Belkits MG Metro 6R4

Looking good Gary, i bought the Rothmans version, looking like I'll have to have this one as well!! Can't understand why they did the tyres like that, looks a bit odd. I've bought some tarmac rims from aftermarket to replace the kit rims. I'll have to check what they're like and see if they are thicker at the rear...

John beat me to it, but I was going to ask about painting the inner rim black too. Probably only a goer if you could get the wheels off safely and remove the tyres too - not the end of the world though if you're not in position to do that with the mudflaps to go on. Looking really good - now why is it that now I have a space in the stash somehow all the Malcolm Wilson 6R4's have gone AWOL. Looking forward to seeing this one finished,

Would painting the inner rim of the wheel in black help to disguise the "low profile" inner sidewall?  Although if you've got the wheels on, I'd leave it rather than risk messing up your excellent work.

There is a Computervision MG Metro 6R4 in the British Motor Museum, although I can't claim to know every detail (which might not match the car you're modelling anyway) your model looks like a great representation of this distinctive rally car.

Thanks for your comments, John . I’m going to leave the wheels as they are . Don’t want to mess up at the final hurdle !
Researching this kit has led to viewing loads of photos of “Computervision “ 6R4s , and an amazing array of detail differences. I seem to think the museum car you mention is a Clubman spec car , with Computervision livery . Clubman cars had a standard dashboard .  International spec , like the kit , a bespoke dashboard . That’s how I tell the cars apart . As I have mentioned before finding photos of actual works cars on foreign events in 1986 is few and far between . 1000s of Quattros , 205 s and Deltas though !

When I follow this I am tempted to start making H. Toivonen car in 1000 lakes rally.

Great photo.  I met Harri at a Rally Show a couple of years ago.  Really nice chap , so brave to continue rallying in

Group  B cars so soon after the death of his brother.

 Thanks everyone for the comments.

This Metro in @mbdesignart link is one of two that came in Finland -86. And my understanding is that this was some-kind of clubman+ car. Of course second question is what spec this car was restored.

Need to check if this car is in one farmer's collection in Laukaa. Then I might be able to get some photos from it when Covid restrictions are over.

Edit.

This Metro restored by MAT is in Laukaa/Finland

I picked up on a few comments about the wheel inners and agree that hey do look a bit odd.  Maybe the best thing to do is carefully and evenly shave the inner rims of the wheels back so that they become flush with the tyre wall by constant test fitting the tyres before any painting. Once satisfied that the inner wheel rim and tyre wall are flush take off the tyre and paint the inner wheel rims matt black. The low profile tyre effect as per kit will not be noticeable so much when viewed from the rear of the car.

From what I have seen the Belkits 6R4 looks to be a very nice kit generally and worth working on.

Despite being a masochist and kit bashing bits from the horrid old MRM 6R4 resin kit to a Burago Die cast Metro body, I might still treat myself to the Belkits one.

Someone mentioned that a Ford Cossie Sapphire was in the offing. That I will be looking out for!

Despite a few problems early in the build , this has turned out to be an enjoyable build .
It was me who mentioned the new Sap Cosworth kit , also I got a recent newsletter from Spotmodels featuring Audi Sport Quattro and Rothmans Porsche 911 rally car kits from Beemax / Aoshima / Nunu . A good time for rally car modelling .

A very expensive one too - with also announced kits of the Capri RS2600, Ascona 400 and Renault 5, Clio and Megane Maxis.... I need them all!!

Still need a new state of the art Mk2 Escort though!

I’m not into radio controlled cars , but I’ve seen on Twitter a new Tamiya Escort MK2 RC car . It’s a proper forest arch shell . I don’t know exactly how accurate it is , but wouldn’t it be good if they produced a 1:24 kit as well .

It has been known for Tamiya to mimic what they do in R/C in 1/24th. It would be nice to have a Tamiya Escort Mk2, but I'm not confident...

I mentioned the Tamiya Mk2 in another thread and I feel the same as you Steve. As you say they have done some in both scales (Escort Cossie comes to mind) but there's also others I always hoped they'd do - such as the BTCC Mondeo and Audi A4 which I doubt now will ever appear in 1/24.

I remember years ago seeing a Tamiya RC Lancia Integrale in my local model shop , long before Hasegawa made their kit versions . I got all hopeful of a 1:24 kit , but it’s never happened !

Ever get the feeling when nearing the end of a build that all the small bits to do go on and on and on ..... Well I’m at that stage with the Metro . I’ve been preparing underbody protection . I’m not a fan of this because it covers up detail , so I don’t usually glue the pieces into place . The Metro has a full length piece , with a rear diffuser and there is Kevlar decals to cover it all . I cut the decals to make fitting easier , and they when on well .

The rear suspension is covered with a black rubbery plastic , also used for the  mudflaps . The mudflaps should be blue , but I’ve left them black as I wasn’t sure about paint peeling off the rubbery plastic . The rears push into slots and have PE brackets , a nice detail touch . They hide the view of the odd tyre sidewalls from the rear , so that’s good .

That’s all for now , thanks for looking ,

This build is great the attention to detail and skill 8nvolved is top notch. I was looking at doing one of these kits soon but I think I need to get more experience first to do it justice how hard do you think the kit is for a beginner? Is it something to try after i get a few more under my belt or is it strictly for the more experienced builders?

If my experience with the Fiesta is anything to go by that was a good call not painting the soft vinyl pieces - the paint just jumped off those as soon as you looked at them. Hate those kits like this where you feel you're almost finished and then have ten million small pieces to add - it's quite demoralising but the end result is almost always worth it. This is looking really good now.

Thanks for your interest  , Scottey . I must say this kit is probably not a good starting point for beginners . Certain parts of the build took a bit of thinking about , but , please don't let me put you off . If asked about a good starting point  , I always suggest Tamiyas Subaru Imprezza WRC rally cars . Easy to build , only a few colours needed and minimal decals to apply  .

So , finally , the last WIP update . The final pieces fitted . I’ve held off side windows as holding the car is easier with them out . I prefer to leave the drivers side glass out on my models so some of the interior detail can be seen . The inner frame of the side glass is body colour , the plexiglass on the real thing obviously just screwed to the door frame . Each screw head on the window and the slider I dabbed with aluminium paint on the end of a cocktail stick . I find kits with glass for each window so much easier than the usual type of one big mould , that needs to be glued to the roof . On this photo you can also see the tiny PE door lock . So fiddly to apply , but great detail .

And the finishing touch , the roof aerial . I warmed up the supplied metal rod with a candle , then melted it into the roof mount and coloured it black with a Sharpie .

And one shot of the finished item .

So that’s it . Does anyone know how to link the WIP to the RFI I will be writing ?
Thanks for looking and contributing , it’s been great . Thanks ,

  Gary .
