Seahawk
Most unusually I am reaching the stage when I shall have think about applying some exterior paint to my builds. In the old days I would have swooshed the kit around in water with a bit of washing-up liquid to remove sanding dust and finger grease. This seems risky nowadays with fragile acrylic paints and water-based fillers and glues. I’ve read of people wiping down with IPA. My numpty question is: with what do they do the actual wiping? Most products (tissues, old handkerchiefs) seem guaranteed to add more dust than they remove.
Black Knight
I sometimes, leave off the most delicate sticky-out parts, wash down with luke warm soapy water using an old dish washing sponge, leave to dry naturally
AltcarBoB
I have been using Alchohol hand wipes that come in small packets they do a good job. They arent so big you risk removing all the delicate parts but be careful they can damage Acrylic paint. Also some types can be quite a harsh texture so I avoid wiping clear parts just in case, I use a cotton bub dipped in Isopropanol for that. dogsbody
Before I painted my Hurricane ( the first kit that I've got that far on in decades and first airbrush use ) I used these small round pads that are for removing makeup. My youngest daughter is a makeup specialist at a local boutique and she got these for me. Just look around the makeup section of any store, be it pharmacy, grocery, etc and see what's there. I splash a little IPA on and gave it a wipe. Worked great! Chris 1
Seahawk
Good steer, Chris: thanks very much. My lovely partner has just given me a fresh pack of 100, which should last me about 100 years. I'll be trying them soon.
spruecutter96
To be frank, using IPA to clean kit sounds a bit "sledgehammer-to-crack-a-nut" to me (although it would do the job perfectly well). I would recommend you get hold of some foam-cleaner (AKA: hard-surface cleaner). It is produced by a number of makers, including Servisol. It's not the cheapest option around, but it's great at removing dust and grime from hard to reach areas. One 500ml can should last for ten to twenty kits, if used carefully. E-Bay is a good source. Cheers. Chris.

Chris I've just had this horrible vision of hundreds of middle aged, hairy bummed modellers trotting off to their local beauty boutique to obtain their fix of makeup wipes😁

I stand there in the "Beauty Isle", surrepticiously perusing the (actually chemical) stuff I want whilst leaing on the trolley handle, looking extremely bored, as Wife and Daughter Units compare and fill the trolley with their "needs". Then I point out to the wife what I want. She knows its for my modelling and stopped giving me surprised looks tears ago. The problem is... Sometimes my modelling area get raided for things they've run out of. 1
dogsbody
There's a lot of stuff in the beauty/boutique section that is useful to the modeller. Just go look. And most of it is cheaper than brand-name hobby items. Especially for me, as I get my daughter to buy it for me. so she gets her employee discount. Life is good.
