Kelly's Heroes Tiger Tanks

the filming of kellys heros is quite interesting, the shermans are post ww2 m4a3 with the 76mm gun fitted to the normal 75mm turret, used by yugoslavia where the film was shot.

most of the half tracks are m5's with flat mudguards and rounded rears and the tigers are indeed based on the t34 tank.

you can get the m4a3 & tiger in 1/56th:-

Imperial War Museum has one of those 'Tigers' in their Land Warfare Hall at Duxford in rather garish colours.  Real ones being somewhat hard to come by........

While maybe a bit naff, they were better than M47s painted grey, as in many earlier films.  Many of the 'Abrams' you see in films are Centurion-based facsimiles, real Abrams again being hard to come by. I saw a Finnish film about the Continuation War which had good-looking KV and ISU replicas on T-54/55 hulls. In Saints and Soldiers Battle of the Tanks are some very nice Pz IIIs built on M113 chassis, apparently even with the engine moved to the back.

Warlord games do a 1/56 wargaming miniature version of the Kelly's Hero's Tiger:

They also do Oddballs Sherman:

Which, while it was a real Sherman, had a number of modifications both for post-war service and for the movie.

I wonder what happened to the Kelly's Heroes Tigers.

3 were built for that film.  They have popped up in other films since then, like SPR.  1 is certainly now at IWM, don't know about the other 2.  Retired maybe?  Languishing in some film prop rental lot?  Fury took the big step of using Bovington's Tiger.

Last I knew, one of the Kelly's Heros tanks is owned by a small garage / filling station in the US Mid-West where it is used as a children's play thing. Some of the panels have come off and you can see the framework used for them to alter the shape

The 3 KH Tigers appeared in other films but did not actually take part in those films, Their appearance are extra film shot during the making of KH.

Allegedly both Clint Eastwood and Donald Sutherland, who financed the building of them, enjoyed driving the tanks so much a lot of extra film was shot, most of which went into the film company's stock shot library.

You see the use of this library a lot. When you see a 747 taking off in an 'airport' scene, its the same one all the time. Its a library film shot.

Reading this thread back I realise that Sandsmodels had already posted this information. I really should pay more attention.
