The Rib Man
With permission, I will join the GB with my shot at the Eduard 1/48 BF 109E kit. I started building on Thursday and was hesitant to put in the GB based on remaining time, but I think between the quarantine and shortening days I will be able to squeeze it in. Future build on the agenda for a rival from the good guys side (ie, a Spitfire), but that will have to wait for now. This will be my first plane from the dual boxing kit: My plan is to go with the markings below of a plane flown by Adolf Galland in August 1940. I have found a couple pictures of this unusual paint scheme online, which happens to be one of the schemes shown on the box top. I will save the other plane in the box for one of the more common mottled yellow-nosed schemes. I was busy practicing my mottling while I waited for the box to arrive in the post. The Rib Man
I will start with a few comments about the kit. The fit and quality of the detail is fantastic. There are a lot of tiny pieces in the box compared to my last few builds, and I will admit I was a bit on the intimidated side at first. I am planning to build the kit OOB unless something glaringly missing pops up along the way. I will go with the exposed engine/gun bay option. Here I have started on the cockpit and the oil cooler assembly.
The Rib Man
I have mostly finished the cockpit interior and painted with RLM 2. I realized I made a mistake on the alignment of the oil cooler assembly and had to very carefully cut apart to re-assemble in the right configuration. This was my first photo etch beyond a few jet fighter seatbelts. I will admit I was utterly unprepared for the masochism involved in dealing with all the tiny fiddly bits. I have a newfound respect for many of the builds I have seen online. With that said, I am pretty happy about how the cockpit tub is coming together.

The Rib Man
I got the engine bay and cockpit installed in the fuselage and the two haves glued together. This is always the most stressful part for me, but the parts fit together very nicely.

The Rib Man
Got the wings and tail stabilizers on and a coat of primer down. Just a couple little trouble spots need some filling and sanding. I seem to be breaking off everything that is possible to break off of this one, so contemplating how many more parts to add before I start with the painting.
The Rib Man
Got down a coat of RLM 65 on the bottom and sides.
The Rib Man
I started out painting the RLM2 on the upper wings and fuselage, but got carried away and took a stab at the mottling as well. I did the mottling by cutting templates in a sheet of card stock (in this case an empty box of taco shells), and spraying through with an airbrush. I use the same method for masking the line between the grey and blue for the softer edge. I am mostly very happy with the results. I may try to do a little touching up, but don't want perfect to get in the way of good.
The Rib Man
Added the landing gear and a panel line wash. Also added a bit of engine exhaust and exhaust from the gun barrels.
The Rib Man
Decals on. Starting to get some personality now. Seems like it could use a propeller soon.
The Rib Man
I've been reading a lot about the Eduard decals and complaints about the thickness of the carrier. I didn't really have any issues. With decal solvent they found their way into the rivets, etc. There was one spot I just couldn't live with the carrier film, which was the corner of the walkway decals. I tried to remove the carrier film with mixed results. I had better luck when I burnished the dried decal and then lifted the carrier with tape. I think I actually like the look for this spot (the kit came with extras anyway), but I would be terrified to try on the bigger decals that I want whole. I did not remove the carrier on the text labels.
Stew Dapple
She's looking really good now mate and the decals have certainly bedded down nicely, what setting solution did you use? Cheers, Stew

The Rib Man
Calling it finished. Very fun kit to build with great details out of the box. This was my first group build, and it was fun documenting and seeing all of the other great models. On to its adversary the Spitfire (not for this this GB).
