My dad´s next finshed model.
Eduard kit, Exito Decals, plastic rods and lead wire for the brake lines, EZ Line for the antenna wire, MRP RLM76 and Gunze RLM 74/75.

Build thread here

https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235077410-escape-plan148-messerschmitt-bf109g-6mtt-regensburg-romanian-airforce/

The model displays the aircraft of Captain Constantin Cantacuzino. After Romania turned against Germany, on August 27th 1944 Cantacuzino was then given a special mission: to transport Lieutenant-Colonel James Gunn III, the highest ranking American prisoner-of-war in Romania, to the airbase at Foggia and return to Romania with 56 B-17s converted for transport duty to airlift 1,274 U.S. PoWs. He returned flying a P-51 Mustang because his Bf 109 could not be refueled.

p.s.: The antenna wire is supposed to look that way. When the mast was mounted on the Erla canopy, the wire went through the mast and was connected with the canopy locking mechanism. The antenna wire was only tensioned when the pilot locked the canopy.

That is so nice, and such an interesting story too!   Great job! :clap2:  Was Lt. Col. Gunn actually stuffed into this aircraft along with the pilot?

Yes he was, I´m not sure now but I think one sat on the others lap.

Beautifully built and an unusual subject too. I also didn't know about the antenna.

Thanks a lot for your comments, appreciated!

Her you can see how the wire tensioning system leaves the mast inside the canopy and is connected with the canopy locking mechanism.

At 6:50 in this video, when the pilot unlocks the canopy, you can see how the antenna wire becomes slack.

Here´s another vid of this aircraft where you can see the slack antenna several times.

Superb build as always, and a fascinating back story. How about the P-51 as well to complete the mission?

Kind regards,

Mark

Nice idea but I guess it isn´t known with which P-51 he flew back.

Thanks for the comments!

I think he was in the rear fuselage, up from the radio compartment.

I got to have a close up look in the cockpit of  Bf109G-2, Black 6, at RAF Hendon open cockpits evening,  and was amazed at how small it was, you really could not have two people in there and fly. ....

This got me thinking,  I'd read this somewhere,  a long time ago...  a quick hunt, yes, the 1966 Aircraft in Profile on the 109G, see centre pic

Bf109G%20Gustav%20(113)_Page_14-960.jpg?

from here

https://boxartden.com/reference/gallery/index.php/Modeling-References/Aircraft-Profiles/Germany/World-War-Two/Messerschmitt-BF109G

while much of the details in the booklet are incorrect,  the planes caption as K-4's aren't for starters,  I suspect the radio compartment  detail isn't.

neat model, :goodjob:
