Thanks Daryl!

Funny thing is, the Corsair is my favourite prop plane. I've built two of the Tamiya kits of that one and have a few more to get to. The Spitfire has turned into my "recharge the batteries" build. I know where I need to watch out and what to use AM for and can plug away at it without worry.

Carl

Can't beat a relaxing build, before moving into armour I collected the Tamiya range of 1/32, except the Zero, will get around to them some day, even the Mosquito!

I'm afraid when it comes to the Panther tyres I  cheat and just brush paint either tamiya or vallejo rubber once the wheel is painted.

I've been reading through many of the other builds on here and it's been a great time.  Lots of info and techniques to learn.

Back to my build, I got the rims painted.

At this point you'll notice the one in the bottom right is different. Well, I lost one to the carpet monster. Takom gives you some spares that are ostensibly to be mounted on the hull. I used on of those instead.

Thankfully it's one of the inner wheels so the gap around the hub won't be too noticed.

You lost a wheel! I'll repeat a wheel, to the carpet monster!

Just how deep is the carpet pile??

:surprised:

Stef, I use a circle template from Hasegawa to mask the wheel off. I paint the rubber rims first then hold them behind the template and spray the wheel colour. The template is made from a thicker sheet if stainless so holds up well and is easy to clean off when needed. The circle diameters on it increase by 0.5mm so easy enough to find the correct size.

I have a cheap plastic one I picked up in a newsagents. It works fine but is slightly out for most wheels I paint. Something more accurate like that one would be ideal and is going on my shopping list. Cheers.

Bare concrete actually. Which made it all the more mystifying. Not sure if it rolled away or what. Swept up all around and came up with just dust bunnies.

I got the rear hull installed. I wasn't sure if I had it aligned properly as I had some issues later on.

PXL_20201025_014038465-600x450.jpg

The drive cover, drive sprockets and idlers are together.

PXL_20201025_014054422-600x450.jpg

On the upper hull, there's an inner plate to the front that I installed.

PXL_20201025_015115964-600x450.jpg

There's a couple tabs along the front edge to help align it with the lower hull. I found the were pushing the two sections sort so I sanded them off.

PXL_20201025_015816472-600x450.jpg

This made the fit much better. I think this may have been more of an operator error as I haven't heard of anyone else encountering this issue.

I still needed to use tape to hold the upper and lower hulls together for a nice join.

PXL_20201025_022133776-600x450.jpg

It worked out though.

PXL_20201025_191131189-600x450.jpg

Almost no gaps, just a very small one on the front.

Well, I made it through Halloween and got distracted with a Silver Wings Hart but I finally made some progress on the Jagdpanther.

I tend to paint as I build so I got some paint onto the now dry hull assembly.

PXL_20201026_012140734-600x450.jpg

Then I turned my attention to the engine deck.

PXL_20201103_031837668-600x450.jpg

Having installed the engine bay bulkheads earlier made the grilles and engine plate much more secure. I'm glad I did it that way.

I also started on the tracks. I forgot to grab a pic with them on the templates that Takom includes.

PXL_20201102_215128774-600x450.jpg

I ended up knocking a few of the rack teeth off and had to glue them back on. Otherwise it went fairly smoothly.

Now to finish installing the road wheels and the lower run of tracks. Then onto the other side.

That's looking good, are you gluing all the running gear together and be able to slide it off the axles for painting?  I've done that on my two builds and its working well, painting is still ongoing but no problems so far.

Actually it's all glued in place already. I tend to paint in subassemblies and then if needed do touch ups after assembly.

In fact, I just finished the second track run and it's installed in place.

Time for a long past due update. I assembled the gun breech and barrel, leaving the barrel free so I could install the breech into the hull.

PXL_20201108_005033489-600x450.jpg

The breech went in without any issues.

PXL_20201114_014305488-600x450.jpg

I started painting the tools and what have you that go on the hull.

