April 1965 'First Kill' This early Shenyang J-5 (license built MiG-17 'Fresco-A' by the chinese), number 2310, was flown by Pham Ngoc Lan on the 3rd of April 1965 when the first recorded VPAF kill was achieved. This happened over Thanh Hoa province and Pham Ngoc Lan claimed to shot down a F-8E of VF-211 flown by Lt Cdr Spence. But in fact, Crusader was only badly damaged in this incident and Spence made an emergency landing at Da Nang. - - - - - - Kit: Zvezda Soviet Fighter MiG-17 "Fresco" (#7318) Scale: 1/72 Aftermarket: Master pitot tubes & guns, Eduard brassin main wheels, Eduard PE Paints: Vallejo Model Color, Model Air & Metal Color, Tamiya Lacquer Weathering: Flory Models Wash, Mig streaking effects Decent all-around good kit from Zvezda (originally from Dragon). Pete in a shed
Excellent job. the detailing on the strakes and small round panels is spot on really bringing the model to life. Amazing size difference in comparison to the Thud. Cheers Pete

Luka
That's a very nice looking MiG 17 there. I was wondering though, with the Airfix kit in the background; which one do you prefer? They both look equally good.

It's the Trumpeter kit. 3 hours ago, Luka said: That's a very nice looking MiG 17 there. I was wondering though, with the Airfix kit in the background; which one do you prefer? They both look equally good. I think I still prefer the Airfix kit but both are nice. Good thing is that they are slightly different variants - Zvezda is MiG-17 'Fresco-A' and Airfix MiG-17F 'Fresco-C' - so why not have both I'm also building the AZ Model MiG-17.

exdraken
Very nice result! I would not call the MiG-17 David, as actually it was a better dogfighter, but amuch worse bomb truck! However, Vietnam won the war, at great and longterm cost...
