The paintwork looks great and I think with a little more fading and weathering you've have nailed it Werner.

No access.

My IDS kits are in the loft at home...

...and after returning from sea the loft is not my first port if call!

But I’ll see.

I have really enjoyed this F.3 and feel I’ve cracked the Revell Kit.

an update is long overdue here...

tried to install the Aires nozzles and Revell thrust reverser buckets.... yeah, you guess it... not a stright fit, I needed to remove the outer Revell actuator parts... and dropped the whole thing in the process... :wall:

some minor damage on the fin I have to report though that needed a rebuild... :phew:

the sharp eyed one will also notice that I finally mounted the refueling probe.. advice: do that earlier! (see red circle above...)

cheers,

Werner

Isn't the fin tip painted dark grey as well? That could help with the repair...

yeah, that will definitely help!

plastic surgery, and the opposite of a nose job, no? ;)

it is pointy again! I do hope it does not need any further durability testing!

some updates on the wing stores:

and the mediocre fitting thrust reverser buckets... especially from behind... maybe I will take them off again.... :(

  • 2 weeks later...

some decalling done yesterday

did not foresee it that complicated to source adequate Norm83 decals....

so no I have a mix, (they also mixed them on the real jets .... and there are still green ones around, at least until very recently.. so prove me wrong  😜)

so it is kit decals (Revell could really have provided declas for at least one service machine... :( ) + Italeri decals (Cartograf printed as well )

wGdJjyT.jpg

observe the diffenent appearance on the camo in the setup....

cheers, Werner

  • exdraken changed the title to Tornado IDS Luftwaffe Revell 1/48 -decals

HaHen decals cover most German Tornados,..

https://www.hahen.com/epages/64625185.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/64625185/Products/48047

Now I know these are for the grey schemes but I can't see the difference in the Norm 83 squadron shields or codes.  The fin shield for JaBoG 32 is silver on my set at home, their MarineFleiger schemes are nice too and you can get the walkways.

The biggest downside is the carrier film is not pre cut, so you have to do that which is a pain for stencils and the carrier film was thick on one set I had.

thanks, for sure yxou can cobble something together with the new Norm76 scheme decals as well

but what exactly ? quite a lot of research necessary, not really helped by the fact that the green scheme is in use for many may years and stencils, suadron shields etc changed a lot.

in earlier times they were rather colorful, now they are grey....

a photo I took 20 years ago:

I think the time is ripe for a dedicated Norm 83 sheet, at best over time!

I 100% agree!

I love that picture, and for me Norm '83 is exactly what comes to mind when I think Tornado.

I think the biggest pity with Revell's 1/48 kit is that they did not offer the decal options from the original Tornado IDS/GR.1 boxing, 3 really good and colourful options which I plan to build using aftermarket.

Were JaBog32 always ECR?  Was the ECR around in 1985 or were they IDS then converted to the ECR when it came out?

I only ask as I wish to model the aircraft on that old Revell Box Top (44+43) and that is JaBog32, but that picture is very early as it has Norm 76 pylons and tanks still.  So IDS yes?

I am all but a specialist on the Tornado, let a lone the German one!

I guess with googel translate you will figure out details, but no, it had IDS in the beginning:

https://jabog32.de/yaja/chronik.html

in 1984 they turned Tornado:
