1/48 Tamiya Douglas Skyraider + wing fold set

Recommended Posts

Good Afternoon.

My lastest completed model.  The kit goes together very well (typical Tamiya).  Decided to try and save display space by getting the Aires wingfold Photo etch Set.  This meant I started the building by cutting the wings in half (this could have meant that the start of the build was also the end, but luckily it worked out well)

I added a resin seat which was very nice and a resin canopy mechanism cover from Quickboost which can be seen through the sliding canopy.

I was worried about the decals as they were quite old and I have not had much luck with Tamiya decals in the past.  They went down a treat and I was very pleased with the result.

I made a mistake putting the wrong aircraft codes on  the top wing.  By the point I realised, I couldnt remove the decal without damaging the paint finish.  Figured as it was folded, it might not be too obvious.

My favourite skyraider colour scheme.

Really like the wing fold. The Skyraider does look good in that configuration. The cockpit is really nice. Overall, a great build!

You can't go wrong with a VA-176 'Stingers' Spad! The cockpit and extra detailing under the canopy really added character. Don't beat yourself up too much over the wrong codes on the wing, as I have seen numerous photos  of Navy aircraft  with the wrong codes or modex; I've even seen a PV2 Harpoon where the codes under one wing were painted on backwards. I'd chalk it up to your  paint crew being hung over after a liberty at Cubi Point!

Me, too - I want to do the same thing with mine.

Thanks guys. The wingfold photo etch is airwaves not aires.

I am blaming tamiya instructions for the wing code mistake. The top view is on the last page of the instruction book with the side decal plans on a separate piece of paper with the top view of another aircraft scheme below the side view

Great job - love a nice "Spad"!

Restrained but effective, sympathetic weathering - good to see!

Pleased to see that the Airwaves etch set worked well (I have the same set ready to go) - you really had me searching the internet for the Aires set! 😁

I would pass-off the wing code thing as a new outer wing panel from a "hanger queen"

Must look into that QB stuff you have used.

Nice job - like it! 👍
