Armoured Cars and Halftracks GB Chat

Recommended Posts

Been thinking about this for some time now - an Armoured Car build

The armoured car appeared long before the tank emerged from the mud.
In Britain, the all of the armed services have used armoured cars at one time or another.

Overseas, most modern countries with an armed force have used armoured cars.

Definition, from Wikipedia: "A military armored (or armoured) car is a lightweight wheeled armored fighting vehicle, historically employed for reconnaissance, internal security, armed escort, and other subordinate battlefield tasks."

What do you think guys?

Isn't it time to let a wheeled armoured vehicle into the light?
Or at least, give it a group build...
-----
Following discussion this build will include halftracks

Quote

I've been mulling this over and I've had a search which turned up nothing so here goes:

Halftracks. One or more wheels at the front, at least one continuous track at the back [1]

Things started with the Kégresse tracked vehicles produced in 1911 for Czar Nicholas (and Lenin had a half track Rolls Royce. Very egalitarian) progressed through the Holt tractors and British APCs of the Great War then went a bit crazy in the 30s and into WW2 (just two examples - the Sd.Kfz 251 had well over 20 specialised versions while the White M3 served with nearly 50 nations and for almost 50 years in versions from the basic APC to the heavily modified Israeli anti-tank missile carriers).

Have a little wander through here if you need some inspiration: Half Tracks

From @Foxbat's halftrack GB https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235060070-halftracks/

{edit 16 Aug 2022}
Suggested Definitions
For the purpose of this build, an armoured car is a land vehicle with road wheels and one or more armoured compartments, usually for the protection of crew and engine.

For the purpose of this build, a half-track is a land vehicle that has road wheels and tracks.  It does not have to be armoured.

Fully tracked vehicles are not allowed.

Hmnnnn

not an armour modeller myself but I do love the look of the Fox. I suggested to Mrs T that we needed an off raider as living in the sticks. For some reason she immediately became suspicious as to my intentions.

Actually not a bad idea. At least you won’t get bodywork dings in the car park

I was interested to see AA do a 1/35 model. Not so interested at the £65 price tag :(

A Fox would be good.  Not an armour modeller? That's OK, we are all modellers here, AFVs, aircraft, figures ...
... and, by the time thios gets going,  you might find something with a more acceptable price tag out there.

You are welcome, I'll treat that as a committed maybe

Yes please Robert, probably with a WWI Lanchester.

You are welcome Cliff, a Lanchester is good too, I'd love to see one built.

Oooh count me in please, do you consider Halftracks armored cars or armored personnel carriers ?

Welcome Dennis.
Somebody was bound to ask about half-tracks; that question is one of my reasons for delaying this build so long.

About a year ago, @Foxbat suggested a Halftrack GB.

At the time, I felt there might be interest for either a halftrack build, or an armoured car build.
To have both suggestions running at the same time might have split community interest, and we'd've lost both builds.

Having said which, if Foxbat is willing - I'd be happy to combine the builds.

Thanks Robert.  It was a candidate for the 'In the Navy' Group Build, but I ran out of time.

I think a combined GB is a great idea, so happy to shut mine down and advise people who were interested to sign up here.

Thanks Andy, I will change the title of this build

@Corsairfoxfouruncle, yes, halftracks are allowed - thank-you for the question.

@Retired Bob, welcome to the build, you have suggested some excellent options for the build

I have quite a few armoured cars in the stash, and probably at least as many half-tracks, so I'm on board.

Some questions:

  • Do the half-tracks have to be armoured, or are "soft-skinned" vehicles eligible? If only armoured, no problem, I still have plenty of those.
  • Would open-topped armoured cars count, such as the Sd.Kfz. 234/3 (75mm infantry support) and /4 (75mm anti-tank) variants?
  • Would a gun-centric variant of a wheeled APC/IFV count? In other words, a variant which does not carry infantry*, and whose role is built around a gun. For example, the LAV-25:

US_Army_LAV-25A2_with_4-68_Armor_82nd_Ai

This is functionally equivalent to a "true" reconnaissance armoured car, such as the Spähpanzer Luchs.

*EDIT: Actually, it does carry some infantry, who act as scouts, therefore extending the basic reconnaissance role. This could end up like a theological discussion ...

Good questions @klr

Given that we are merging with the halftracks GB, soft skin halftracks are eligable.
Going to draw the line at wheeled soft-skin vehicles though - no lorries, trucks or jeeps

Yes

It is armoured and not fully tracked (OK no tracks at all), probably OK.

Armoured cars - Yes
Halftracks including soft skinned halftracks - Yes
Other soft skinned vehicles - No
Fully tracked vehicles - No

actually you can add me to the list as well.

I've always wanted to build one on those German 8 Wheeled beasties, either Sd.Kfz-231 or 234 etc, probably a Afrika Korps one.

Don't have any in the stash, but there's alway good old evilBay!  :D
