Great news to see a new Albatross!  What are SOVA-M kits like, I've never heard of them?

SOVA-M is related to Amodel in Ukraine - some versions released under the SOVA-M, others under Amodel brand name.

Don`t expect Hasegawa or FineMolds quality, but decent kits with recessed panel lines that will need a bit of old fashioned modelling skills with putty and sand paper.

  • Homebee changed the title to 1/72 - Grumman SA-16A/UF-2/SHU-16B Albatross by SOVA-M - box art+decals - release November 2020

In view of the fact that the 1/72 Monogram Albatross kit is an SA-16B with a different wing, I have attached a link to some text and reference photos of the SA-16A for your viewing pleasure. SOVA-M is to be commended for doing the 'short wing' A model, and I'm sure they will also release the B model, as well. If they engineered the kit correctly, both versions should be easy to produce. I hope the link will be useful. (Didn't A-model do an SA-16A in 1-72? Wonder if this release is based on that tooling?)

The Amodel kits are in 1:144, and included both short wing and long wing versions:

SOVA-M have announced the SHU-16B and a JMSDF UF-2 version in 1:72, which should have the later engine nacelles as well as the long wing.

Not being an Albatross expert, what version did the Canadians have. I have some decals and a Monogram kit, but a newer kit would be nice.

Could be a nice one... especially if they do do the longer wing one as shown by the image of the one with the big rAdome on the nose. Italian, Greek and Norwegian come to mind.

By the way the AModel kits were 1/144th.

Just Norwegian and Greek (ex-Norwegian), Paul. Spain had a few too :) The Italian machines were the earlier thimble nose type. Having said that I’m not an Albatross expert ;)

Looks like the UF-2 boxing of the SOVA-M Albatross has been released:

The artwork shows the intakes above the engine nacelles required for the later engine configuration that the JMSDF used.

(I get the impression that the later configuration was similar to the hardware fitted to the Grumman S2F Tracker - good commonality for the JMSDF if correct.)

From the sprue pictures I can't tell whether the kit allows the earlier engine configuration to be built, without the intake on top:

https://abpic.co.uk/pictures/model/Grumman UF-2 Albatross

Or whether the kit has the earlier configuration, the same as included in the SA-16A boxing, with only the addition of the intake on top.

That will have to wait until the kit arrives.

I like the look of this kit..... I may have to persuade myself..    As for the 1/144 kit I have done one and used CanMilair decals for it as an RCAF scheme. Long wings.

They should also had put the long wing in the boxing’s for the to allow you to make a long wing US version.....as the engines from the UF2 would be probably incorrect i think based on the information given....nevertheless they have given us a choice of a good looking Albatross👍
