dogsbody
Author Carl Vincent has sent me some photos of Hampdens, from 32 OTU. They were used for torpedo dropping training. The first six: Chris 10

Graham Boak
At least some of those are not torpedo bombers as there is no step up aft of the bombbay to a reduced-depth ventral gun position. No reason why every flight at the OTU has to involve an actual carriage and drop, of course. On the first photo, note how the blue in the upper wing roundel has faded more than the red (compare with the fin flashes). This quite common but not always seen so clearly on b&w photos.

brewerjerry
Hi A few bits of info i have on the aircraft in the photos P5424 swung to port landing gear collapsed , repaired and crashed again on 10 nov 43 & written off AJ988 flew into sea and exploded after engine failed 25 oct 1942 P5421 ? u/c collapsed on landing pat bay 28 nov 1941 In the other thread the photo hampden dropping the torpedo, coded TB-HEB I wonder if the two first letters were used at one time to indicate a torpedo bomber aircraft I only have serials for 10 TB hampdens, I also wonder if some local conversions were done , ( that pioneer spirit ? ) As P5436 listed as a hampden B.1 ditched after a torpedo drop 15 nov 1942 Cheers Jerry Edited August 18, 2020 by brewerjerry