PXL_20201113_004638926-600x450.jpg

These and the gun cleaning rod case were then glued to the hull.

PXL_20201114_035517662-600x450.jpg

The jacking block was next.

I was a bit undecided on whether to mount the periscopes or not seeing that the tank would be loaded on a railcar. In the end I decided to put them in place.

PXL_20201115_031346737-600x450.jpg

I also painted the one piece barrel as a last minute thing.

The 'scopes were installed into the roof and the roof onto the hull.

PXL_20201115_031551685-600x450.jpg

At this point all the major assemblies are done. I then had to decide on the final paint job.

I built a Meng Jagdpanther last year and didn't want this one to end up too similar it it.

PXL_20201115_035125183-600x450.jpg

So if I used the two piece barrel, I was going to have to add a bit of camouflage to it which would have brought it closer to the other.

If I used the early barrel painted in the grey, I could leave the hull in the monotone dunkelgelb.

PXL_20201115_035202994-600x450.jpg

In the end, I decided on the latter. Part of it was a bit of laziness as this way, the painting's done. The other is the that it maximizes the contrast between the two.

I finally got a bit of time and finished off the Jagdpanther. I made the spare tracks up.

PXL_20201115_163636604-600x450.jpg

Takom includes the pins that keeps the spare tracks in place on their racks.

PXL_20201115_210146107-600x450.jpg

I managed to not lose any but did snap a couple installing the tracks so I left off one pair. Otherwise they worked out ok.

PXL_20201121_044340758-600x450.jpg

At this point, I attached the Jagdpanther to the railcar using the towing cables. I initially used the build on the The Modelling News website as reference for this but didn't like the way the tank sat so far back.

PXL_20201116_215053270-600x450.jpg

I looked around and found a pic online of a Panther on a railcar where they had wrapped the tow cable around the bumpers so that's what I did. It gave me the better positioning of the tank I felt.

Finally I added the skirt armour. I used ones leftover from a Dragon Panther kit as they were individual plates and made from aluminum so I could dent them a bit.

With those on, the build was complete.

I still need to add some chocks to it before it's fully done but the Jagdpanther itself is finished. I'm off to the LHS tomorrow to find some suitable wood stock for that.

Looking superb Carl, I went to the Driffield model show in September 19 and a modeller had built a huge display with all his AFV's on rail flatbeds, with flak carriages, steam engines and figures it was most impressive, am I giving you ideas? :wicked:

Like the BR52, Karl Morser (with Gondala's), Flat bed, (and a few others I've not collected yet) in my stash.

Would make a crazy Group Build Though,

Could you imagine turning up somewhere with a massive train of german armour heading to the front🤪

That's a really clever display idea, look tremendous, like it a lot. Nice modelling all round mate. Nice clean build, and I have to say that Zim' is really nice they created. Looks the part very realistic

10 out of 10......

Simon.

  • FG2Si changed the title to Takom Jagdpanther G1- finished

Well, I finally got a piece of wood for the base.

I gave it a quick varnish and then glued the rail tracks to it.

PXL_20201203_212023144-600x450.jpg

I then used Woodland Scenics gravel as a bed. I put down a thin layer of PVA glue down between the ties, poured the gravel and then dripped watered down PVA glue over top to saturate the gravel.

PXL_20201203_215109462-600x450.jpg

With the railcar and Jagdpanther in place.

PXL_20201203_215225699-600x450.jpg

So that's this all finished. Now to dive into the Stratos.

Thanks Bob!  That's would have be fantastic to see. My wife would probably veto the idea. I did manage to get her to agree to a pair of 1/32 Lancs though.

That would be crazy. Just need a Dora to finish it off.

Looks brilliant, really like it on the flat bed, great work.

Rather like the Meng one you did earlier too, what did you use for the zimmerit on it?

Super modelling, and two Lancasters, had been tempted by the stand alone cockpit but no way I could find a home for a complete one......

Cheers
