Hello everybody... Im in with an extreme rarity and oddity this time. This is my first attempt at a ship build since 1993. I will be building IBG’s excellent 1/700 scale kit.

This ship has a personal connection to me as an Uncle of mine served on her during the war. Edwin Wojtas was 16 years old in 1940 when he crossed into Canada illegally and joined the Polish Navy in Exile. The Polish navy operated as part of the Royal Navy during the war. After his training he was assigned as a Fire control-man on board the Kujawiak. He sailed on multiple convoys as escort, he went to the USSR many times, Egypt, across the Atlantic, and on his final escort to Malta in June 1942. The Kujawiak was sunk in June of 1942 on her way to Malta. He survived and was transferred to the U.S.Navy in 1943. I will add more as I go through his photo’s but here are two. 7wzZIxb.jpg

I will also try yo add some of his orders that I still have. Does anyone know how to add a watermark to photo’s so they cant be copied and used by others ? Id like to share but some of them may be one off’s and Id like to retain ownership.

Nice addition Dennis, hopefully your boat building skills from the 90’s haven’t Deserted you.

Thanks but they werent good then, I never did finish the Prinz Eugen I promised my brother. So someday as penance I will build one now that he’s gone.

I think one of our fellow group builders inserts a plastic dinosaur or whatever it is to "watermark" the pictures.

What kind of software are you using for Image viewing?

If you are not set yet, I suggest a really powerfull package called Xn View, wich allows you to view and manipulate pictures - such as adding watermarks.

Unfortunately my only computer is my Cellular phone (iPhone 10 in this case). I was hoping there would be a way to do it with the edit feature’s in the phones camera software. I was thinking of using it to draw a symbol or add my name which should be possible ?

Interesting if its that simple should be able to do something similar.

Thank you both for taking the time to answer and the good ideas.

Well, there appear to be a choice of watermark apps for the Iphone (just search the web or better the app store for "watermark iphone photos"), some of them apparently even free. However I am not in the position to give recommendations as I don't use an Iphone.

Hello Everyone... Here are the obligatory sprue shots. lNC9GND.jpg

As you can see the sprues of which there aren't many, are all still in the bag. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, or add thoughts. I will add a few photo’s from my Uncle’s collection, I believe this aircraft carrier to be in Malta ? If anyone knows better please let me know. V8pAEQb.jpg

XELzixG.jpg

It looks damaged/burned out which is a clue. Here is an escort carrier the H.M.S. Argus in Scotland. vg3aXCl.jpg

Next we have hull number X82, not sure what class or type ? DGCAlGP.jpg

So doing a bit of digging ? Could it be

X82 CASSARD, a Free french DD ? I found a single listing in the link with X82 ?

https://wetherhorn.wordpress.com/home/about/my-models/french-navy-wwii-models/

And finally O.R.P. Kujawiak tied alongside a sister ship L115 O.R.P.Krakowiak again Im not sure where ?

I believe this last one is H.M.S. Eskimo, at least that is what was written on the back. O9hJoT7.jpg

Last up is a photo of his paperwork in both Polish and English, I was incorrect he enlisted in 1941.

Great to have a family connection with a build Dennis, this should be good!

Interesting that they called your Uncle an 'Active Soldier up until September 8th 1942'. I wonder if that's a quirk of the Polish Navy?

I think (big think here) that the first two pictures of the fleet carrier are of HMS Ark Royal, possibly in Gibraltar. She was sunk in November 1941 and if your Uncle joined up in September then these could be just before she was sunk?

Can't help with the X82, (possibly its K82?) but L115 was another Polish Hunt class, ORP Krakowiak.

The last picture is of a Town class Cruiser, just like HMS Belfast, couldn't say which one though. I wonder why Eskimo is on the back? As a Tribal destroyer the two ships are very different to look at.

The kits a fun build, bit fiddly, but all of them are in 1/700! Good luck!

My earlier posting seems to have gone missing.  The carrier is possibly HMS Illustrious.  Likeliest candidate, anyway.

