1/6 Battle Droid with STAP

Recommended Posts

Time for another build, and I'm excited about this one as its a kit I've wanted for a while.

I was lucky to find this actually as I had initially found a 1/20 flaptter on t'internet from abroad but that was a total no show so with the refund I managed to snap up this kit for south of £20 which I was really pumped about and THEN totally out of the blue the flaptter turned up!!! So that freebie kit will be the build after this one :D

Kit arrived sealed in the box, opened it up and the droid and STAP are in seperate bags, I'know its 1/6 but the size still amazes me, love a big kit!

Then I got it all on the bench, and I'm starting with the droid so made a start cutting bits and smoothing nubs and gluing.

Some of the bits are a sod to get together, so it was out with the clamps. Some of the bits are a bit bowed, push one end together and the other wants to open up!

Because I know there will be a lot of tidying up because of the fit I decided to just throw the torso together so I'm just dealing with one larger piece

So torso is together with head on, I'll get the legs and arms together next before I start sanding and filling the whole lot where needed. I've heard that these guys are a swine to get on the STAP in a decent pose due mainly due to the fixed ankles, so at some point I'll probably break them and repin the joint at an angle that will allow a more realistic/dynamic pose.

I think rather than having the STAP posed bolt upright on the stand I'd like to have it at a slight angle with the droid leaning slightly kind of like a motorcyclist going into a corner.

But yeah for now, next up I'll get his limbs sorted.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Scale 1/6 that has to look huge built. In the box with respect to the chair it already looks large.

I think a very nice model is going to come out of here. I hope to see progress.

Andrés S.

Thanks Andrés! Appreciate the interest, yeah its going to be a big one :)

Looks like a good buy for below £20 and from my favourite sci fi franchise! Will keep an eye on the post for progress!

Thanks Stephen, yeah I love star wars which is crackers really as this is the first star wars kit I've made since I was a kid when it was brush painting a toy rather than making a model!

I'll look in from time to time too. I have one of these in the stash.

It's been for sale for some time, but no one seemed interested!

Cheers Pete! Man I always forget about the selling section on here, and I'm amazed it wasn't snapped up!

I would love to do one of these. But in a more manageable size like 1/24 or so.

This one will need a cabinet on its own!

If bandai would release a 1/24 platoon set of battle droids now that would be sweet! But I've always had a thing for big kits, and yeah I think I'm definitely going to have to adjust some shelves in my cabinet and keep my fingers crossed when its done!

Must be something in the air... I dug my copy of this kit down out of the loft yesterday. I'd got as far as glueing and sanding the main parts... leaving them separate where possible to help painting.

It is a big kit... not keen on the plastic though.

I was thinking, yeah, not that big and then saw the head against the cutting mat squares. Cool stuff, I like the sound of the pose.

Cheers Will, think I'm going to have to do quite a bit of pinning and strengthening to pull it off!

Yeah I know what you mean the plastic is very thick! And you've made me realise first thing I'm going to have to do at the bench is take his head off as I'm going to probably have to tilt his neck and strengthen it, plus ease of painting.

Got a bit carried away!

I'll follow along as I also have this kit in the stash, its size being the reason I haven't started it yet as I've nowhere to put it.  Looks like you've made good progress so far.

Thanks Hoolio, yeah it's going to be a fair size when he's on board! I'm now wondering if it will actually fit in my cabinet at all

I bought some spring clapmps a few weeks ago and man I'm glad I did as I really need them for this guy!

Clamping one end pops the other so clamp both but then the middle wants to open up too! So clamps ahoy with his thighs

50330558277_086ee23855_c.jpgIMG_20200910_190139 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then after they had dried when I put the lower legs on them they were the same so I had to clamp them all up too

50330383991_7a525f9084_c.jpgIMG_20200911_090309 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And they are now together and awaiting seam cleanup

50330383866_415424858d_c.jpgIMG_20200911_115700 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I sanded the mold lines on the forearms and got the thumbs glued on

50330557837_a7341741a8_c.jpgIMG_20200911_150639 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then it was time to get the clamps out and sort the upper arms

50330557707_ca6a126487_c.jpgIMG_20200911_150647 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

With the legs where the connector piece fits in I had to use super glue to get the moving joint together. Couldn't do that with the arm as the pin that goes through the part that should move doesn't have a corresponding hole it just rests against the flat bit of the opposite bit.

So with the bowing for now I'm going to have to live with it like this, which isn't too bad as once the pose is sorted I'll just glue and clamp it, which I can do before or after painting as it shouldn't affect it.

50329709913_aa329bba62_c.jpgIMG_20200911_150655 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So all the droid bits are together and awaiting cleanup with filler and a good sanding.

50329710698_6e07127fdd_c.jpgIMG_20200911_150840 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And just so you can see exactly how big he is I popped his head anda leg on

50330383426_1b52c7d888_c.jpgIMG_20200911_150945 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So next up I'll start cleanup and then I think i'll get the STAP together so I can get it all primed together and get the droids pose sorted before painting it all.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Quick heads up - If you're planning on building this with the Droid on the STAP , you may want to glue the pedals to the feet, then glue the pedals to the STAP.

