Arado 196 (#80241) *Finished*

Wow! That's one impressive looking Arado so far. Great work and great detailing too and it's making my 196 look a little basic in comparison. One thing I hadn't given consideration too was the inter float rigging. I think I'm going to have to try and remedy that one.

Very neat modelling! I admire the cockpit detail. This is going to be a great looking Arado. The enhancements make a huge difference.

That's a lovely looking kit and some great work you're doing there, the engine detail is superb, and I always admire someone who will take on a model with floats - and rigging!

Cheers!

Great to see the inter float rigging which has turned out so well.

I remember doing it on a 1/48 MC72 which was awkward so doing it at 1/72 is very impressive.

Cheers Pat

Thank you @JOCKNEY
This is my first attempt at it. I thought this would make a good entry point. It went OK; not perfect, not bad, but good enough to make me want to try more complex rigging projects.

You're making good progress on this one. The floats and cockpit look real nice.

Thanks @JeroenS

Still got plenty of time to ruin everything 😄

I'm sure you'll do a better job at it 🙂

Yes, in the end it is worth all the extra hours and name calling 🤐

Good evening all,

more (slow) progress made. Either I wasn't allowed or when I was allowed, things wouldn't always go well...

Anyway. Where were we? Ah, yes.

So the last details were added...

IMG_20210103_143812

The model was wiped with lint free cloth dampened in IPA (not the kind you'd drink) and was ready for the primer...

IMG_20210103_201102

After the bad experience I had with Humbrol's acrylic primer (and the so-so experience with Vallejo's grey acrylic primers) I decided to try Alclad grey primer.

I followed the instructions on the bottle and the application went without problems. But when it dried, it had a rough finish. Looking at it you would thought it had a "dusty" "powdery" look. As if the model had sitting there gathering dust for the last couple of years. I went over as much of the model as I dared with micro-mesh sanding cloth (6000 grit).

IMG_20210104_223347

IMG_20210104_223356

The light areas are the ones I have treated with the sanding cloth while the darker ones are the original primed surfaces (see what I mean by "dusty"). I didn't like this to be hones and, as a bonus, I managed to break off some bits in the process. Not happy.

Anyway, next I applied some white in preparation for the yellow bands...

IMG_20210105_210347 IMG_20210105_210356

That was Testors semi-gloss acrylic white. And now for AK's acrylic RLM04...

IMG_20210105_230046

Which I then masked using tamiya tape and micro scale masking liquid.

IMG_20210108_195602

Next was to be the RLM72. But which one?

IMG_20210108_142925

I decided to go for the Vallejo one only because the RLM73 I had was also from Vallejo and thought I'd better trust one manufacturer for their interpretation of the colours rather than two.

IMG_20210109_183640

RLM72 went on without any problems. It was then masked off...

IMG_20210113_214259 IMG_20210114_215735

Next came Vallejo's RLM73...

IMG_20210118_222527 IMG_20210118_222550 IMG_20210118_222608

That too went on without any problems. And then I started to remove the masking tapes so I could mask effectively for the RLM65. But that was NOT without problems...

IMG_20210116_144832 IMG_20210119_211549 IMG_20210119_211600

Paint came off with the tape revealing the primer underneath! 😱🤬 I had to repair this before moving on... 🥺

With the repairs complete, more masking tape was applied. I had decided to paint the floats & struts assembly separately from the aircraft itself as it would make masking/de-masking and painting easier. Hopefully...

IMG_20210124_130805 IMG_20210124_130825

Then the mummy was once more unravelled only for more paint to stay on the masking tape...

IMG_20210124_145009 IMG_20210124_144519 IMG_20210124_144533 IMG_20210124_144659

Last but not least, here's a view of the undersides:

IMG_20210124_144641

Notice the rough areas where I couldn't sand down the primer. Not nice. Anyone else had the same problem with Aclad (matt) primers?

Next will come the gloss coat but first more repairs are required. One step forward, two steps back ☹️

As always, thank you for looking and for leaving a comment.

Wow! The Arado is looking very sharp! The etched stuff and extra detail really makes this old (but great) kit really stand out. Great work.

That's two Arado's that need some repair then. I still need to fix the float strut on mine. Interesting to see the inter float bracing painted RLM 65. I think I may have to paint mine now as I like the look of it.

Good afternoon everyone,

here's another update for this build. It lasted more than it should, I know.

So, after the paint was repaired again and again (it took almost a week in real time), the model received it's gloss coat

IMG_20210130_135954

Gauzy agent worked well but notice how the roughness of the primer coat still shows through the paint and the gloss coats

IMG_20210130_135944

Anyway, it was time for the decals (made by Kora)

IMG_20210131_125132

Cutting as close to the markings as I dared, the process went on without too much of a trouble

IMG_20210131_134355

The smaller stencils proved to be very delicate and brittle

IMG_20210201_204209

While waiting for the decals to dry, the red details were added (RLM23 by vallejo)

IMG_20210131_224136 IMG_20210201_204236

Then another gloss coat was applied to prepare everything for a light panel line wash (tamiya brown for the undersides and black for the topsides)

IMG_20210201_225003 IMG_20210201_225033

When everything dried a matt coat was applied (W&N matt UV varnish). I can't get out of my mind how rough the undersides look

IMG_20210203_210608

Next it was time to work on the prop too...

IMG_20210201_225639 IMG_20210204_200904 IMG_20210204_201628

Sometimes, it's the small things that make an impression. See here the resin MG to replace the non-existent kit detail

IMG_20210204_203142

Then the engine and cowling assembly was attached

IMG_20210204_210455

And then it was time for the struts & floats assembly. The finish line is in sight!

This is the last WIP update for this build... and I write this with mixed feelings. The next post will be in the group build gallery as a finished project. It took three months to get to that and I was more than glad to see the end of it. However, although dry fitted and tested before paint, the struts refused to fit properly now. In addition to that, the rigging became laxed, sagging and loose. None of these problems could be fixed at this stage. It came as a major disappointment after all this work and effort I put into this.

Oh well.

As always, thanks for looking and thank you for leaving a comment.

Thank you @fightersweep Yeah it's more practical and it looks good but don't quote me on its historical accuracy 😉

Good that you persevered despite the troubles it gave you. Looking forward to seeing it in the gallery.

Might be worth it to have a go at another one of these...
