Bughunter
Sopwith Triplane "Black Maria", Eduard 1/48 My fifth model of 2020 is a important piece of aviation history: the Sopwith Triplane as flown by Raymond Collishaw in the Black Flight. It is in scale 1/48 and based on the Eduard kit. Some kit parts are replaced by wood and metal e.g. airscrew, tail skid and cockpit parts. Beside the kit PE I used PE from the company Parts, the Clerget engine from Small Stuff, the seat belts are made by HGW and the terminals for the RAF wire rigging is from Gaspatch. The paints are from Mr.Paint, especially the nice PC12 needs to be mentioned, Alclad, Gunze and oil paints for the weathering. I really like the final look of the model ... And I tried a little experiment My be you know that picture of Collishaws Triplane: Source: wikimedia.org My imitation: And again in color: Thanks for watching! ColinChipmunkfan
Very ell done. The propeller and struts look very good as does the rigging and the accentuation of the ribs on the underside. AS you can tell I think you have done a great job on this.

72modeler
Wow- that is one beautiful model! The finish on the prop and struts is incredibly realistic, as is the finish on the undersides of the flying surfaces. You have every right to be proud of this one! As the others have stated, the PC12 looks spot-on! 👍 Mike

Bughunter
Wow, what a overwhelming feedback I think I should show some of the mentioned details too The real wood struts: Soldered control stick The result of some work: two Vickers front parts. Gaspatch Vickers are also nice, but I like here the real openings with light going through. The airscrew is prepared. IP and milled struts: Clerget from Small Stuff: The scratched seat: alu, wood, milliput cushion and HGW seat belts. NO wicker seat! A pump, created from brass and nickel silver. And painted: The tail skid was made from wood and I scratched and soldered some brass parts. All parts are tinned. The skid is completed. The friction piece (0.6mm brass is soldered on a 0.1mm holder) is fixed with 0.2mm nickel silver bolts. The skid can slewing in the hinge bearing. And for steering it can move in the axle. So all of my new parts are plugged together to create a nice Triplane tail. Scratched pulleys in the wings, closed with clear foil and PE frame. Raised ribs created with masking and primer. Landing gear with metal and wood: There are more and many things are shown on the final model. Cheers, Frank 4
Gorby
As usual, a tiny work of art. Fabulous! The black and white photo looks more real than the real. I'd love to see a few photos of your full collection Frank - that's one art gallery that would be exceptional.
Duncan B
That is a stunning looking model and it was obvious before you added the photos of the extras that you had put a lot of work into it. Those scratch built additions are works of art in their own right. Duncan B

72modeler
OK, now you're just showing off! I could never, never do that kind of detailing in my preferred scale, but I sure as heck can appreciate what you have done in yours! I am soooo depressed now! Even your display case is a thing of beauty! Thanks for the photo Frank – I can die happy now that I've seen heaven. P.S. I can't see your F-35?

The display case is wall mounted 1.20x1.00m in my corridor, 6 layers for models, but only 21cm deep. That is nice, yes - but on the other hand the reason why I cannot build WNW models. They are just to big. More depth was not possible because of a fold-out stair. I made my own dazzle-free LED lightning from the front, so the models are flooded in light from below and above. So I do not built bases, because that would only block the light. So all the details are presented to the viewer And yes, the F-35 is missing because the picture is not fresh. All the actual models like Benz Motorwagen, Sopwith Schneider, Dolphin and Triplane are not shown. And more to come The next ones will be a Morane-Saulnier type I in russian service (converted from type N kit) and - if I can repair the masking damage to the lozenge decals - a Albatros Triplane. That is a crazy project in terms of effort. Cheers, Frank
