VC-10 K2 decals

Hello all.

I have the Airfix VC10 K2 kit, but it has no markings supplied. I have been looking through t'interweb thingy, and found these at the Big H:

https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/RAMM14401

Can anyone tell me if they are suitable as they do not specify the K2 version, but do suggest they were designed for the Airfix kit. If they are not for a K2, what modifications would I need to make for the alternatives  (Vickers VC10C/VC-1C.MK.1K RAF Special Schemes)? I am not too concerned if I do not have 100% accuracy, as long as I am in the rough ball-park.

Many thanks for any help given,

The main thing would be to modify the wings. The Airfix K2 kit is based on the prototype and does not include the big inboard wing fence, has the full chord outboard wing fences and lacks the inboard wing chord extension. If you can find one, there used to be a Bra-Z conversion kit B4KRV1 to modify the wing leading edges to C1K (or Super VC10) spec. If you can't find that, see here for some images and explanation: https://www.vc10.net/Technical/wing_shapes.html  You're looking for the type 1106 wings (as opposed to the type 1101 wings on your model).

The Airfix kit also has two small flaws: the forward underfloor freight door should only be on the righthand side and the nosegear door configuration is incorrect.

The other thing would be to remove the hose drum unit from the bottom of the rear fuselage, as the C1K doesn't have that. The other differences are such that you won't notice them I guess.

Ray, the basic markings would be fine for the K2, but you couldn’t use the special tail decals as they were all applied to the C1K. Converting the K2 to C1 or C1K all as described by Archer.

please to see the Braz bits are available again. May have to invest in some to convert my K2 into a 3 or 4.

By the way, if you can find a decent (secondhand) copy of 'Post War Jets - vol. 3' (see here: https://amzn.to/3jQDxmj), it includes a set of detailed drawings of the VC10 C1(K). I'm willing to put my copy under a scanner but due to the binding, may not be able to provide a complete scan. Just let me know.

@Ray S

I have a copy of that book which you're welcome to borrow.  Quite when we will see each other to effect a handover is quite another matter so using the modern miracle of the scanner may be quicker for you.  I don't have one.

Thanks both, for the offers, I am just toying with the idea at the moment, the markings and the LEX's add up to quite a bit and I have to justify that extra cost at the moment. I will get back to you both soon via PM.

All the best, and thanks for the offers.

Just to say I have started this project now and will be using some of the suggestions given.

@Archer_VC10 has pm'd me some plans from his book, and I will try to get reasonably close to getting something VC-10 like. I also got the Ram Models markings so need to chose which of the four lovely grey machines to do. The 1000 years of Oxfordshire is looking to be the favourite at the moment. I am toying with doing a WIP for it, as that may prompt me to do it better than on my todd. I will be giving the leading edge modifications a miss (sorry!), as Hannants are out of stock.

Thanks to all for the advice and offers,

Ray

Hi

The other thing to modify are the engines and stub wings if you are going to model it as a C1K. The C1 had the engines and stub wings from the Super VC10 which are wider and set at a slightly different angle to the Standard VC10 which is what the RAF C1 is based on. The kit is also missing the APU exhaust at the rear of the fuselage which was only fitted to RAF VC10s.

Regards

         John
