Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.N - Tank No.04 Tunisia 1942 - Tamiya 1/48

Recommended Posts

Hi @wimbledon99, @modelling minion and @Ozzy. Hope you are all keeping well and thank you for your comments.

A bit more progress has been made. First a few photos of it against a white background - pretty much as it was in the last set of photos except for a bit more weathering - mostly dust effects - created by stippling on very, very, very thinned, lightened, Desert Yellow. Oh - and the aerial from stretched sprue.

Then I decided I wanted to add some stowage. I felt I ought to add the sort of framework on the back that they used to use sometimes to hold the jerry cans. A rootle through the plastic selection found me some squared U section styrene strip and some angled strip. Some of the crews obviously included some timber planking to provide additional support so I found a bit of flat, thickish styrene sheet, which I cut to size and then scaped a micro-saw blade over both sides to create a sort of wood grain effect. Everything was bit overscale really but I think it looks okay under it's painting and weathering:

Finally I assembled some Tamiya 1/48 Jerry Cans, some general stowage items and a crate, plus cleaned up some Red Dog resin stowarge items and got it all painted and secured in place:

The rope was some thickish thread that I soaked in very thinned Dark Earth which was also mixed with a bit of PVA glue to stop it fraying.

Next I'm going to do a figure (or maybe a couple) and then a base. Hopefully it shouldn't be too long now until I am finished.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Kind regards,

Stix

Aye up Stix.

Another fantastic model. The weathering and dusty finish are spot on and not over done. Really liking the stowage and the bucket! Look forward to seeing a figure or two along with the base.

Regards,

Steve

Thats looking Great Stix, Im hoping to do this or a Stug III in the build. Not that it’ll be as good as this my armor builds just aren't up to snuff.

Just follow Styx's steps. I tried to emulate just a few basic fundamentals that he has shared with us, and while my stuff isn't on par with his, I'm beginning to understand how his technique works, and have been getting positive results with it.

It won't look great at first, but you'll learn something anyway.

The final bit I did on these over the weekend was to fit and glue the link & length tracks:

Having painted the tracks on the sprue do you clean off the mating faces before applying cement? Or do you find they stick OK painted.

(I have yet to try link and length tracks...................... I have a Revell Tiger II I've been putting off for months.)

Well you might not think that you have done much but what you have done is absolutely fantastic.

The weathering is spot on and the various items of stowage are great and are placed in a very realistic manner. I really like the bucket hanging down at the rear, a very nice touch. 👍

Hi all and thank you very much for all your kind comments and support. This is what I think makes Britmodeller such a great place to be part of!! I must again apologise for taking so long to reply and thank everyone. It was a combination of lack of time generally and wanting to build something in @Corsairfoxfouruncle's excellent Panther STGB.

I have now done a little vignette scene but it was a bit of a rush job over this last weekend.

First I cut out a small piece of 4mm MDF with a coping saw and sanded down all the edges. As I wanted to make it look like the tank was setting into the crusty surface I marked out and cut the sides of the track marks with a craft knife. I then chiselled these out flat:

Testing it in place:

Household filler applied:

More checking:

50820538773_5236bd3516_b.jpg

Two coats of thinned Humbrol Desert Yellow. Allowed to dry. Very, very, thinned wash of Revell's Gunship Grey applied all over and allowed to thoroughly dry. Finally everything was dry-brushed with a lightened version of Desert Yellow:

Army Painter grass tufts applied and then even more checking!:

Finally I added the figures I have made up and painted plus the radio gear:

So that's it! Finished! The RFI photos can be found HERE and the Gallery photos can be found HERE when I have posted them.

Thank you again to everyone who was kind enough to take the time to comment, advise and offer support in this thread and to Patrice @TEMPESTMK5 for his excellent GB.

Can't wait for the next MTO GB.

One final photo taken against a desert photo backdrop:

Stix,

I know this is an older thread, but have to say the result of your painting and craftsmanship is outstanding - in any scale.

Cheers,
