Des
Had the pattern of recent years been followed last weekend would have seen a fly-in at the former RAF Montrose in Angus however the continuing consequences of the Corona Virus outbreak meant that there was no event this year. Since 2013 (although not in 2015) there has been a weekend fly-in arranged over the August Bank Holiday Weekend to coincide with end of summer season events at the adjacent Montrose Airfield Museum where despite the actual grass landing area having long been turned over to other uses an area of playing fields on the former site is temporarily fenced off to act as an airstrip for the weekend. Activity during the event is obviously weather dependent which some years has meant nothing happening on one or other of the two days but good weather such as last year was typical with over seventy different aircraft over the two days with around fifty visiting on Saturday and thirty on Sunday. The temporary runway and parking areas are simply enclosed within waist-high temporary fencing allowing access around the entire perimeter and there is more than ample car parking along the concrete perimeter track which runs along one side of the former airfield. And perhaps most importantly for me at least is that it is less than five minutes away from my own kitchen for fresh cups of tea and toilet for the inevitable consequences of the same and age. Should it resume in 2021 it is a highly recommended enjoyable and relaxing free day out for watching a mix of modern , preserved , homebuilds , warbirds and other light aircraft with no hassle , some examples from previous years follow. 2013 de Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth , G-ADJJ 2013 de Havilland DH.87B Hornet Moth , G-ADNE 2013 de Havilland DH.85 Leopard Moth , G-AIYS 2013 Auster J/1U Workmaster , G-APMH 2013 Piper PA-23 Apache , G-APFV 2014 Piper L-18C Super Cub , G-KAMP (ex-Luftwaffe) 2014 Mooney M20J N60GZ 2016 S.E.5a , G-BKER (7/8th. scale Replica) 2016 Piper PA-18 Super Cub , G-BWOR 2016 CASA 1.131 Jungmann , G-CGTX , (ex- Ejército del Aire) 2016 de Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth , G-BWVT 2017 Grob G 115D , G-BVHE 2017 Pitts S-2A Special , G-BYIP 2017 SOCATA Rallye 150SV Garnement , G-KHRE 2017 Maule M-4-180V Astro-Rocket , N159AR 2017 Cessna L-19E Bird Dog , G-VDOG (ex-ALAT) 2018 Piper J-3C Cub , G-BWEZ 2018 Jodel D.120 Paris-Nice , G-BCGM 2018 CASA 1.131 Jungmann , G-CGTX , (ex- Ejército del Aire) 2018 Alpi Pioneer 300 , G-RABS 2018 Stinson 108 Flying Station Wagon , G-WAGN 2019 Fournier RF-3 Avion-Planeur , G-ATBP 2019 Piper L-18C Super Cub , G-BIID 2019 Slingsby T.31M Motor Cadet Mk.III , G-BRVJ 2019 Cessna L-19E Bird Dog , G-VDOG (ex-ALAT) 2019 Replica S.E.5a , G-BKER (7/8th. scale) 2019 Scottish Aviation Bulldog 130 , G-BHZR (ex-Botswana Air Force) 7
Latinbear
Great photos! That looks like a first class day out. Very Shuttleworth-esque. I did laugh at your reasons for enjoying the proximity of the airfield. 🤣
