Making Realistic Afterburner Flames . MIG-29SMT/UPG

Hello Everyone,

The build is a MIG29SMT built into an Indian Air Force MIG29UPG taking off on a Wet Runway with Glowing Afterburners.

The kit used is a Trumpeter MIG29SMT in 1/72 size.

Most of the work done was on making the Flame look realistic enough. The flame is Clear Resin and is lit by using 2 White LEDs housed in the exhaust cans.

The model is painted using the bare basic techniques of preshading and light coats of grey color to make this an IAF grey machine. Paints used were acrylics.

This was a first trial run to make the Afterburner Flames, so I hope this becomes a step in producing more of such models.

Do Enjoy the Build. . . Cheers . . . . 🙂

Nice build, it’s a very novel idea and not a bad execution but too gimmicky for me.

All I can see is a pair of wonky frozen carrots propping up a model.

I reckon if they were a smoother taper and perfectly parallel it would be better?
From some angles they look spot on but then others not so much. Perhaps make a nice smooth tapered master shape turned on a lathe, make a mould of it then cast an identical pair in resin? They can then be drilled for lights and painted etc.

Great result!

Mavbe some haze around would be great as well.... but that all depends on general lightning conditions!

One minor detail, I think the nozzles are open wider on the ground at iddle than in full afterburner....

Yes you are right the flames are wonky from some angles..  I tried the look of uneven flames as generally both will be a bit different due to the differences in airflow and winds affecting the flame...  Just trying to capture that look .. But yes 2 perfect flame comes on a lathe will fair much better than 2 wonky looking ones 😉

Good catch with the exhaust detail !!! I have been trying to work my head for the heat haze ...  Haven't found a solution to that yet  :-)...
