Trumpeter 1/72 Su-27 early type ── Barents Sea Scalpel

On the September 13, 1987,  the soviet Su-27's vertical tail cut one engine of norwegian P-3C while intercepting over the Barents Sea. We can't insure the incident was a "brave pilot with superb skill" or "flight accident caused by pilot negligence". From my point of view, this is a fascinating topic to present.

We can find two version of this incident: damage on the left or right vertical fin. After comparing the details of two side, I prefer the latter one.

These pictures were released by norwegian military which shooted by P-3C, notice the R-27T fins were in different color

Superb Flanker! I remember this incident well as it happened on my birthday!

A long time ago now, but I do recall purchasing the original ACE kit or possibly the Tsukuda kit shortly after the event. From memory that kit was not great, but I guess for the time it was not bad.

Very nice Su-27, the blues you have used look spot on, That's a very interesting background story which provided you with the inspiration for the build. Well done for doing something unique. I think they were all very lucky to get away with that!

Cheers

What a coincidence! How did you feel about this incident during the crazy cold war time?

A coincidence I guess, that it was my birthday, but here is the other spooky part. That year I was 33, and now that incident was 33 years ago, because this year I was 66! It's hard for me to believe that was half my lifetime ago.

Yes the Cold War was a crazy time. Four years earlier, a Korean Airline 747 was shot down by an SU-15. At the time for me it was difficult to imagine that the Cold War would ever end, yet now it seems so long ago.

Perhaps it's time for me to build another Flanker, but I have too many other projects to do yet!

Great build and great subject! It would seem that the Su 27 pilot had seen Top Gun (1986) and was allegedly "communicating in Maverick style" with the Norwegian crew before the collision. He probably didn't realize that the movie scene was created in the safe environment of an editing studio!
