1/6 Battle Droid with STAP

Recommended Posts

I like the jury-rigged clamp support, and it looks like it's worked really well. I think you've nailed the pose; definately looks like he's counterbalancing the lean on the bike.

I’d love a b1 battle droid kit (1:12 scale) but they are going for silly money now.

I wouldn't mind one too, especially after watching Hunter's build. I'm wondering if Round 2 will reissue this kit now they've got the SW licence. Probably still be expensive even if they do. Their kits aren't exactly cheap at the best of times.

really enjoying the build though - wonderful

Thanks Chief! Yeah there are so many star wars kits I missed out on that are now crazy prices, hopefully it wont be too long before the 3d print stuff gets so good we can easily just buy cheap files and print our own!

Okay time for a little update on this guy, I've been sanding down the seam lines using some perfect plastic putty, never used it before and I'm really happy with it; very easy to sand and goes on nice.

So the body is ready to be primed but I need to get the neck (which currently moves back and forth) fixed in position, so I got him back on the clamp and used a bit of white tack to hold it in place. The head isn't glued on its just there to make sure the neck position is how I want it.

Then I moved on to getting the arms locked down and glued so I can get it all primed at once, the left arm was straight forward, just had to glue check position and glue it.

Right arm was a little more tricky as it needs to rotate at the elbow to hold the handlebar properly, so I snapped it off and drilled some holes for a piece of wire to hold it in place once in position.

Had to use flash in that last pic, my solar light decided to stop working

So its all drying so next step will be spraying down the primer, which makes it feel a lot closer to being finished which feels good, as I want to try and get this done asap so I can move on to the Tau sculpture and get the torso sorted.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Update time! Have been working on this guy, got all the bits prepped and ready for paint by drilling some holes here and there to get some toothpick supports in place to hold while spraying, then laid down the primer.

Then I mixed up a sandy colour for the base colour of the droid, I was losing the light and my damn light still isn't working so this was done in the near dark!

I really didn't like how this colour went down, I think I thinned it a bit too much and it just seemed a bit weak, also I noticed in the daylight that a couple of seams on the side of his body needed more sanding, so I treated this as an undercoat and after a little more sanding mixed a big batch of a much better colour that went down a lot nicer.

Very pleased thats done, next steps will be chipping pigment work and some washes here and there. Hoping to get this finished very soon, I'm having surgery next week (nothing super serious just having my gallbladder out) so I have three days of isolation before which are going to be "get-this-done" days!

So yeah next up I'll add some chipping and brush paint some of the details slightly different shades of the base colour.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Been there, done that. You may find that things are a little sore and may not be too active.

Nice paint & body work. I'll look forward to more when you're up and about.

Right time for another update, been able to get quite a lot done in the last few days which is good.

First I started the chipping process using a fine sponge and my new favoutire enamel colour, 251; which is a really dark brown. Wanted to go a bit heavy with this, like he's a verteran droid but as always dont want to go crazy and over do it.

Started with the backpack to get a feel for it and then went from there.

When I did the arms I also painted the piston rod on the arm using valejo liquid silver, which is an alcohol based VERY metallic silver. I've never used it before, I got it for the mandalorian 3d print I just finished just in case I needed to touch up any of the metallics or just use it outright on the smaller details; but as it turned out I didn't need it. I'd heard it described as alclad for a brush which isn't far off, it actually to me feels like the original humbrol 11 silver before they changed it (i dont know how or why)

Once all the chipping was done I got out the pigment powders, and using my go to all time favourite (mig graveyard dirt) I added grime and shadow. In a couple of places I used old rust which is obviously more red, but only in a couple of places, wanted a tiny bit of variance but its crazy easy to over do it when you use the lighter rusty colours.  Oh and on a side note the solar light is working again, yay!!

When I did the head I also used some of the same 251 dark brown chipping colour thinned down for the eyes. Thought it would be better than going for a stark black.

And then I couldn't resist getting the head, back pack and side bits glued on so he's finally starting to come together.

Very very happy with how he's looking! And he's very close to being finished, only thing I have to do is pigment work on the arms, and I can get his arms glued on and get him in position on the STAP.  Only other major descision I've made is to scrap the original base, rather than stress myself trying to find some way of weighting down one side so it doesn't lean and topple over. So I'm just going to cut a circle of thick wood and spray it black K.I.S.S. :D

FInish line is in sight!!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

I use to be really happy with my Battle Droid,  however I've beginning to think it now looks a bit amateurish 😂, yours on the other hand looks fantastic,  I really like the subtle weathering - Andy

Really appreciate the compliment, I'm sure yours looks good Andy, and with any model as long your happy with it yourself that's the main thing anyway :)

This is looking amazing HR.  I really need to learn and practice a good chipping technique, I have a few Star Wars kits in the stash and you can't build em clean.  Can't wait to see this finished, might inspire me to start mine :)

Thanks Hoolio! Yeah i think chipping is just a matter if finding the technique that suits you, I find the hairspray method and masking fluid method a bit too slow with undercoats and such plus not a great amount of control imo

I just have a stash of fine sponge which I rip off in random bits and hold with tweezers, and dip it in my colour (enamels work best they flatten really well) get off most of the paint with blotting then just dab here and there on edges and where I think makes se sense trying desperately not to go crazy with it!

It's a quick and easy method that gives instant results which is why I like it

Time for what will probably be the final update on this guy!

I got the droid glued into place by his feet, and got the right arm in place as well.  In order to do that I had to support his weight and the easiest way was to fix a bit of wire to the roof of the shed and loop it round his backpack.

And the I got the left arm in place

51580787058_c3a67b89b5_c.jpgIMG_20211012_115222717_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Next I got a circle of wood cut that will be my base

51579741297_2ebae8bae0_c.jpgIMG_20211003_190407533 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

This will get sprayed black, and I'm going to drill the hole for it right to the side so it will be leaning over the base itself which will make sure it has enough support and wont tip over.

So hopefully the next time you see this it will be done!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)
