Two Spits from Hornchurch

Hello all,

Here are my recently completed 1/48 Spitfire MK.1s from the Battle of Britain group build. As you can probably guess from the title, both were based at RAF Hornchurch during the summer of 1940. K9953 'ZP-A' of 74 Sqn was flown by F/Lt Adolph Malan, who would go on to score 16 victories during the battle.

N3162 'EB-G' of 41 Sqn was flown by P/O Stanley Lock, who would go on to score 21 victories during the battle.

A lot has been said about Eduard's MK.1, from the decals being wrong to I've forgotten what else. For me, these kits are just great and as I'm the sort who thinks 'if it looks good on a shelf, I'm happy' I wouldn't hesitate to build them again. Wonderful job by Eduard.

I've modelled them both to replicate them having returned from a busy flight, with cordite stains and the canvas .303 covers being breached. Paints are from MRP, weathering was done with a mixture of Abteilung oils, AK pencils and Tamiya powder sets. I used some Brassin exhausts,  AML camouflage masks and ordered overtrees from Eduard to give me another late style fuselage. Other than that they were OOB

The build thread is below:

The pictures then!

Thanks for looking.

Fabulous builds, beautifully painted and weathered. I particularly like that you have one A and one B scheme; it just adds to the interest. Were there any issues at all or did they just fall together?! The only thing I can see (and only because you've included the Hurricane in your last picture) is that, as reported, the Eduard roundel yellow looks a little lemony. Nothing you can do OOB though!

That's a lovely looking pair, Dave.  There's something magical about a mk1 Spitfire...  My Spitfire Story duo are currently right at the bottom of by building schedule, but I'm looking forward to getting stuck into them when I can (in fact, the Emil that I bought from you is just in front of them in the queue!).

They look lovely,..... great kit isn`t it?

Cheers

It's a lovely kit Tony. I don't know why I'm so shocked as their MK.IX is a delight to build, but as said above, there's just something about the MK.1!

I know exactly what you mean mate. Did you have a go at peeling the carrier film away from the decals?

I'd no idea this was a thing until it was mentioned in the build thread. In short, no! I'd sealed them in with Microsol and was fairly happy with the way they'd set so never really looked at them again! How did you go about it?

I was the same with mine,..I had even varnished over the top of them...... I thought the grey looked a bit grainy,...... then realised the codes for the 602 Sqn option were too small,..... so I tried to remove them and the carrier film lifted off to reveal decals with a painted on look, and more accurate colours with no grainy look. Unfortunately I had to remove the codes,..... which was quite hard,.... and replace them,...but the other decals were great.

I must take a look, knowing my luck they'll rip so might just leave them actually

Will know to consider it for the Profipack when it's released.

Worth practicing on an old model with some decals you won`t be using first I would say. Good luck.
