Four Aces - Hurricane pilots meet at the Flying Club

Recommended Posts

Okay, lets begin.

I am building the Sweet 144th scale Hurricane metal wings which comes with schemes for five BoB aces. I'll be making the planes of Flt Off Clowes, Flt Lt Brothers, Plt Off Stevens and Sqd Ldr Tuck. Unfortunately Flt Lt Gleed based out of Exeter didn't make the cut.

Once built, I will be making a diorama base inspired by the classic Flying Club scene from the Battle of Britain film, with a selection of figures and vehicles to go with them.

The kits, dating from 2002, have an unusual production technique. To save on moulding costs, the sprues are duplicated with one of each being cast in clear styrene. This does seem a bit weird when first putting together but it will disappear under primer soon.

Just started this afternoon, interior green painted inside the very basic cockpits and fuselages combined.

Sunday work. Made up the planes and decided, for 'fun', to open the gun panel on one to have it being rearmed, so spent most of the afternoon scratchbuilding a gunbay interior.

Hi,

Scratch building gun bays in 1/144 scale - your eyes and hands must be in a lot better condition than mine - I am impressed!

Cheers

Thanks for the nice comments

I've primed up the two clear models to equalise the colours and while waiting for these to be ready, added a Czech Sptifire to the lineup 😏

Decals done and a little weathering on the walkways. Varnished tonight, so on with the canopy framing, props and wheels next and aerial wires I guess - did all Hurricanes have these?

Cockpit canopies added and painted, props on (one even rotates!) and 7 wheels are on. Antenna cables added and just need trimming.

Should be ready for the scenery to start soon.

This Hurricane looks a bit different to the others though...

Actually managed to get away for a week of climbing in the Lakes, so got this weekend to wrap up the project.

Made up the base before I went away.

Sorry Tim, no pics?

Hmm my host is online and I can see the pics on my mobile Firefox but not Chrome. Anyone else seeing or not seeing the pics?

I have just discovered your builds Tim, lovely work in this scale. A bit late for you now but I thought that you might like this photograph of a RAF Tilly that I took at the Yorkshire Air Museum last month.

What a fantastic little diorama (or is it a vignette?).  Either way, congratulations on a  :goodjob:
