theplasticsurgeon
Boosting the Carrier Air Wing with this Sword 1/72 TF-9J Cougar. Performing as a USMC Forward Air Controller. Parts. This is the Vietnam option.
trickyrich
...and part 2 of the second tour, I like this one very much! An interesting aircraft that many probably didn't realise was used during the war. As a FAC she had a very important role in the Marines strike packages. Looks to be a straightforward build, hopefully there aren't any fit issues. Good luck with this build as well.
modelling minion
Great to see you bring a Twogar to the GB Tim. As Rich says it's an aircraft that many will not even know took part in Vietnam but it performed the FAC role from Chu Lai for a couple of years. Also great that she is sporting a sharkmouth! reini
Nice! That's a kit I hope I will cross paths with someday. But for now I will follow your thread with interest
theplasticsurgeon
Approaching this build with caution. My first Sword kit, a Seastar was a bit of a handful. My next, a Grumman Avenger - slightly less challenging. Both very rewarding though. And I've competed two Hasegawa single-seat Cougars, First this blue fleet example. And a white hi-viz training example. Time for a Grey/White one.
theplasticsurgeon
Here, both options for this kit. Resin seats, from which i've removed the casting blocks. These represent the Martin Baker seats, used for the end of the Cougar's service.
trickyrich
gosh those other 2 models were gorgeous!! Am looking forward to seeing what you do with this one!
modelling minion
Good start on the seats Tim.👍
theplasticsurgeon
Cockpit and other subassemblies This kit uses tabs to assist with fitting the wings, I used bits of an old hotel key-card. And added some nose-ballast, just in case. Fuselage assembled, getting ready for the wings.
modelling minion
Great progress Tim, you are going great guns on this one and making a very good job of it too.
Ghostbase
Interesting choice of subject, I had forgotten that the TF-9J Cougar was used during the Vietnam War. Just took a look in the stash and found the 1/48th scale Kitty Hawk offering... in exactly the same markings 🙃 Michael 1
theplasticsurgeon
The fit of parts isn't great, hence filler on the joints. but wings are fitted. I'm suspicious that masting marks in the cockpit floor, will raise the seats, and interfere with the cockpit fit. but I'm leave that until tomorrow now.
modelling minion
For a limited run kit Tim she isn't going together badly at all. You have already got her to the Cougar shape very quickly.
theplasticsurgeon
Seats fitted, with scratched handle. Then canopy dryfitted. The inner frame is black insulation tape.
trickyrich
yeap, limited run kits are always fun to build/re-construct! You're doing a great job with this one, nice to see the Bang seats fitted. The 2 seater wasn't the prettiest of aircraft, the single seater looked much nicer. modelling minion
You got a good fit with the canopy Tim, never the easiest of tasks.
theplasticsurgeon
Airbrushed with Revell04 White. Looking at photos of this actual aircraft, the flaps are lighter than the wings - unlike on the structions.
modelling minion
That's a looking coat of white Tim. I agree that the top surfaces of the flaps should also be white, just like on other US Navy aircraft.
theplasticsurgeon
Some progress today. Masked up ready for airbrushing Humbrol 140, grey. And demasked. Happy with that.
modelling minion
Nice progress Tim, good to see that the masking worked.
theplasticsurgeon
Start of decals, these are very fragile. Hence I've lost the unit H&MS-13 on this side. That MARINES decal had to be replaced with a leftover from my Seastar.
modelling minion
Sorry to hear about your decal issues Tim, something that seems to be plaguing quite a few of the builds in this GB. The ones which have gone on do look very nice though.
theplasticsurgeon
Masked and painted the black bits, before I can complete the decals.

theplasticsurgeon
More decals, including the walkways, and jet warnings. I've had to change technique as these decals are so fragile. Wet the paper, then remove it from the water. Leaving the decal to separate from paper whilst still in the water risks it folding up. . . . . .as happened to th YU Stbd side. Now replaced with spares.
