Corsairfoxfouruncle
Anyone know what this is ? Landing gear reminds me of Thunderbolt, but the rest makes me think Curtiss ? The photo us one of many in a Late uncles collection of personal photo’s from WW2 thru the late 1970’s. Dennis
Graham Boak
I think it is one of the varied Curtiss P-60 prototypes. Start looking there, anyway.
Jure Miljevic
I think there is low-back visible, so that would be Curtiss YP-60 E (43-32763), I believe. Cheers Jure 2

Magpie22
The YP-60E in that pic appears to have heavily clipped wings and the background appears to be a civilian location. Could I take it a stage further and suggest that the A/C in the photo is Jim De Santo's P-60E in the process of being modified? De Santo took it to the 1947 air races. Shot below shows it after modification, but before the air races. It had a new colour scheme by then. Of interest is the way the clipping of the wings has resulted in a truncated registration. There is a comprehensive article on this A/C in Wings Magazine of June 1985. Peter Malone
Corsairfoxfouruncle
I know the photo was taken in Florida or New York my uncle was stationed and learned to fly in Florida so more likely there. Does that help narrow that down ? Edited October 29, 2020 by Corsairfoxfouruncle
Magpie22
According to the Wings article, (June 1986 not '85 as I wrote above), in December 1946, De Santo flew the A/C from Jackson, Michigan to Gainsville, Florida, where it was modified. Was your uncle doing his training in Florida in the first half of 1947? DeSanto then took the A/C to Cleveland in August, but the tail came off in a high speed run. His paratropper training came to his aid in his successful bail out at low level. That was the end of the YP-60E. Peter PS. This photo in the Wings article shows the A/C in front of, what appears to be, the same hangar in your shot. 72modeler
Late to the party, as usual! Yes, the photo Dennis posted was the YP-60E, s/n 43-32763, and as Peter posted was purchased surplus by Jim DeSanto. Anigrand did a resin kit of the XP-60C/E razorback version, kit 2064, which could be converted to the YP-60E with the bubble canopy, and four-bladed prop, which was much more handsome than the XP's, in my opinion. I have boat loads of photo’s from his USN years, mostly on the U.S.S.Sitkoh Bay CVE-86 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Sitkoh_Bay I have some but not many on LSMR 521 Rainey River https://www.navsource.org/archives/10/06/06521.htm Dennis
