spruecutter96
I'm a very sceptical about several aspects of this video. Kramer had two 20mm shells hit him in the chest? He would almost certainly be killed instantly in this situation - not just bleeding profusely. The tail acted as a glider? Wrong shape, not enough lift generated to support itself, a gaping hole in the "front" which would induced a great load of drag. The firing of four .303 machine-guns helped keep the tail in the air? No, it didn't. I think we can put this one down to "urban myth", to be honest. Chris. Edited October 4, 2020 by spruecutter96 Amending some information. Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies
I've read this story long ago and distinctly remembered it being a Lockheed Ventura rather than a Lancaster. After some search, it's credited to Sgt William Stannard of 487Sqn RAF, shot down in Ventura AE684 (EG-B) on 3rd May 1943. https://aviationtrails.wordpress.com/heroic-tales-of-world-war-2/sgt-william-stannard-487-sqn-raf-raf-methwold/
Graham Boak
Yes, but we must remember that in the UK every wartime bomber was a Lancaster, just like every fighter was a Spitfire. 1
Blimpyboy
Shades of Joe Jones Jr. and Eugene Moran (but they were in the tail sections of B-17s, and they tumbled, rather than ‘flew’ to earth): http://www.americanairmuseum.com/person/116195 and https://madison.com/news/state-and-regional/ww-ii-pow-bomber-crash-survivor-dies-in-soldiers-grove/article_6d3bddc7-0702-5b93-aa37-2be0771bb431.amp.html Edited October 5, 2020 by Blimpyboy

Johnha
Bit late to this. I heard a similar story back in the '80s, the rumour was apparently related to a Lanc/Halifax tail gunner where the tail 'spun' down like a sycamore seed...
