1/4 scale TAG Williams

Recommended Posts

This enormous thing had been consigned to the bin.

It was made for the Williams team long ago and somehow ended up being totally demolished.

The plastic box contains most of the other parts but a complete strip-down and rebuild will be needed.

The two rear wheels are missing but I'll get those sorted.

Hopefully a fun project.

The trouble is, WHERE will it go when finished as it's the best part of  44"  (1120mm) long...?

Somewhere in the past I saw a picture taken in the home of a Formula 1 driver. He had a car mounted on the wall.

So at 44 inches I should think this would look good in the mancave.

As for the Williams team, I saw their old transporter parked up, South of Lincoln a couple of years ago.

This one isn't THAT big...
About 3 1/2 - 4 ft in length., still VERY big.
It will be fun to try to resurrect this heap of scrap.

I'll post a few more pics of what I have soon.

I have a vague recollection from when I was working at Grand Prix Models that Western Models made it (or made some - perhaps 4?)

Yes, it was Western Models. There's a small decal on top stating it..

Sadly they went kaput long ago so spare parts can't be had now.

Even if they were still around, I don't think they would have spares. The 1/4 scale models were a very short term venture...

And very glad to know that my brain still has some recall facility!

Well, this one is now being lifted onto the work table.

A dig through the box of bits that came with the body seems to show all the major parts are present but everything is in a terrible condition.
It will all need a total strip-down, repaint and rebuild, plus add some of the missing details.

One of the problems though is the sheer SIZE of it all. It doesn't even fit on my work desk...

(Sorry, I’m a bit late to this one..)

Roy, that is a *fantastic* find.  Unless it’s in anyway sensitive, I’d love to know how and where you managed to come across a model like that.

This is another thread I’m going to have to follow....

I have been meaning to ask the same! That is the car of Jacques Lafitte,Monaco 1983. I recently showed the Western Models 1/24 version of that car in the inspection area. Chris.

Any pictures of your model - particularly around the suspension, rear end, interior - would be very much appreciated.

There's surprisingly little reference for this car out there on Google...

The model is an Ex- Williams display piece that was broken up and dropped in a skip.
The previous owner passed it to me for total restoration.

He also gave me a 1/4 scale Senna Williams in pieces, plus all the moulds and masters to create another one if needed...

The Lafitte car has been stripped, primed and is awaiting a gloss coat or three of white.
The rear upper deck has also been repainted and new decals added and some of the new decals for the body have also been printed.
The blue tint on the body decals (last pic) isn't actually there. The decals are properly green...

You just have to know where to look ;-)

I guess the model body is fiberglass?

The body has now had umpteen coats of gloss white and the yellow section is painted in too.

I've started to add some of the new decals but they are a REAL pain being so big.

They have a tendency to tuck over or under themselves which is a PITA to sort out.

Anyway - moving along slowly among my other projects...

I've done some more on this big lump now.

All the decals have been added and the whole thing had had 4-5 clear coats.

I've made the dash based on several different reference pictures as it seems it was altered slightly mid-season.
Driver ergonomics?

The seat is now trimmed in leather and I've started adding some of the huge amount of missing parts from the gearbox.

Not least - even the bolts.

Bear in mind this was originally just a display piece for Williams - not a 'high-detail' model so much of it is actually extremely basic.

I just want to get it all back in one piece with a bit more detail than it had to begin with.

BTW - The Lotus 49 sitting on it in pic 2 is the 1/12 Tamiya model - just to give an idea of size.
