Good morning

Waouh !! these guys know how to push you to buy their products ...fortunately for our wallet not all manufacturers have the same commercial policy can you just imagine Airfix or Revell or Tamiya doing the same thing with all the kits in their catalog ?  ...

Oh noes, just above the limit where Norwegian toll kicks in (almost doubling the price) :(

Is that for just the expert kit? Or is that with the extra sprues? What happens when you receive a gift? ;)

I'm very much looking forward to the release of the Mk.IIb.

The 302 Sqn markings, WX+B/Z3675, a Block 5 (5th Hawker-produced block) aircraft, for the RAF Churchstanton-based machine were of particular interest as that station is within ten miles of my home town and I've been passed the site on numerous occasions.

However, Wikipedia (which I realise is not infallible!), and also other sites notably one relating to the history of RAF Churchstanton, seem as I understand them to suggest that these markings may not be correct.

I'd be happy to be proved wrong as much as I'd be interested to know what fellow BMers think, and what Arma's research discovered!

Kind regards,

Mark

in what way not correct?

Arma Hobby, to state the obvious, are modellers and Polish.    I'd trust their research,  it's worth checking their blog for information, and  you could always email them if you can't find an answer.

Many thanks, @Troy Smith and @Bigos for your replies.

Apologies if my first post was a bit ambiguous - my excuse is that it was late and perhaps I should have left it until later today!

I'm not questioning the markings of the aircraft per se, rather it's being at RAF Churchstanton, which is my interest as its local to my home town.

Unfortunately, I have a prior engagement this morning with a kitchen ceiling and a can of white emulsion :( so please think of this as a holding reply, and I'll reply properly later on.

Thanks again and kind regards,

Mark

Hi again,

so, having successfully dealt with the white emulsion, I've done a bit more digging and may I say that if I could have managed to get my foot into my mouth, I would have done so! I do know that Wikipedia can be a useful reference, but can also be far from infallible, and this would seem to be the case here.

The Wiki page for 302 Squadron makes no mention at all of their being stationed at RAF Churchstanton, while the Wiki page for the airfield itself mentions that the Squadron was indeed there briefly in 1941, but flying Hurricane Mk.Is.

However, there is a very interesting page on the South West Airfields Heritage Trust website here that makes better mention of 302 Squadron being stationed at RAF Churstanton in 1941, and includes some details of their activities. There is a lot of interesting info on the station itself, its construction and its subsequent use. The page also includes a link to some wonderful photographs of 302 personnel. However it does refer to 302 being equipped with Hurricane Mk.IIAs.

The most useful site I've found so far is this one, which gives a detailed history of 302 Squadron, including details of squadron personnel and where the squadron was stationed during throughout its existence. There's lots of information there, and interestingly, it states that in April 1941, while based at RAF Kenley, the squadron was re-equipped with Hurricanes Mk.IIA and MK.IIB, and then re-located to Jurby in Isle of Man in late May for rest. On August 7th 1941, 302 Squadron again re-located, this time to RAF Churchstanton to become part of the 2nd Polish Fighter Wing flying escorts and convoy patrols, and stayed there until October 7th when they moved once again to Harrowbeer in Cornwall.

So there's the answer, and as @Troy Smith rightly said above, Arma Hobby are both modellers and Polish, and they do their research. I hereby apologise for casting doubt in their direction and would eat my hat if I had one. If nothing else, this has taught me a few things:

  1. Treat Wikipedia entries with even more scepticism than hitherto;
  2. Check and check again for more sources that corroborate each other;
  3. Say nothing until you're sure of your facts; and
  4. There's no fool like an old fool!

Enjoy those Hurricanes, and have a great weekend, folks!

Cheers,

Mark :)

I just got in the new canopies along with another kit. They are thinner than the Hurricane MK I and there earlier MKIIC. I have not tried them on yet.

Since they are reasonable priced kits to began with the extra price is not to bad. Well worth it I think.

I took a photo but my camera is not as good as it use to be with close up photo's so I didn't post it since one can't tell the difference . Dropped it to many times and rather buy kits than a new camera.

I've also ordered some of the new canopy mouldings along with my pre-order of the Mk.IIB/C kits, to go with my part-built kits I've already got!

Looking forward to getting on with them :)

Thank you Victor, Troy and Bigos for discussion on our forthcoming Hurricane IIb/c. I would not have an answer to all questions, but our researcher most probably would. In case of any doubt about kit please drop a comment on our blog, so I would be aware something need an answer.

@Wojtek Bulhak

As you've just posted a link to the hurricane instructions blog, how come I can never get  any of the instructions to download from your shop pages? Each kit has a Print and a Download button, every time I've tried (going back to your first Hurricane kit release) all I ever get is an error message "TCPDF ERROR: Can't open image file: http://whiteface.soteshop.pl/uploads/images/applogo.png"  Same result for Print and Download, and same result in Firefox and Edge.

Hi Wojtek,

Many thanks for your post.

I'm afraid it was me that cast a shade of doubt by trusting the information that is posted on Wikipedia about 302 Squadron PAF, which is lacking in a considerable amount of detail, for which I can only apologise profusely.

Further research on my part has proved what I wanted to know (and had initially doubted) that 302 Sqn were indeed based at RAF Churchstanton in 1941 while equipped with Mk.IIAs and Mk.IIBs.

So I'm really looking forward to receiving my kits in due course!

Kind regards,

Mark

At the time when the 302 Squadron was stationed in Churchstanton, there was not a single Mk.IIa in the unit. In July they got eighteen new Mk.IIb.

Even better! The 302 Sqn history site I mentioned in post #58 only mentions their re-equipping with Mk.IIAs and Mk.IIBs in April 1941 while stationed at Kenley.

In regards to the instructions for the new Arma Hobby Hurricane IIb/IIc, I have added the PDF for the instructions to the Arma kit here: https://www.scalemates.com/kits/arma-hobby-70042-hurricane-mk-iib-c--1305325

Scroll down to the green tab just below the product timeline.

Interesting take on Kuttelwascher’s later all black scheme, ala 247 Squadron style! I prefer the earlier version like the only known photo of the entire aircraft from IWM, posted here many times. The search continues.....

Happy trails,

                     Jeffrey :)

Those are some very neat choices. And I had decided I didn’t need more Hurricanes!

Yeah I know, 13 Arma Hurricanes later and still counting! I did post a question on Arma News, about #2. BE581 with the smaller fuselage roundels and fin flash. I have not seen it portrayed as such before, so I am both anxious and curious as to the response. I will post here when I find out.

Yest, it seems to be an IT malfunction. When you are modeller, sometimes website service is your glass ceiling. Hopefuly we can correct is shortly.

Hi Wojtek, thanks for your reply, I know hat you mean re IT, it's a double edged sword. The download would be nice, but isn't the end of he world if it doesn't work - I'd rather you got on and sorted out some Sea Hurricanes for us 😉 !
