I was lucky to find this actually as I had initially found a 1/20 flaptter on t'internet from abroad but that was a total no show so with the refund I managed to snap up this kit for south of £20 which I was really pumped about and THEN totally out of the blue the flaptter turned up!!! So that freebie kit will be the build after this one Kit arrived sealed in the box, opened it up and the droid and STAP are in seperate bags, I'know its 1/6 but the size still amazes me, love a big kit! Some of the bits are a bit bowed, push one end together and the other wants to open up! I've heard that these guys are a swine to get on the STAP in a decent pose due mainly due to the fixed ankles, so at some point I'll probably break them and repin the joint at an angle that will allow a more realistic/dynamic pose. I think rather than having the STAP posed bolt upright on the stand I'd like to have it at a slight angle with the droid leaning slightly kind of like a motorcyclist going into a corner. Yeah your Mr Bones build was pretty awesome 😎 So far the most challenging thing has been how a lot of the vent like details that go across joins just do not line up at all, but hey ho these things are sent to test us! I'd got as far as glueing and sanding the main parts... leaving them separate where possible to help painting. And you've made me realise first thing I'm going to have to do at the bench is take his head off as I'm going to probably have to tilt his neck and strengthen it, plus ease of painting. Clamping one end pops the other so clamp both but then the middle wants to open up too! Couldn't do that with the arm as the pin that goes through the part that should move doesn't have a corresponding hole it just rests against the flat bit of the opposite bit. So with the bowing for now I'm going to have to live with it like this, which isn't too bad as once the pose is sorted I'll just glue and clamp it, which I can do before or after painting as it shouldn't affect it. KR's IanJ Thanks for the tip Ian, for my pose I'll have to cut his feet off at the ankles anyway, so then gluing them on to the pedals will ensure I get his feet level too 👍 So I'm on to getting the STAP together now, and my word it has some god awful sprue connection. The wing that the droid stands on is connected with this wide monster! Didn't even attempt the nippers on that, I sawed through it carefully with a razor saw then cleaned it up with a scalpel and some sanding. I've been tidying up seam lines and getting it all together, got the stap body together but before that I couldn't resist a dry fit to check the size IMG_20200917_184013 by Nick Frost, on Flickr BIG is definitely the key word for this build! So got it glued and as usual with this had to clamp the hell out of it IMG_20200924_165356 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Technically according to the kit instructions you should put the support part parts in before gluing, but I'm planning on cutting off the pegs and inserting it after for ease of painting. So for now I've been sanding this all to within an inch of its life and started spraying some primer. IMG_20201008_185838 by Nick Frost, on Flickr To be fair as I've had to clamp it all so much, the filling has been shockingly minimal on this build so far, I do need to put a bit on the stap front seam though, however not as much as I thought. IMG_20201008_190657 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So next up I'll sand that down and respray the primer, I have got a lot of the droid sanded down, but think for now I want to concentrate on getting the stap parts primed so I can mentally check that off and get it all at the same ready for paint stage. Then I'll switch back to the droid and get it all primed so its all ready for paint at the same time. Oh and in case anyone's interested the new solar light works a treat and I'm well happy! I am still working on this, I know its been a while since the last update, I had a couple of blokes on my drive cut the catalytic converter off my car and then got mucked about by a car dealer trying to sort a new car, so its been a very stressful few weeks! Toftdale Posted November 9, 2020 Share Posted November 9, 2020 Hi Nick, I'm predominantly a car modeller but occasionally dabble in the darkside. I tried to build this kit a couple of years ago, but gave up trying to get the droid to stand on the STAP. I have just had a look at your Flickr account (very impressive, absolutely love the Turbine Combat Racer) so I am sure this will be just a good as the rest of your collection. The main issue I came across was the amount I had to splay the droids legs apart would mean you would need to position his feet ar 45 degree angles to make them stand on the foot controls. So I thought I would be clever and move the footrests in towards the centre,that did not work either. I'll be watching this with interest.
