franky boy
Hi everyone Well I have far to much in the stash that qualifies for this GB but have finally settled on Hasegawa's Hurricane IIb in 1/48 scale for starters at least. I think it must have been the box art that did it in the end, I love those Hasegawa boxes from the 90's and 2000's. It's also been a while since I built a Hurricane. 9E9A2B30-2AAF-49AF-BD4F-B20BD485B585 by James Halls, on Flickr I'll be going for the box top scheme. HL795 from 274 squadron. I've ordered a set of Montex masks which cover this one as the kit has sat in the stash for years and I don't get on with Hasegawa decals at the best of times. Apart from that at the moment I plan to build oob for now? Here's the box of bits. A84B18B9-FF8D-419C-88B0-D062545B09C3 by James Halls, on Flickr Looking forward to getting cracking! franky boy
Hi everyone I made a very small start on the Hurricane yesterday. First of all I glued the nose sections onto their respective fuselage halves. The fit was good as expected. 72955F65-8360-43E8-8380-388FDA35E371 by James Halls, on Flickr I also decided to replace the incorrectly shaped part behind the armour plate as I want to display the canopy opened. So I cut out the plastic in preparation for the resin Quickboost part. 2680E39B-A797-4064-A423-334A4F6EDA61 by James Halls, on Flickr And that was yesterday’s modelling time complete! franky boy
Hi everyone Well it’s finally time to get cracking on the Hurricane again now that I’ve managed to clear the workbench a bit. So this is where it’s at. Ive never liked the part on the Hasegawa Hurricane kits that goes from the fuselage into armour plate behind the pilots seat. Sorry not sure of the real name for this part. Anyway I bought the Quickboost replacement parts for this. You get a larger part for an open canopy and a smaller part for closed. 1691601F-B5D6-4133-8A64-927144D2293E by James Halls, on Flickr This is the larger one superglued in place. 29FCDBCD-5782-4373-BB4A-7F09C0FC7BDD by James Halls, on Flickr Next up was some painting. Tamiya XF-71 cockpit green for the side walls and bulkheads. I chose to paint the frame work in aluminium just to add some interest. I’m don’t know if this is spot on for mk2 hurricanes but looking through pics on the net there seems to be a lot of variation. All of the other appts were picked out as per the instructions. This is was then given a wash with Flory Models sand wash and a dry brush with mr colour dark aluminium to simulate some chipping. 7AD5EDDF-5C01-49DA-86E6-7F83061E2DCC by James Halls, on Flickr I decided to try the decal supplied for the instrument panel as I’m rubbish at painting them although the decal sheet is 21 years old and seen better days. To my surprise with a bit of mr mark softer it settled down superbly. The armour plate is actually sitting a bit low on the bulkhead but I can live with this. 8882B2F5-BA4E-4B0C-9A43-A8346F3BD7EB by James Halls, on Flickr Ive got the wings on last night but don’t have a pic of that yet. I also bought a Pavla vac form canopy and a Montex Mask set for the markings. 8E31D7E1-56EA-4D8F-88B2-2BE4D031E558 by James Halls, on Flickr BCA52E2F-77F2-4F99-876A-383F724E66E2 by James Halls, on Flickr Thats all for now. More updates soon. Thanks for looking. James
franky boy
Hello chaps It's been ages since the last update so here goes. After the fuselage was buttoned up the wings went on to with out a hitch. Then it was onto seams and sorting out all of the inserts that Hasegawa provide for the leading edges. A bit of filler required here and there but no dramas. 47EFA99C-A49E-4651-A6E6-4AFEDB190660 by James Halls, on Flickr And then onto that pesky join that seems to plague all of the Hasegawa Hurricanes in this scale at the wing to rear fuselage join. 84EA1215-3EB6-49A7-A2E0-DCDF5FE3A999 by James Halls, on Flickr I actually ended up sanding out most of the fabric effect here but as I think it's over done any way I'm no to bothered. EFB50B5B-BF1D-4C77-B995-801906A558C0 by James Halls, on Flickr For the leading edge lights I used a piece of plastic card to cover the seam line and then a liquid molotov pen to add the silver and used the same for the light itself. 4C5A8F12-EDC3-4193-ABEA-E83056D89EF0 by James Halls, on Flickr EDEE132D-8743-4A0D-ACD0-6C535FBB18E8 by James Halls, on Flickr And then drilled out the rear of the wing tip lights and added the appropriate colour for the bulb. I also gave the rear fuselage a really thick coat of Mr Surfacer 100 and then a rub down to try and lessen the fabric effect here. TBH I probably could have gone a bit further but it's better than it was. A11D7C11-EA17-418C-AB95-8C56CF70469B by James Halls, on Flickr Then it was time for primer and on with the Montex Masks for the national insignia. The colours for these were mixed from Tamiya paints. 46815993-2657-453B-A2F0-49D988072DA8 by James Halls, on Flickr 44CC82F2-F5BB-4DB3-BDFD-BA83F8DF346F by James Halls, on Flickr And that's where it's at right now. I've actually just done the blue so just the yellow to go and then on with the camo. Thanks for looking. Questions and comments welcome as always. Ozzy
Using paint masks will definitely add a nice touch to your build, no need to worry about slivering and various varnish coats. I use a cocktail stick when I use paint masks to lift them off.

I use a cocktail stick when I use paint masks to lift them off. I'll try the cocktail stick next time instead of the metal tweezers I normally use. I have scratched a few clear parts of paint work in the past peeling off the masks 😕
franky boy
Hello chaps Paintings almost done. The undersides were painted with Sovereign Hobbies azure blue, the uppers with Gunze Aqueous mid stone and dark earth. The markings were painted on with a Montex set prior to the main camo. 6097FE2F-0568-4D48-89D2-8B89756F6040 by James Halls, on Flickr C18B4691-A68E-4699-91CA-80F1750E4E96 by James Halls, on Flickr C829C968-6E5A-46DD-9A86-960E93753905 by James Halls, on Flickr I just need to paint the red gun patches on the leading edges, the black anti slip patches on the wing roots and then some touch ups and it’s onto weathering. Thanks for looking. James

Stefan Buysse
Very nice! I recently built my first Hurricane and the type has seriously grown on me. Yours is a much better model. Great result with the paint masks. I can imagine a couple of things going wrong if I tried those. Cheers, Stefan.
Grey Beema
Great work on your Hurricane, really nice job. Looking forward to you next instalment. I am after the same kit for conversion to an Operation Torch Sea Hurricane IIb. They are quite elusive. They are quite consuming but the results in my opinion are far better than decals. 2 hours ago, Grey Beema said: Great work on your Hurricane, really nice job. Looking forward to you next instalment. alt-92
With all that's going on, I wouldn't be surprised if it has delayed things, and they only started looking at it this summer.
