L391 Search and Rescue LeO 453S - Update 15mar21 - Flory wash, windows, hand rail, etc

Morning all!

I am happy enough to declare my runner for this GB, the LeO 45 to be built as a 453S (Sauvetage - Rescue) I hope!. This will be finished as a postwar SAR/high-speed transport aircraft of SASM 99 as operated in North Africa. Another reason for wanting to build this is that my younger grandson is Leo! ;)

As you will all know this is the kit:

C28AE2FB-3F16-4208-AB6B-4143C9965FBD

E6300640-E842-48DD-81DE-802007FBEA9D

The challenge will be getting the engine and cowlings correct as they had Pratt  Whitney 1830-67s instead of the Gnome Rhones. If I dont make a start on her at the beginning of the GB I might not make the end! ;). This is a good source for anyone building a LeO: https://www.secretprojects.co.uk/threads/lioré-et-olivier-leo-projects.9017/.  I will need decals and will go to Arctic Decals for these once they are drawn?

See you all again soon :)

Good going Martin!
You’ve been threatening promising to build this kit with revised powerplant for a while now, so it’s great to see you declaring your hand here. This will be another great WIP to watch, good luck.
Cheers.. Dave

That's an impressive book, who's the publisher?

Anyway welcome to the GB, the kit dates from 1966, its original catalogue number was L391.

Good luck with this one Martin.

Simon is great to deal with too. Know him from my days as buyer with Midland Counties Publications.

It would if it was in stock @fightersweep ;). I agree, Simon was Phil Camp’s partner in crime on their trips to Indi. It is local to me - I was there last week! I will give him a ring :). Thanks for the heads up!

Yeah I don’t doubt it’s an excellent book, and only volume 1 at that. Short print runs drive costs up I guess.

I wonder if I would close To what I need with C-47/DC-3 cowlings, resin engines and exhaust?

See if anyone has any special hobby B-18 kit cowlings also ? Those were based on the DC2/3 airframes. My kit had four different cowling types, only one is used depending on which block of B-18 is built. So somewhere there are three sets of cowlings in spares.

My target airframe for this build:

DBBCA63E-648A-4CB6-8542-7493CA37DA4D

Noting:

1. the mainwheel "debris guards"

2. no armament

3. under-nose antenna bullet

4. Engines (of course - I've banged on about them already)

5. tail and nose badge - need to find that somewhere

That’s a beauty. Sorry if it’s a daft question but is it RAF? I know sometimes roundel colours get messed with by old film.

I'm getting things together slowly.. The Jean-michel Meunier book is now on order and I'm thinking about decals. I think I have the letteringand numbering sorted and now need to work out what badge this is. Any ideas (in red)?

badge

I also need an Airfix Dak from which  to pilfer the cowlings etc!

Someone somewhere who has done a turbo Dak conversion, either the Conroy one or the RR Dart engined prototype that BEA flew for a bit, I recall one of them being done a year or few back.

No, Tony, it is French, based in North Africa...:)

It's a fantastic example. Shows off the lines of the aircraft beautifully.
