canberra kid
Hi All I'm wanting to build a Mk.XVI high back as flown by my dad post war with 11 AGS from RAF Jurby and Andreas. I have my eye on the Revell 1/48 Mk.V/Mk.XVI kit. The question is, can I build a clipped wing Mk.XVI from this kit? Thanks. John
gingerbob
Do you mean "IX/XVI" kit? It would be either ICM or Hasegawa plastic. If this one: https://www.scalemates.com/kits/revell-04554-supermarine-spitfire-mkixc-xvi--103969 then Hasegawa. The answer appears to be "nearly". It doesn't look like they give you 'e' type cannon-bay covers, though you can find/adapt parts to get around that. Not the most accurate- Eduard would be the way to go for that. Also, not sure if your example would have the wheel bumps (and probably, with that, 3-spoke wheels).

I guess given the role and time frame all the guns were removed? John
Alex Gordon
G'day John,I built one in the Spitfire/Seafire GB here. As Gingerbob says the E wing cannon cover panels are not included but the bulges over the wheel wells are.I think that 3 spoke hubs are included too but I didn't pay a lot of attention to that bit.

Tail-Dragon
This could be an option, if you can find one ... Eduard's Spitfire Mk IXe (clipped wing). I think it could have everything you might need for non bulged wheel well ... https://www.eduard.com/Eduard/Plastic-kits/Profipack/Aircraft/1-48/Spitfire-Mk-IXe-1-48.html https://www.eduard.com/out/media/8283.pdf (Eduard's Spitfire sprue D is a non bulged "E" wing, sprue K is for a bulged wheel well "E" wing) It looks like the only way to get a Bulged "E" wing is with the XVIe Bubbletop kit... https://www.eduard.com/aircraft-and-helicopters/1-48/spitfire-mk-xvi-bubbletop-1-48.html?cur=2 https://www.eduard.com/out/media/84141.pdf on the bright side, you can swap the sprue K with the sprue D in the kits, and have a bulged, clipped "E" wing highback, and a "wartime" non-bulged Mk XVIe bubbletop. Tail-Dragon
I didn't realize that the Profipack had 2 sets of wings - bonus! It looks like the Eduard's kits have only the 4 and 5 spoked wheels. I believe that 3 spoked wheels can be had in the Airfix kits (PR XIX and FR XIV)
Ivor Ramsden
We only have a couple of photos of one Mk XVI of 11 AGS in the Manx Aviation & Military Museum collection. They show 4-spoke wheels but the guns, or lack of, aren't visible. We do know that the Mk VIIs which were used prior to the MK XVIs didn't have guns, although short gun tube remained in situ.
