John that hull looks superb,👍

Thanks a lot for the comments. Moving slowly because life's little jobs keep getting in the way.

Moving around to the front, the first job that had to be done was to remove the brackets for the gun travel lock. The resulting holes were filled with some pieces of card and finished off with some putty.

Moulded on grab handles removed from both hatch covers and replaced with .5mm brass wire. I used the kit’s periscope brush guards. I know that they are a bit on the thick side, but I hate the etched brass offerings, no matter who make them. Invariably, they are too thin (and weak), and they are all one dimensional. So until I can get some more 3D printed ones from Shapeways, the kit ones will suffice.

I joined the upper and lower halves of the hull and was surprised to find a couple of gaps, but these were quickly dealt with, using card at the rear and putty at the front.

The two side pieces for the front, curved part of the track guard, were replaced with thin card as the kit parts were too thick.

I've a few more to add, but right now, my stomach thinks that my throat has been cut, so I'm off to have a beef stroganoff.

Thanks for looking.

Lovely John, moving along nicely mate, going to save the fender detail you did for my build

Thanks Dan. It's made easier if you have the kit part to use as a pattern.

Perfect build!

I really like small details, the more there are, the better the result.

Vytautas

Thanks Vytautas. You and me both. I think that the small details make a model.

Thanks to you all for the comments.

@Bullbasket Hi John, your detailing work is outstanding as always! It's always worth looking at your work and learning from your skills.

Stay safe

Thank you Nick. That's very good of you to say.

OK, so the last few jobs on the front of the tank.

The etched brass parts for the cover on the horn were an absolute PITA to assemble. I wish that some AM company would come up with something much easier and realistic. I believe that on later versions of the M51, this cover housed an infrared lamp.

Headlamp brush guards added. The tubes for the headlamp blanks will be added later.

The top bracket, from which the rolls of barbed wire were hung, came from the Tamiya M51 kit, and the bottom clamp was made by bending scrap etched brass strip to shape, and adding a hinge (stretched sprue) and a wing nut, courtesy of Bronco’s A13 Cruiser tank kit.

I believe that these tanks were built by Chrysler, and that the glacis plate was designated as early, mid and late. Basically, the differences were in the lifting rings (inset on the early) and the top of the glacis being bevelled on the early. On the mid and late glacis, there was no bevelling and the lifting rings were positioned on the outer edge on the late.

That's the lot for now. The hull is done, and I've made a start on the turret, so I'll be back with an update when I have something to show.

Stay safe.

John.

What them both said!

Nice work with the photo etch, the mods and drilling out the muzzle.

One day John once you've finished every Sherman variant you're going to have to find another muse...

There was I imagining you'd be doing a run of Tortoises!

Good, nice to hear you're preparing yourself for "the day", bit like Brexit I guess, you know it's coming but struggle to imagine it!
