770 - Scania LB 141 - Finished!

Soooo we're 14 builds in at the time of writing and I think it's time to counter these 14 builds with something that does NOT have wings. May I throw the 1/24 scale classic Scania 141 into the fray....

The box art is simple yet attractive. This is an old school '70's / '80's truck, I love them. I got this kit used as soon as I noticed this GB. They are quite rare in the original boxing.

A bunch of sprues, but actually not that much. I think the parts count is not that high. However, as you can see some of the sprues have suffered from having been repacked and (probably) stored at the bottom of a stack of boxes (that was before I got it).

I'll just have to see how much trouble this will give me. The chassis seems to be relatively straight. Some more chassis parts:

Fuel and air tanks.

20200925143337-dd8259f9-me.jpg

Cab parts. I like the fact that the doors are separate.

20200925143337-3aeff4fb-me.jpg

But... but... this is serious damage. The rear part of the cab, seen here bottom left, has some pronounced warping... Luckily, there's an inner part (top left) which is pretty straight so that should help.

This shows the warping a little better:

Well, it is what it is. A lot of hot water and careful bending should come a long way.

The engine has been started but this is way under 25% 🙂

I have some Kit Form Services rims and hubs which are almost always far better then kit parts. The kit tyres are a bit strange, they're soft but there's 2 halves for each tyre. No side detail at all. Luckily I have a heap of standard Italeri tyres so I'll use those instead.

Some clear parts. The windshield is missing from this sprue which gave me a bit of a scare but I found it floating around in the box.

A wee decal sheet...

20200925151322-2edf10e5-me.jpg

Finally, some nice PE badges and lights from Czech Truck Model.

20200925143339-dd861049-me.jpg

Now, the only thing I desperately need is time! I have no idea whether I'll be able to finish it but I'll make a start anyway.

Ooops!  Looks drastic but I'm sure you can recover the situation Jeroen.

Nice to see one of Heller's trucks in this GB.

Bienvenue et bonne chance!

  • JeroenS changed the title to 770 - Scania LB 141

Impressive bit of model there Jerome, shame about the warped piece, however hopefully that will play ball and straighten up for you once you get there. I’d be inclined to tackle this issue first, should things go wrong you have plenty of time to put this kit away and move on to another.
Cheers and all the best.. Dave

That is actually a very good suggestion, I'll have a look this weekend. Straightening this piece should have no impact on the 25% rule 🙂

I have a couple of other builds going on but on the day a GB starts I want to glue stuff! The engine was partly built when I received the kit, but it sort of fell apart so first I re-attached everything and then I finished it. As usual it's a pretty big beasty in 1/24.

I don't have a lot of time the coming months so I think this will be a pretty much OOB build. But I will try and add some wiring and such to the engine and the most obvious chassis parts. A 1/24 truck looks quite bare without them.

The chassis consist of a top and bottom part, I haven't seen that before.

20201003203212-e6edbe47-me.jpg

They go together quite well and the chassis looks nice and straight which is always a plus.

Finally, I thought I'd start some sub-assemblies which always gives a sense of progress doesn't it. I'll do some more tomorrow and try to finish the chassis. I must say, fit is pretty good so far and there's almost no flash. Everything has gone together quickly up to now.

Nice start! Any news on the warped part?

The news is: it's less warped. I think it'll work out.

I'm continuing with making sub-assemblies, putting all the "halves" together for things like airtanks and this exhaust.

20201004073901-cc49b864-me.jpg

I think the moulding could be described as "basic" but the fit is good. The exhaust tip is hollowed out, this is not always the case, no drilling needed here.

I've noticed that there are no pins or anything to help you put the halves together but on the other hand, these pins (and their corresponding holes) are often not very well alligned so I end up cutting them off anyway.

It quickly makes a nice part which needs only minimal sanding and maybe a bit of filler here and there to finish it off.

I've read about this kit that the accuracy is not 100% but I don't actually mind at all, I think it will look really decent when finished.

Great to see the Scania being built.

Thats a vey unusual colour of plastic, more associated with Matchbox products.

At 1/24 this must be a big kit, can you take one of your pictures with a ruler next to the chassis so we can appreciate its size please.

Brst of luck with the build.