The X82 doesn't look British, and the style of the code certainly isn't.  French or Italian?

The cruiser is HMS Birmingham, the only Town without a knuckle bow.

EDIT To avoid misleading more people, thanks to postings below the carrier is not Illustrious (likely for Malta maybe but this isn't Malta), and the cruiser is not a Town because it has upright funnels, which I should have known!

Well I kept digging and solved the mystery, X82 is the French Destroyer “Le Malin”

Happy Hallows Eve everyone... well Sorry for the delayed start on this. I haven't bern feeling good for a few days. Combination of diabetes and migraines. I got a decent start on this though. First was to go through my paints and match samples that @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies had given me a little while ago. Id love to use color-coats but going to have to use what I have due to some serious $ budget problems right now. I started in the middle stages by building up the deck and adding that to the one piece hull. I did have to guess at the deck color so if its incorrect please let me know anyone ?
PZDXvGL.jpg

Probably the greatest invention in years for modeling. Thats why I never finished my brothers “Prinz Eugen” I could never get the three piece hull to look right. From there I painted the deck and added the lower super structure bits. When I got to the central octagon piece that calls for the use of plastic supports at the rear. EwWS3cQ.jpg
I felt they were too thick so replaced them with brass. 92hrHPw.jpg

And then I finished with the rest. UPhSdU1.jpg

Ok after voting in the great bunfight today I came back to working on this. I was able to add the three turrets, albeit after searching and fighting the carpet monster for 30 minutes. Rest assured I did deprive him of his midnight snack. Again the plastic barrels for the three turrets were too fat, so I replaced them with brass. s9raXgf.jpg

I then proceeded to building up the bridge superstructure. 8wnY5vH.jpg

Sorry, I'm agreeing with @Bugle07, I reckon it is the Ark, the knuckles above the bow for the catapults (?) are a giveaway on her to my mind & the general arrangement appears to agree closely with this photo.

The ORP Kujawiak it coming along nicely Dennis.

Steve.

Gidday, can I add my two bits' worth? I agree with Steve above, the heavy AA guns look like the mountings on the Ark, not the BD mounts on Lusty. And the cruiser I believe is a Colony (Fiji) class. Although the knuckle is not evident in this photo (and Graham is correct about HMS Birmingham being the only 'Town' without one) there are other differences between the two classes of cruiser. I thought Dickrd established her as HMS Kenya in another thread.

And Dennis, the Hunt class you're doing is a neat build. You're inspiring me to have a go at one. I have one (maybe two) in the stash, and one of them may jump the build queue. I've always been fond of HMS Ledbury, the 'Pedestal' convoy. I think she was a Hunt type II also. I'm looking forward to seeing this develop. Regards, Jeff.

Morning everybody... Ive added the colors tonight. Im trying to wrap my head around the micro photo etch. I may not be able to do a lot of it. Mostly aiming for railings, and a few other key pieces. Some of the really tiny fittings are just going to be there in imagination. w9EMpVt.jpg

Good morning everyone.. well other than the etch, decals, and small boats this is done. Ive painted the etch and clear coated it in preparation for mounting. Once done its decals and then satin coat. il04QCf.jpg

Good morning everybody... Hoping everyone is safe out there. I did a lot of work tonight, I finished all the etch on this. I need to touch up the paint next, three decals and flat coat. zeJcPmM.jpg

Ive got to admit this was an interesting build fun even but I did learn one thing. 1/700 is just to dang small for my gorilla hands. The etch was almost a give up as its so tiny. So in the future I will need to move to larger scales for maritime. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, or add thoughts.

Hi Dennis and what a great little build :goodjob:

Having just Googled "Kujawiak" and "Krakowiak", would it be right to say that in Polish service these destroyers were "Dance" Class?  No pun intended.

Cheers.

Interesting I read your post and then looked it up. I just learned that myself, I had always assumed that at least Krakowiak was related to the City ?