The feet will not line up with the pedals otherwise - At least they haven't on mine where I built the two parts separately.

Thanks for the tip Ian, for my pose I'll have to cut his feet off at the ankles anyway, so then gluing them on to the pedals will ensure I get his feet level too 👍

So I'm on to getting the STAP together now, and my word it has some god awful sprue connection. The wing that the droid stands on is connected with this wide monster!

Didn't even attempt the nippers on that, I sawed through it carefully with a razor saw then cleaned it up with a scalpel and some sanding.

50337662302_b360e6d17d_c.jpgIMG_20200911_183254 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then it was out with the clamps again (par for the course so far) to get the panels glued onto it

50337505131_1204f342f4_c.jpgIMG_20200911_184527 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then tidied up the pedals and got them together

50336816658_67a9c5d146_c.jpgIMG_20200911_191745 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

The handle bars were a particular swine, they come in two halves and the only way I got them together was by removing the location pin I circled and then again clamping the hell out of it.

50337661427_a12529404e_c.jpgIMG_20200913_134234 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Started on the engine intake bits next, got the little fins glued on and tidied up the inner bit which will be left out for now for ease of painting.

50340791786_c5fe7c3288_c.jpgIMG_20200913_141711 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

After that I got the gun halves together, and a total miracle, a part that went together fine with no clamps!!!!

50337504221_a61979b7ef_c.jpgIMG_20200913_143441 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Buuut then the other one did! :(

50336815828_afee1b1b74_c.jpgIMG_20200913_143446 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I got the two bits together that support the top section together, then realised one clips onto the other so took it apart and got it in place (its great when you read the instructions!)

50340104573_03fd243f3d_c.jpgIMG_20200913_185821 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

50340104473_ff19964cc7_c.jpgIMG_20200913_185830 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

50340791461_8747d22c40_c.jpgIMG_20200913_190003 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And the last bits I snipped and tidied are the main strut parts that support the top, these will be left apart again for ease of painting.

50340104483_1ce5848b1d_c.jpgIMG_20200913_190047 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So all the bits are off and together where needed so next up I'll start sanding and filling seams on all the bits ready for priming

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

  • 4 weeks later...

Right time for an update, sorry its been so long, now its getting darker I've been mucking about sorting a light for the shed which has held me up!

I've been tidying up seam lines and getting it all together, got the stap body together but before that I couldn't resist a dry fit to check the size

50441294856_2f6df63fbe_c.jpgIMG_20200917_184013 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

BIG is definitely the key word for this build!

So got it glued and as usual with this had to clamp the hell out of it

50441294841_7a19b7803a_c.jpgIMG_20200924_165356 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Technically according to the kit instructions you should put the support part parts in before gluing, but I'm planning on cutting off the pegs and inserting it after for ease of painting.

So for now I've been sanding this all to within an inch of its life and started spraying some primer.

50441476122_561a09db46_c.jpgIMG_20201008_185838 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

To be fair as I've had to clamp it all so much, the filling has been shockingly minimal on this build so far, I do need to put a bit on the stap front seam though, however not as much as I thought.

50441476077_561a09db46_c.jpgIMG_20201008_190657 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So next up I'll sand that down and respray the primer, I have got a lot of the droid sanded down, but think for now I want to concentrate on getting the stap parts primed so I can mentally check that off and get it all at the same ready for paint stage. Then I'll switch back to the droid and get it all primed so its all ready for paint at the same time.

Oh and in case anyone's interested the new solar light works a treat and I'm well happy!

50440604153_58928d59f8_c.jpgIMG_20201007_190505 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So much easier than working in the pitch black (especially with the "well organised" mess)

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

I am still working on this, I know its been a while since the last update, I had a couple of blokes on my drive cut the catalytic converter off my car and then got mucked about by a car dealer trying to sort a new car, so its been a very stressful few weeks! Back at the bench very soon now its all sorted and I am back in the land of the living from the stressful swamps of car thieves :D

Words fail me. Scum, just utter scum. Why can't they just keep their hands to themselves? They've clearly got skills, why not use them legitimately?

Glad to see you've kept your chin up, mate. Dltbgyd...

Thanks Will. Yeah definitely! But it's all good I've ended up getting a great deal on a better car so I'm feeling really good now, finally back in a modelling frame of mind!

And in actually fact I've done a load of spraying on the stap this evening so there'll be an actual update coming soon :)

Hi Nick,  I'm predominantly a car modeller but occasionally dabble in the darkside.  I tried to build this kit a couple of years ago, but gave up trying to get the droid to stand on the STAP.  I have just had a look at your Flickr account (very impressive, absolutely love the Turbine Combat Racer) so I am sure this will be just a good as the rest of your collection.  The main issue I came across was the amount I had to splay the droids legs apart would mean you would need to position his feet ar 45 degree angles to make them stand on the foot controls.  So I thought I would be clever and move the footrests in towards the centre, that did not work either.  I'll be watching this with interest.   In the end I scraped the STAP and now the droid stand centery of my desk.
