the cowlings were sprayed white, then in gloss cream yellow (mr.Color H-34).

Taped off and masked the exhaust collector rings.
y4m17gNpLjav7zgAGNpWunqfDjm9osr2B2sbEth5

The front ring I'll handle with a silver pen.

Exhausts:

y4m4drdZwoFbgW7M3pT7Ir64o8-Zih7TycxBLtiH

Started off with a base layer of Engine grey, followed by a thin mist of copper, then a thin layer of steel and finally a thinned mist of umber (which matts the shine down).
