I must be mad. 1/48 scratch built Taube

Enjoying the two live Taube builds in the forum I’ve always loved the Taube so I’ve decided to put my money where my mouth is song make a Taube of my own. Kits are hard to come by and expensive so nothing else for it a scratch build. The wings are a little different but most of the structures in the plane are fairly straight forward. However it will require s level of model engineering to get it to work and no guarantees that this will make the finish line any day soon or at all :)

Top panels cut out and brass rod attached for the two spars. .5mm plastic rod glued to the leading edge. Next I’ll lay in the ribs and attach the lower panels, going well so far.

Interested to know if you will leave a gap between the fuselage and the wings like @Moaor like the instructions in my flashback glue them flush?

I’m planning on leaving the gap, since I have the two 1mm brass spars I have the structure to do this. If I can find my Taube book I can check which is correct.

Made a start in the fuselage. Although it’s basically a truncated vee in profile the surface is a compound profile, so I’m going to use bulkheads and formers and then a strip frame in the cockpit area. I’ll mold the upper surface of the engine nacelle but I may get away with using thin sheet for the turtle deck.

Just seen this. This is an ambitious project but I think perfectly feasable. The wings will be the biggest problem but you seem to have made an excellent start on those.

I will certainly be following with interest - however long it takes!

A little bit more on the fuselage, glued the formers and added the floor, all going wonderfully to plan so far. When I get the lower sides on I’ll cut out the keel sections where the cockpits are and add in stringers from rod.

You will need a fairly strong structure to supprt the wings of course. The undercarriage assembly should be interesting when you get to that stage.

The wings should be pretty light but strong. I’m going to ca brass tubing into the fuselage which I can then insert the wing brass rods into I’ll probably solder together the undercarriage and lower supports from brass ( I have a nice new soldering iron waiting to be tested) and then ca the  assembly to the plastic bits, should give me a light but strong assembly.

Fabricated the tail. I’ve put a brass rod through it for structure.

Dryfitting the wings and tail. I’ve set a piece of 2mm brass tube into the guselagr to accept the wings, also added the rear kingpost and the v structure under the fuselage from flattened 2mm copper tube.

As luck would have it I found an old moulding in the scrap box that could be cut down to fit the Taube ( the foredeck from a gloster gamecock )

50319787271_de85844779_c.jpg

Dry fitting if the foredeck accompanied by the removal of the forward formers to allow space for the twin cockpits and the engine.

Ive also managed to finish the ribs and glue on the lower wing skins, just need to trim the brass soars to length and were a long way down the road. I’m the really enjoying the build  but it’s forcing me to be on  my A game :)

Wait until you come to the rigging - then your game will need to be A+!

My cunning plan is to just copy @Moas build :) although I may attempt to solder some brass for the structural members under the wings.

To think I contemplated scratch-building one of these after I had successfully built an AD Sparrow 'Scout' from scratch. I am glad inertia prevailed!

You are doing a grand job on this most beautiful of aircraft,

Its you that set the minimum insanity level for BM entry Mike. We just filled in the application forms.