Have you thought about the livery for it ? Local company that used to use them ?

cheers Pat

Morning Pat! The red plastic is a bit odd indeed. The cab parts are kind of yellow/orange, which is even odder. Well, I'm just glad it's not blooo 🙂

Anyway. The LB 141 in a 4 x 2 setup is not really all that big.

20201004111417-34d7b9b3-me.jpg

As you can see it measures 23 centimeters (which according to my online converter is 9,06 inch, I have no idea how you would describe that, probably "just over 9 inches" 😉). In real life it would translate to a length of "just over 5,5 meters".

It's kind of dwarfed by the chassis of the T143 which I'm also building.

20201004111416-356eb287-me.jpg

As for livery, I have thought of that. Personally I'm not a real big fan of company logo's and stuff like that. Mainly because I like to paint in whatever colour I fancy, and if there's a company name on it you get the "it was never driven in that colour" or "this or that is not right for this particular truck". I hate that. So my trucks are mostly devoid of markings except for the generic ones.

As for colour, I'm thinking something like this

20201004111556-c5482094.jpg

or this (but less glossy)

20201004111557-bb926a30-me.jpg

or I might even go for this

20201004111556-fbaf4aba.jpg

in which case I will brush paint the entire cab to get that specific look. I actually rather like this one, the more I think about it. But this is still far away, it looks like we have some busy times ahead with an upcoming house move. However, I must say this thing is going together rather quickly. Not at all like the previous Heller kits I've done so far...

My vote goes for the restoration project, too.

You mean the abandonded restoration project .... by the looks of it 🙂

I'm starting to really like it myself.

You could be straying into @tiking's world but more support for the abandoned restoration project here (or in modellers' speak "awaiting mojo"), perhaps with a couple of different coloured panels robbed from a spares donor ?

Today was a pretty productive day. I continued putting together sub-assemblies, and apart from the cab itself I've just about finished that, ending with the seats.

20201004175058-30292345-me.jpg

I've separated air tanks from battery boxes on both sides, so I could glue the battery boxes to the chassis and add a little bit of detail to the air tanks later.

20201004175056-39069317-me.jpg

I had already put together the rear axle but I'd been stupid to glue on the discs representing the brake hubs already. The whole thing would have been too wide when the KFS resin hubs were attached. So they needed to go, and were then replaced with the KFS hubs which look really nice.

20201004175057-a172c5ae-me.jpg

I added a little bit of wiring, just so at least some wires are visible on the finished truck. I have a bag of resin connectors and I took one out and glued it to the axle. The wiring is done with flexible wire and small pieces of copper tube. The two loose ends will disappear into the chassis at some point.

20201004175058-e01f3173-me.jpg

The chassis is now almost complete because I also added the front axle assembly.

20201004175057-cb89ba7f-me.jpg

I'll add some wiring there too.

It's all very red though...

We used to see a lot of “plain Jane” 141s, and others of course, in the import and export freight areas at Dover in the late 70s and early 80s, as well as the company-liveried examples.  We also saw more than the occasional scrapyard escapee, especially among the Eastern European and Middle Eastern operators.  Some of the owner drivers’ vehicles were pretty smart too.  It took a little while for us to warm to the 112 and 142 on the looks front but they were  impressive pieces of kit.  Happier, simpler times!

I've been chipping away at the Scania for the past couple of evenings, a couple of hours here and there. Not much to report, just time consuming stuff.

Brake lines on both sides.

20201008212152-9ae341bc-me.jpg

And a start on some random plumbing in the chassis to fill it out a little.

20201008212152-f4feaa24-me.jpg

I have this book which is absolutely amazing.

20201008212151-7a8fc68a-me.jpg

It's 160 pages, full of descriptions and lots and lots of photo's. This guy really knows what he's doing. As it happens, the Heller 141 is on the cover and there's a large chapter featuring the build. However, not a lot of the kit is actually used 🙂 Scratch built chassis, fuel tanks, engine... All on a level which I'll never reach but it's very educating and inspiring. You can do this at your own level and still add to your build. Truck kits are usually not very detailed, because there's not a large market and these kits are expensive enough as it is. So there's always room to add a lot of stuff which is actually good fun.
